Book excerpt: Bearings and Distances by Glenn Arbery, is a novel of comic ironies and tragic recurrences set in the "post-racial" moment of the American experiment. In the summer after Barack Obama's election, Hermia Watson, a scholar of black history, lures the famous (and famously irresponsible) Professor Braxton Forrest back to his hometown in Georgia, using his two daughters as unwitting hostages. Returning alone while his pious wife continues touring Italy, Forrest arrives to the tremblings of his abandoned past and a confrontation with the Furies he thought modernity had left behind. In the course of a few days, Hermia realizes what violent revelations she has begun to unleash about her former lover, her mother, and her own identity-but it is too late to stop what is coming to light. Arbery revisits the obsessions of the 20th century Southern renaissance in a work that satirizes misconceptions and shallow pieties but takes seriously the wisdom of the Southern literary tradition-and its classical antecedents.

Book excerpt: Outdoor Education: Methods and Strategies, Second Edition, provides all the necessary information and tools for teaching outdoor education. Future educators will learn how to create optimal learning opportunities in outdoor environments, how to design effective lessons, and how to identify and use the methods that are best for the place and the participants. These teaching methods apply to a variety of organizations, including schools, nature centers, adventure centers, camps, environmental learning centers, government agencies, and universities. Outdoor Education: Methods and Strategies, Second Edition, is divided into three parts. Part I defines what outdoor education is and details the professional expectations for an outdoor educator. It also explores theories that support outdoor education, including developmental stages, learning stages, and constructivism. Part II guides the reader to understand the backgrounds and abilities of participants, create a successful learning environment, teach effectively in a variety of settings, and design lesson plans. Part III examines the uses of physical, cognitive, and affective methods for teaching, and it includes sample lesson plans that illustrate the methods presented. These chapters help students reflect on, evaluate, and improve their lesson plans through experimentation. Presented by authors with a combined 150 years of experience in the field, the methods and strategies in this book have been tested and proven to work in a variety of outdoor settings. This second edition covers theories such as scaffolding, brain-based learning, Erik Erikson’s eight stages of development as applied to outdoor education, playful learning, and nature play as well as the use of technology in outdoor education. This text supplements theory with tools to support practical application: Easy-to-use forms for designing, implementing, and evaluating outdoor lesson plans Nine sample lesson plans offering detailed instructions and representing a variety of settings for different age groups and abilities Updated Stories From Real Life case studies that illustrate how methods are applied in the real world Explore Your World sidebars prompting students to reflect on their own experiences and goals Tips and Techniques sidebars offering brief and actionable advice for educators New Professional’s Perspective sidebars featuring insights from real practitioners about core content and topics in the book Students will also find a number of learning aids—including chapter objectives, review questions, and a glossary—to enhance knowledge retention. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of The Surveying Handbook, although a ground breaker, was widely accepted. However, surveying is a dynamic profession with each new development just one step ahead of the next, and updating became critical. In addition, the editors received constructive criticism about the first edition that needed to be addressed. So, while the objective of The Handbook remains intact, the logical evolution of the profession, along with the need to recognize constructive criticism, led to the second edition. chapters have been added on water boundaries, boundary law, and geodetic positioning New satellites. The chapter on land data systems was rewritten to provide a dramatic updating of information, thus broadening the coverage of The Handbook. The same may be said for the state plane coordinate chapter. The material on public lands and construction surveying was reorganized as well. Appendices were added to tabulate some information that was buried in the earlier edition in several places. Numerous other changes were incorporated to help the handbook retain its profession-wide scope, one step beyond the scope of an upper-division college textbook. Along with the most sophisticated techniques and equipment, the reader can find information on techniques once popular and still important. Four new authors are welcomed to the list of contributors: Grenville Barnes, R. B. Buckner, Donald A. Wilson, and Charles D. Ghilani.
