Download or read book Cy Twombly's Things written by Kate Nesin and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cy Twombly (1928-2011) is widely acknowledged as one of the postwar period's most influential American artists, yet his sculptures are little known. From 1946 onward, he made hundreds of rarely exhibited found-object assemblages, often painted or plastered over with diverse coatings of white. Across decades, Twombly thus developed a singular, strikingly consistent body of work, despite the shifting status of sculpture during his lifetime. In this revelatory monograph, Kate Nesin first establishes, then evaluates the artist's long engagement with the historical and contemporary limits of sculpture, both as medium and as word. While others have described Twombly's three-dimensional works as timeless, transcendent, and poetic, Nesin complicates our sense of their so-called poetry, focusing on the prosaic, conspicuously material operations of these sculptural "things," and emphasizing the inherent difficulties as well as possibilities of the language used to characterize them. Through close readings of individual works and in-depth analyses of certain guiding concerns, such as surface, naming, gaps, and repetitions, she illuminates Twombly's remarkable sculptural practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grosvenor School of Modern Art was founded by the influential teacher, painter and wood-engraver, Iain McNab, in 1925. Situated in London's Pimlico district the school played a key role in the story of modern British printmaking between the wars. The Grosvenor School artists received critical acclaim in their time that continued until the late 1930s under the influence of Claude Flight who pioneered a revolutionary method of making the simple linocut to dynamic and colourful effect. Cyril Power, a lecturer in architecture at the school, and Sybil Andrews, the School Secretary, were two of Flight's star students. Whilst incorporating the avant-garde values of Cubism, Futurism and Vorticism, the Grosvenor School printmakers brought their own unique interpretation of the contemporary world to the medium of linocut in images that are strikingly familiar to this day and are included in the print collections of the world's major museums, including the British Museum, the MoMA New York and the Australian National Gallery. This new book which accompanies an exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery illustrates over 120 linocuts, drawings and posters by Grosvenor School artists and its thematic layout focuses on the key components which made up their dynamic and rhythmic visual imagery. For the first time, three Australian printmakers, Dorrit Black, Ethel Spowers and Eveline Syme - who played a major part in the Grosvenor School story - are included in a major museum exhibition outside of Australia.

Book Synopsis Rembrandt's Light by : Jennifer Scott
Download or read book Rembrandt's Light written by Jennifer Scott and published by Philip Wilson Publishers. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rembrandt's Light brings together paintings, etchings and drawings that focus on Rembrandt's mastery of visual storytelling through light, concentrating on the period from 1639-58, when he lived in his 'dream house' on the Breestraat in the heart of Amsterdam (today the Rembrandt House Museum). The rooms on the first floor of the house, with their large windows and exceptional quality of light, offered new possibilities for the creation of art. Arranged thematically the book traces Rembrandt's innovation: from evoking a meditative mood, to lighting people, to creating impact and drama. Highlights include 'The Denial of St Peter', 'Pilgrims at Emmaus' and three of the artist's most famous images of women: 'A Woman Bathing in a Stream', 'A Woman in Bed' and 'Girl at a Window'. Published to coincide with an exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery, and the celebrations taking place throughout Europe to mark 350 years since the artist's death (1669), Rembrandt's Light aims to refresh the way we look at works by this incomparable Dutch Master.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Built poetry: the 2019 Dulwich Pavilion designed by London-based architects Dingle Price and Alex Gore in collaboration with British artist Yinka Ilori. The Dulwich Picture Gallery in the south of London was the world's first purpose-built public art gallery. Founded in 1811, when Sir Francis Bourgeois RA bequeathed his collection of old masters "for the inspection of the public," it opened its famous building designed by John Soane in 1817. To mark the museum's bicentenary in 2017, Dulwich Picture Gallery commissioned the first temporary summer pavilion on its grounds. For the second edition of the Dulwich Pavilion in 2019, the commission was awarded to London-based architects Dingle Price and Alex Gore in collaboration with British artist Yinka Ilori. This elegant large-format book documents this piece of built poetry in a series of striking atmospheric photographs by Sophie Roycroft. Concise essays by Job Floris and Sumayya Vally situate the project within its social, political, and cultural context and are complemented by technical details and selected plans and drawings on and inside the book's cover.

Download or read book McMichael Canadian Art Collection written by Ian A. C. Dejardin and published by Rizzoli International Publications. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory opportunity, for Canadians and non-Canadians alike, to engage with the essence of Canada as portrayed in the luminous works of its artists The McMichael Canadian Art Collection has a unique mandate to celebrate the art of Canada, which it does within a great building in beautiful grounds overlooking the Humber River Valley. Originally a home completed in 1954 for entrepreneur Robert McMichael and his wife Signe, the building became an unofficial gallery when they began allowing passers-by and school parties inside to view their art collection. In 1965 they took the visionary step of donating their home, collection and land to the Province of Ontario and in 1966 the McMichael officially opened to the public. The permanent collection now consists of over 6,400 artworks. The iconic Canadian landscape artist Tom Thomson (1877-1917) features prominently, as do his colleagues the Group of Seven and their contemporaries. Historic and contemporary Indigenous art accounts for over a third of the total collection and is celebrated in the Gallery's dynamic exhibition program. Here, Ian Dejardin's personal selection of highlights offers a revelatory opportunity to engage with the essence of Canada as portrayed in the luminous works of its artists.
