Book excerpt: To understand the partonic structure of nucleons in nuclei, measuring the beam spin asymmetry (BSA) from exclusive processes is important to get at the so-called Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) that describe the partons' behavior inside the nucleon. In particular, BSA in Deeply Virtual Meson Production (DVMP) can offer valuable constraints on the transverse GPDs which are not accessible with other exclusive processes. Furthermore, DVMP measurements on bound nucleons can offer insights into structure modification due to the nuclear environment. The interpretation of this bounded nucleon DVMP on nuclear targets rests on the assumption of factorization and that higher-order effects are negligible. These assumptions can be tested through measurement of nuclear DVMP on a spin-0 target, where at leading order the BSA should be zero. In the CLAS EG6 experiment, the spin-0 helium-4 gas target is probed via the deeply virtual (Q^2 > 2 (GeV/c)^2) photons from 6 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons. The results of coherent meson electroproduction of pi-zero off heliium-4, where the BSA is measured to be consistent with zero, will be presented and discussed. This benchmark measurement is in agreement with symmetry arguments of a recent theoretical formulation that offers a framework complementary to that of the GPDs and gives confidence in the assumptions made for future studies of exclusive nuclear processes.

The xB, Q2, t and phi dependences of the pi0 BSA are presented in the deep inelastic regime. The asymmetries are fitted with a sin[phi] function and their amplitudes are extracted. Overall, they are of the order of 0.04 - 0.11 and roughly independent of t. This is the signature of a non-zero longitudinal-transverse interference. The implications concerning the applicability of a formalism based on generalized parton distributions, as well as the extension of a Regge formalism at high photon virtualities, are discussed.

A{sup sin?}{sub LU} is a twist-3 quantity providing information about quark-gluon correlations. Data were taken with the CLAS Spectrometer at Jefferson Lab using a 5.498 GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam and an unpolarized liquid hydrogen target. All three pion channels (pi, pi° and pi−) were measured simultaneously over a large range of kinematics within the virtuality range Q2 ̃1.0-4.5 GeV2. The observable was measured with good statistical precision over a large range of z, P{sub T}, x{sub B}, and Q2, which permits comparison with several reaction models. The discussed measurements provide an upgrade in statistics over previous measurements, and serve as the first evidence for the negative sign of the?− sin? Moment.

The asymmetry is due to interference of longitudinal and transverse photoabsorption amplitudes which have different phases induced by the final-state interaction between the struck quark and the target spectators. We developed a dynamical model for a single-spin beam asymmetry in deep-inelastic scattering. Our results are consistent with the experimentally observed magnitude of this effect. We conclude that similar mechanisms involving quark orbital angular momentum ('Sivers effect') are responsible for both target and beam single-spin asymmetries.

Book excerpt: Measurements of the beam spin asymmetry (BSA) of the exclusive electroproduction of the vector phi(1020) meson through its decay into charged Kaons have been performed. The data set used was based on the RG-A run period from the recently upgraded CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS12) in Hall B at Jefferson National Lab (JLab). The run period used a 10.6 GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam and an unpolarized hydrogen target. The available statistics collected allow for detailed studies of the W, -t, xB, and Q2 dependencies of the BSA amplitudes from phi production. The BSA measurements will shed light on the exchange mechanisms responsible for phi production at JLab energies. In this dissertation, a non-zero BSA is observed, which suggests a possible enhancement of pseudo-scalar exchange mechanism near production threshold. Therefore, the non-zero BSA may be a result of the interference of the pseudo-scalar exchange mechanism with a scalar one. Ultimately, information on the dominant exchange mechanism will aid in the development of a Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) based description of these processes in the context of hard to soft transition.

Book excerpt: The polarized longitudinal-transverse structure function sigma_LT'in the p(e, e'p)pi^0 reaction has been measured for the first time in the Delta(1232) resonance region for invariant mass W = 1.1 - 1.3 GeV and at four-momentum transfer Q^2 = 0.40 and 0.65 GeV^2. Data were taken at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) using longitudinally polarized electrons at an energy of 1.515 GeV. This newly measured sigma_LT' provides new and unique information on the interference between resonant and non-resonant amplitudes in the Delta(1232) resonance region. The comparison to recent phenomenological calculations shows sensitivity to the description of non-resonant amplitudes and higher resonances.

Book excerpt: The overarching goal of this analysis, and many like it, is to develop our understanding of the strong force interactions within the nucleon by examining the nature of their excitation spectra. As the resonances of these spectra have very short lifetimes (tau = 1x10-23 s) and often have very similar masses, it is often impossible to directly observe resonances in the excitation spectra of nucleons. Polarization observables allow us to study the resonances by looking at how they affect the spin state of final state particles. The beam asymmetry is a polarization observable that allows us to detect the sensitivity of these resonances, and other transition mechanisms, to the electric vector orientation of incident photons. Presented in this thesis are first measurements of the beam asymmetries in the resonant region for the reaction channel pgamma p --> p [pi]+ [pi]-focusing on the intermediate mesonic states rho^0 and f^0, and the final state pions. The analysis used data from the g8b experiment undertaken at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab), the first experiment at JLab to use a linearly polarized photon beam. Using the coherent Bremsstrahlung facility and the CLAS detector of Hall B at JLab allowed for many multi-channel reactions to be detected and the first measurements of many polarization observables including those presented here. A brief overview of the theoretical framework used to undertake this analysis is given, followed by a description of the experimental details of the facilities used, then a description of the calibration of the Bremsstrahlung tagging facility which the author undertook, and finally the analysis is presented and the resulting measurements.

Book excerpt: A study of the polarized electron beam asymmetry in semi-exclusive (e, e(prime)p) reactions on 4He and 12C over a large kinematic range has been performed. The beam asymmetry A(prime){sub LT} is related to the imaginary part of the longitudinal-transverse interference and therefore it vanishes in reactions proceeding through a channel with a single dominant mechanism. In quasifree nucleon knockout, the helicity asymmetry provides an unambiguous signature for the interference between direct knockout and rescattering amplitudes. The data were taken in April-May 1999 using polarized beams of energies between 2.2 and 4.4 GeV, with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) detector located in Hall B at the Jefferson Laboratory, VA. The measured asymmetries compare well with the theoretical predictions.
