Book Synopsis Beauty Ideals, Appearances, and Body Images in Disney’s Feature Films by : Lisa Buchegger
Download or read book Beauty Ideals, Appearances, and Body Images in Disney’s Feature Films written by Lisa Buchegger and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disney films reflect the current values and beliefs of society and have the power to influence their audiences in the perception of what is beautiful, and whether appearance does or does not matter. This book gives an overview of beauty ideals, body images, and appearances in Disney’s feature films. Seven main films are chosen for this analysis to allow for a comparison across time: Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (1937), Cinderella (1950), The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), and Frozen (2013). The survey determines to what extent Disney films make use of the beauty-goodness stereotype – the equation of appearance and personality. The characters are analyzed as to which bodily features they exhibit, and how these features are in tune with dominant beauty discourses during the times the films were made. Furthermore, the narratives are examined to find out how they topics ‘beauty’ and ‘appearance’ are rendered within them, demonstrating that earlier films frequently rely on traditional and stereotypical depictions and notions of beauty, whereas more recent productions represent more ambiguity and diversity.

Book Synopsis Colliding Worlds: How Cutting-Edge Science Is Redefining Contemporary Art by : Arthur I. Miller
Download or read book Colliding Worlds: How Cutting-Edge Science Is Redefining Contemporary Art written by Arthur I. Miller and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2014-06-16 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dazzling look at the artists working on the frontiers of science. In recent decades, an exciting new art movement has emerged in which artists utilize and illuminate the latest advances in science. Some of their provocative creations—a live rabbit implanted with the fluorescent gene of a jellyfish, a gigantic glass-and-chrome sculpture of the Big Bang (pictured on the cover)—can be seen in traditional art museums and magazines, while others are being made by leading designers at Pixar, Google’s Creative Lab, and the MIT Media Lab. In Colliding Worlds, Arthur I. Miller takes readers on a wild journey to explore this new frontier. Miller, the author of Einstein, Picasso and other celebrated books on science and creativity, traces the movement from its seeds a century ago—when Einstein’s theory of relativity helped shape the thinking of the Cubists—to its flowering today. Through interviews with innovative thinkers and artists across disciplines, Miller shows with verve and clarity how discoveries in biotechnology, cosmology, quantum physics, and beyond are animating the work of designers like Neri Oxman, musicians like David Toop, and the artists-in-residence at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. From NanoArt to Big Data, Miller reveals the extraordinary possibilities when art and science collide.
Book Synopsis Deleuze and Art by : Anne Sauvagnargues
Download or read book Deleuze and Art written by Anne Sauvagnargues and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Deleuze and Art Anne Sauvagnargues, one of the world's most renowned Deleuze scholars, offers a unique insight into the constitutive role played by art in the formation of Deleuze's thought. By reproducing Deleuze's social and intellectual references, Sauvagnargues is able to construct a precise map of the totality of Deleuze's work, pinpointing where key Deleuzian concepts first emerge and eventually disappear. This innovative methodology, which Sauvagnargues calls "periodization", provides a systematic historiography of Deleuze's philosophy that remains faithful to his affirmation of the principle of exteriority. By analyzing the external relations between Deleuze's self-proclaimed three philosophical periods, Sauvagnargues gives the reader an inside look into the conceptual and artistic landscape that surrounded Deleuze and the creation of his philosophy. With extreme clarity and precision, Sauvagnargues provides an important glimpse into Deleuze's philosophy by reconstructing the social and intellectual contexts that contributed to the trajectory of his thought. This book is the product of insightful and careful research, which has not been made available to English readers of Deleuze before now.
Book Synopsis The Ethics of Aesthetics in Japanese Cinema and Literature by : Nina Cornyetz
Download or read book The Ethics of Aesthetics in Japanese Cinema and Literature written by Nina Cornyetz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-11-22 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an innovative, scholarly and original study of the ethics of modern Japanese aesthetics from the 1930s, through the Second World War and into the post-war period. Nina Cornyetz embarks on new and unprecedented readings of some of the most significant literary and film texts of the Japanese canon, for instance works by Kawabata Yasunari, Mishima Yukio, Abe Kôbô and Shinoda Masahiro, all renowned for their texts' aesthetic and philosophic brilliance. Cornyetz uniquely opens up the field in a fresh and controversial way by showing how these authors and filmmakers' concepts of beauty and relation to others were, in fact, deeply impacted by political and social factors. Probing questions are asked such as: How did Japanese fascism and imperialism ideologically, politically and aesthetically impact on these literary/cinematic giants? How did the emperor as the 'nodal point' for Japanese national identity affect their ethics? What were the repercussions of the virtual collapse of the Marxist movement in the 1960s? What are the similarities and differences between pre-war, wartime and post-war ideals of beauty and those of fascist aesthetics in general? This ground-breaking work is truly interdisciplinary and will appeal to students and scholars of Japanese literature, film, gender, culture, history and even psychoanalytic theory.
