Book excerpt: The advent of low-cost and lightweight CubeSats has opened up new possibilities to realize the Internet of Space (IoS), a vision that aims to establish a constellation of CubeSats in space to provide global network access. A key challenge for IoS realization is the development of beam steerable antennas that can meet the gain, bandwidth, and polarization requirements for IoS while complying with the small form factor of CubeSats. This work addresses this challenge by proposing innovative synthesis and implementation methods for reflectarrays and transmitarrays to empower low-profile wideband circularly-polarized (CP) beam steerable antennas. Two unique steerable antenna architectures are presented. The first design is a K-band mechanically steerable Risley prism antenna (RPA) constructed by two co-axially placed panels, i.e., a gradient-phase feed array (GPFA), and a gradient-phase transmitarray (GPTA). The in-plane rotation of the two panels creates beam scan that covers 0 - 360 in azimuth and 0 - 60 in elevation. To improve the CP bandwidth, a hybrid-phasing method is applied to design the GPFA, and an S-ring element unit cell is designed for the GPTA. The second design is an electronically steerable reflectarray antenna. Each unit cell can implement switches to reconfigure the connections among multiple Archimedean spiral arms, creating ``element rotation'' that leads to geometrically dependent CP phase shift. This allows the reflectarray to achieve wideband CP beam steering without any moving parts. Both antennas have been validated through prototypes and measurements to demonstrate their beam scanning capability and bandwidth potentials for CubeSat applications. Besides, a generalized design methodology for switch-reconfigured unit cells (SRUC) to achieve the maximum phase resolution is established. It applies binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO) algorithm to optimize the topology of pixelated unit cells with embedded switches. Unconventional linearly-polarized (LP) and CP 2-switch 4-state SRUC for K-band beam steerable reflectarrays have been designed and thoroughly validated. Lastly, the novel charge-programmed multi-material (CPMM) additive manufacturing technology is applied to innovate antenna design and fabrication. Several ultra-lightweight CP transmitarrays achieving order-of-magnitude weight reduction and a compact CP horn antenna with uniquely designed 3D structures have been manufactured and measured. This dissertation addresses the cutting edges of CubeSat beam steerable antennas from several aspects, including the fundamental principles, synthesis methods, antenna architectures, and manufacturing methods.

With advancements in digital signal processing, power electronics, and packaging technology, it is feasible to fit science instruments and communication devices that were traditionally carried on larger satellites on CubeSat consolations. This not only reduces mission cost, repair, risk, but also provides more precise and real-time science data. Their low cost and versatility allow for CubeSats to be used to test technologies that are planned to use on larger satellites, to collect point-to-point data in space when launched as CubeSat constellations, or to monitor health of larger spacecrafts. This comprehensive reference explores CubeSat standards, launching methods, and detailed design guidelines for antennas specially made for CubeSat applications. Deployed CubeSat antennas, such as low gain antennas, high gain wire-based antennas, and horn and dish antennas as they relate to the technology are explored. Conformal CubeSat Antennas, including those that are independent of CubeSats and those integrated in CubeSat solar panels, are discussed. An antenna design guideline is provided to demonstrate the basics of a CubeSat link budget, which is transitionally published in signal and system community. Written by an expert in the field, this book enables readers to read antenna specifics when choosing communication front-end.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beam steerable antennas are considered as a possible solution for meeting challenges in military and civilian systems such as satellite communication networks, automotive collision avoidance radar, base stations and biomedical applications. Phased array antennas are a natural choice as the foundation for many steerable antenna platform due to its exibility and gain scalability. The implementation of a phased array requires a large number of electronic components, tending to drive the cost of phased arrays and limit their usage to military applications. The electrically steerable parasitic array radiator (ESPAR) has been introduced as an antenna which is capable of adaptively controlling its beam pattern using parasitic elements loaded with varactors. ESPAR has attracted the attention of researchers from the desire for electrically scanned beams with inexpensive fabrication and has found as a suitable candidate for communication systems applications, including advanced radars, cellular base stations and space communications. The ultimate goal of this research is to design and propose state of the art designs in the eld of ESPAR that can satisfy the requirements of today's advanced communication systems, which should be cost-e ective and can compete with other rival technologies. Considering the potentials of ESPAR, it can be proved that it is a good candidate for modern wireless communications. The thesis presents several contributions related to the design and analysis of ESPAR technology using dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) as the main radiator element. First, the thesis presents solutions to alleviate the problems associated in implementing a large ESPAR. The large array is useful in many applications since some required recon gurable radiation characteristics may not be achievable with a single ESPAR element. The proposed structure consists of 240 perforated DRAs, whichare uniformly excited by a parallel-series feeding network. By employing the perforation technique, the need for aligning and bonding individual DRA is eliminated. The subarrays are placed in an interleaved arrangement to suppress the grating lobes. The proposed large ESPAR can incredibly reduce the number of phase shifter by 80% in comparison with the conventional phased array, which makes it inexpensive. Second, the thesis investigates potentials of ESPAR for massive multi-input multiple output (MIMO) communication. Massive MIMO technology has attracted tremendous interest due to its capabilities in enhancing the data transmission capacity, increasing the reliability, and reducing the multipath fading. However, in this technology for feeding each individual antenna, one radio frequency chain is required that can increase the power consumption and complexity of the structure. Moreover, to obtain decorrelated channels and to reduce mutual coupling, the antenna should be spaced suffciently far from each other that imposes increased physical dimensions. In contrast to the conventional MIMO structures, in ESPAR only one RF chain is needed and the small size constraint turns to be an advantage as the mutual coupling is exploited to form the desired signals. Furthermore, by controlling the tunable loads at each parasitic antenna element, different radiation patterns can be formed which can signi cantly improve the performance of a MIMO antenna system operating in a changing environment. Thus, by using the advantages of ESPAR, a design approach to address the size and cost issues is proposed through this work. The proposed design is validated by simulation and measurement of a prototype, and results include the antenna and MIMO gure of merits such as radiation patterns, efficiency, S-parameters, signal correlations, total active reection coeffcient (TARC), and channel capacity. These results have demonstrated that the proposed ESPAR design can be successfully implemented for a massive MIMO structure. Finally, the thesis presents an effective method to design a ESPAR with a circularly polarized (CP) beam-scanning feature. Circular polarization is an ideal polarization due to its advantages in signal propagation properties, which can address the di culties associated with mobility, inclement weather conditions, and immunity to multi path distortion. In this work, the CP beam steering is achieved by adopting a sequential rotation approach for placing the parasitic antennas that are loaded with tunable varactors. The proposed CP-ESPAR technique eliminates the need of expensive phase shifters, which signi cantly reduces cost and fabrication complexity. For performance evaluation, a prototype of the proposed antenna is designed, fabricated, and measured. It is observed that the proposed antenna has a monotonic CP beam scanning from { 22 to 22 operating at 10.5 GHz.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a S-band phased array antenna for CubeSat applications. Existing state-of the-art high gain antenna systems are not well suited to the majority of CubeSats, those that fall within the 1U (10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm) to 3U (10 cm x 10 cm x 30 cm) size ranges and in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The system presented in this thesis is designed specifically to meet the needs of those satellites. This system is designed to fit on the 1U face (10 cm x 10 cm) of a CubeSat and requires no deployables. The use of beamforming and retrodirective algorithms reduces the pointing requirements of the antenna, easing the strict requirements that high gain antennas typically force on a CubeSat mission. Additionally, this design minimizes volume and uses low cost Commercial-off-the-Shelf (COTS) parts. This thesis discusses the theoretical background of phased array theory and retrodirective algorithms. Analysis are presented that show the characteristics and advantages of retrodirective phased antenna systems. Preliminary trade studies and design analyses show the feasibility and expected performance of a system utilizing existing COTS parts. The preliminary analysis shows that an antenna system can be achieved with ≥8.5 dBi of gain, 27dB of transmitted signal gain, 20% Power Added Efficiency (PAE) within a 1 W to 2 W power output, and an 80° effective beamwidth. Simulation results show an example antenna array that achieves 8.14 dBi of gain and an 82° effective beamwidth. Testing results on a prototype of the front-end electronics show that with minimal calibration, the beamforming and scanning error can be reduced to 5°. The power consumption and signal gain of the electronics is also verified through testing. The CubeSat Communications Platform, a CubeSat mission funded through the Air Force Research Laboratory is in Phase A design to demonstrate this antenna system, along with other experimental payloads. This thesis includes a discussion of interface control, mission requirements, operations, and a recommended experiment sequence to test and verify the antenna system on orbit.
