Download or read book Rolando Hinojosa written by Klaus Zilles and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive interpretation of the work of a major figure in Chicano literature, Klaus Zilles's study of the fourteen novels in Rolando Hinojosa's Klail City Death Trip series will appeal equally to the specialist, to the student, and to the interested reader of Hinojosa's intriguing and innovative "Tejano" novels. The series is dedicated to revealing the suppressed oral history of Mexican Texas and to making the reader a companion on a quest for this elusive history. Published between 1973 and 1998, the Klail City series ranges in historical time from the mid-1700s to the end of the twentieth century, attesting to 250 years of Spanish-Mexican presence in the Lower Río Grande Valley of Texas. The main body of Hinojosa's series, however, is set in fictitious Belken County, located on the U.S./Mexico border, and charts the lives of Hinojosa's two protagonists, Rafe Buenrostro and his cousin, Jehú Malacara, two men raised in the rigidly segregated world of a South Texas farming community. The Klail City series constitutes a truly "novel" approach to the novel: each installment in the cycle differs from the one before it in genre (the adult Buenrostro becomes a police detective and appears in several mystery novels), in narrative style (one novel is written entirely in verse, while another takes epistolary form), or in language (Hinojosa writes in Spanish, in English, in Chicano idiom, and in mixtures of all three). Zilles accomplishment is to provide a critical guide to the complicated fictional world that Hinojosa creates. By showing the profusion of forms and styles Hinojosa deploys, Zilles reveals the true dimensions of Hinojosa's design. "What makes Zilles so refreshing is his style. . . . He writes in a language accessible to the average reader. His work is solid, informative, thoughtful, and useful. I recommend it highly."--Juan Bruce-Novoa, Harvard University
Book Synopsis BEING WITH BECKY by : Lisa Binkowski
Download or read book BEING WITH BECKY written by Lisa Binkowski and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one said a word as we struggled to walk in the blustery cold to the spot where we would gather one more time to be with her. We all stared ahead to the area resting under the large cruci-fix, where we would say goodbye to her for the last time. I looked at the small, square hole in the frozen ground and started trembling. This would be her final resting place. Choking back tears and gasping to catch my breath, I wondered how a young woman so full of life and goodness could be ripped away from us in such a cruel and horrific manner. How could this have happened? How would we survive? No answers came to me. The only truth was that Becky was dead, and our lives would be forever changed. BEING WITH BECKY is based on the true life-sharing experiences of two sisters from Northwest Ohio. The author weaves tales of their times together from early family gatherings to ski trips with friends, revealing the close bond they treasured deeply. When Becky is tragically killed, the author must wrestle with the emotional chaos that sets in and cripples her spirit. In a world that no longer makes any sense, she desperately tries to pick up the pieces of her life and vows to honor the sister who once called her, my hero.

Book excerpt: Klail City is the pivotal novel in HinjosaÍs continuing saga, the Klail City Death Trip Series. It is concerned with power as articulated through the disjunctive class and race relations between Texas Mexicans and Texas Anglos in the lower Rio Grande Valley. In his desire to help recreate the kaleidoscopic past, Hinojosa employs four generations of storytellers who thoroughly mesmerize the reader with their tales of tragic realism, alienation and desire. Klail City (in its Spanish version) is the winner of Latin AmericaÍs most prestigious literary award, the Casa de las Am?ricas Prize. It has been published in German and now, HinojosaÍs own English-language version is available. Rolando Hinojosa is the best known and most prolific Mexican American novelist. His works, which form a continuing, ever-evolving saga of life in the small border towns in TexasÍs lower Valley, are acclaimed for their fine sense of wit and pathos and their ability to capture the nuances of oral language.

Book Synopsis Awful Beautiful Life by : Becky Powell
Download or read book Awful Beautiful Life written by Becky Powell and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping story of grace, faith, and triumph for a woman whose world shattered hours after her husband's suicide. Becky Powell faced the unthinkable on May 16, 2013. Her husband Mark called and said, "I've done something terrible." Within hours, she learned that he had taken his own life and, over a period of several years, millions of dollars from friends and colleagues. Everything she believed to be true, the very fiber of her marriage, was called into question. Within a week, rather than planning carpool runs and volunteer fundraisers, she owed almost one hundred creditors millions of dollars and had her own team of ten lawyers. She was also the subject of open FBI, SEC and DOJ investigations--and faced potential criminal charges. And, although she instantly denounced every cent of Mark's $15M in life insurance and promised to repay every penny taken, her lawyers knew that in reality she faced years of court battles and lawsuits, and possible jail time. Yet from that first horrific moment, God was there. He showed up in His Word, in Becky's friends, in her lawyers and in the generosity of those around her. He worked miracles. CNBC, the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and others covered the first moment, but what about the last? What about the story in which God gives your next breath because you can't find it on your own? What about the story of a mom and three kids trying to make sense of their pasts, present and future while living under a microscope? Awful Beautiful Life is Becky's journey through the two years surrounding Mark's death and how she overcame. It came down to a loving God who surrounded her, a present and dedicated family, and friends, who made her life, offered her sanctuary and showed up for her and her kids in tangible ways. This is a story of remarkable grit, strength, and what the Body of Christ in action looks like.

Book excerpt: The infamous rise in characterizations of white women as Becky(s) is a modern phenomenon, different from past characterizations like the Miss Anne types. But just who embodies the Becky? Why is it important to understand, especially with regards to anti-racism and racial justice? Understanding that learning, moreover even discussing, dynamics of race and gender are oftentimes met with discomfort and emotional resistance, this creative, yet theoretical book merges social science analyses with literary short stories as a way to more effectively teach about the impact of whiteness and gender. Additionally, the book includes guiding questions so that readers can critically reflect on the behaviors of Becky(s) and how they impact the hope for racial harmony. Designed specifically for both educational spaces and the larger society, the author, an educational researcher and former classroom teacher, approaches the topic of race and gender, specifically whiteness and white women, in a nuanced manner. By borrowing from traditions found in critical race theory and teacher education, this book offers both counterstories and anecdotes that can help people better understand the dynamics behind race and gender.
