He was the Immortal, who had chased down time for his one last chance to reunite with his kindred spirit, with his forever love, Eve Campbell. Max Macgregor, a child of the mist, fought hard and battled his way to the twenty-first century to reconnect with Eve. But he would have to complete what would be his last mission. Tasked this time to finally rid the world of one created only to do evil, Max had made this deal to fight a very long time ago—one more fight, for one more year with his true love. Devastated by the loss of her husband three years prior, Eve desperately wanted to love and believe again. But their time together came with a heavy price. With Max having made the only deal he could, time and an old world obligation became their enemy. Beckoned by the Mist is a journey through love, filled with rekindled romance, sensual connection, and a supernatural tension, as our two heroes work to complete and meet their ultimate destiny.

Book excerpt: This book would have been completed earlier but for events that disrupted millions of lives across India, including those of journalists: the demolition of the Babri Masjid at Ayodhya, by a Hindu mob on 6 December 1992 and the communal riots that followed across the country. In January 1993, the selective massacres of Muslims at Bombay and the devastating revenge bomb blasts there two months later led to extensive travelling and reporting for the New York Times. In addition, there was 'normal reporting': the Punjab, environmental, economic and political issues such as the billion dollar scam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hugo and Nebula Award–winning series of swords and sorcery, featuring two unorthodox heroes, from a Grand Master of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Many decades before George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones, Grand Master Fritz Leiber ruled the sword-and-sorcery universe. These three short story collections chronicle the unconventional adventures of Leiber’s endearing antiheroes: barbarian Fafhrd and former wizard’s apprentice, the Gray Mouser. Swords and Deviltry: Fafhrd, a handsome barbarian of the Steppes, is seduced by a beautiful prostitute and her equally intoxicating city, while the Gray Mouser, a slum rat wizard-in-training, is tempted by the dark arts. The two men meet on a night of multiple thieveries and an enduring partnership is born. Swords Against Death: Rogue swordsmen and devoted companions Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser pursue ill-gotten fortunes within the confines of Lankhmar. They cross paths with two wizards, Sheelba of the Eyeless Face and Ningauble of the Seven Eyes, and a most violent clash ensues. Eventually, following further adventures, the two antiheroes end up as indentured swordsman servants to their former foes. Swords in the Mist: A cloud of concentrated hatred and lean times in Lankhmar compels Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser to temporarily depart the most corrupt metropolis in all of Nehwon as they seek adventure in the realm of the Sea-King—and on a different world entirely. This must-read collection of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser short stories features multiple Hugo and Nebula Award–nominated tales, and includes the acclaimed novella Ill Met in Lankhmar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thayer Soule couldn't believe his orders. As a junior officer with no military training or indoctrination and less than ten weeks of active duty behind him, he had been assigned to be photographic officer for the First Marine Division. The Corps had never had a photographic division before, much less a field photographic unit. But Soule accepted the challenge, created the unit from scratch, established policies for photography, and led his men into combat. Soule and his unit produced films and photos of training, combat action pictures, and later, terrain studies and photographs for intelligence purposes. Though he had never heard of a photo-litho set, he was in charge of using it for map production, which would prove vital to the division. Shooting the Pacific War is based on Soule's detailed wartime journals. Soule was in the unique position to interact with men at all levels of the military, and he provides intriguing closeups of generals, admirals, sergeants, and privates -everyone he met and worked with along the way. Though he witnessed the horror of war firsthand, he also writes of the vitality and intense comradeship that he and his fellow Marines experienced. Soule recounts the heat of battle as well as the intense training before and rebuilding after each campaign. He saw New Zealand in the desperate days of 1942. His division was rebuilt in Australia following Guadalcanal. After a stint back in Quantico training more combat photographers, he went to Guam and then to the crucible of Iwo Jima. At war's end he was serving as Photographic Officer, Fleet Marine Force Pacific, at Pearl Harbor.

Book excerpt: Destined to go blind, a rake sets his sights on the toast of society, lighting a fire of passion that scorches the night, in this captivating novel from USA Today bestselling author Bronwen Evans. Stephen Hornsby, the Marquess of Clevedon, has one goal: to see every exquisite thing he can before he goes blind. His greatest joy, watching a woman shuddering in the throes of passion, will be gone. But before the darkness descends, he is determined to seduce a magnificent widow, Lady Penelope Fisherton. Unfortunately, his rakish reputation has preceded him; Lady Penelope spurns his advances. Being a man who relishes a challenge, however, her reluctance adds only luster to his desire for the last beautiful sight he’ll ever see. Considered the belle of London society, Lady Penelope was married to a scoundrel who cared for no one but himself. Now that she’s free, she wants nothing to do with love, passion, or desire—emotions that abandoned her with a cruel husband. So why does her body react when Stephen smiles? As much as she’d like to avoid the rogue, her brother-in-law wants her fortune, and he’ll kill to get it. Stephen is willing to help, but he’ll take only one thing in return: Her. In his bed. Such a movement, based in the fabled Alpine Redoubt, was in fact a real threat, ultimately neutralized by Germany’s flagging resources and squabbling officials. But had SS Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, the notorious Man with the Iron Heart, not been assassinated in 1942, fate might have taken a different turn. In this imagined world, Nazi forces launch a guerrilla war, using the quick and dirty tactics of terrorism to overturn what seemed to be a decisive victory. Suddenly the Allies–especially the United States–are mired in a long, seemingly unwinnable conflict while battling an invisible, unrelenting enemy.

Book excerpt: In the middle of the strangest storm in history an airliner crashes into the ocean and only three young people survive - a brother and his two sisters. But they are not together, and the ocean is not on Earth. Alex, Amanda, and Tori Lancaster have entered Boreth, a world of ancient devastation and deep evil. Through this world they must travel with every choice taking them closer either to endless night or overwhelming glory. But this journey is not for them alone ... it’s for all those who are lost and can’t find their way home. What readers say: “Your book irrevocably shaped my understanding of the power of literature. The allegory, the imagery both vicious and blindly beautiful, the way you depicted trauma and betrayal and forgiveness and the deep, abiding capital-L Love - I have carried that with me as the standard to which I have held all other works of fantasy/speculative fiction. It’s still the most profound work of fiction I’ve ever read.” "In this novel, Coleman Luck accomplishes one of the most difficult tasks a writer can undertake -- to create a completely fresh, new and very believable world. The book is an excellent read -- imaginative and fast paced and full of wondrous, subtle connections with the finest developments in Christian thought. So good it seems like it came from Lewis, Tolkien or one of the other great masters. A must!" “I've NEVER read any book of any kind that took me on such an emotional and spiritual journey. At times I couldn't put it down, other times I HAD to, just to catch my breath. There were times that I felt MY faith was being put to the test. Other times I began to worry about the author's faith. But at the end of the day, I've never read a more beautiful story of redemption, love and faith. And I can't wait for Mountaincry!” (A previous version of Wind Sunday was published under the title Angel Fall.)
