In this paper we survey the beam instrumentation requirements of the ILC and describe the system components which are expected to meet those requirements.

This trend continues today with the imminent commissioning of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, and the worldwide development effort toward the International Linear Collider. Looking ahead, there are two scientific areas ripe for further exploration--the energy frontier and the precision frontier. To explore the energy frontier, two approaches toward multi-TeV beams are being studied, an electron-positron linear collider based on a novel two-beam powering system (CLIC), and a Muon Collider. Work on the precision frontier involves accelerators with very high intensity, including a Super-BFactory and a muon-based Neutrino Factory. Without question, one of the most promising approaches is the development of muon-beam accelerators. Such machines have very high scientific potential, and would substantially advance the state-of-the-art in accelerator design. The challenges of the new generation of accelerators, and how these can be accommodated in the accelerator design, are described. To reap their scientific benefits, all of these frontier accelerators will require sophisticated instrumentation to characterize the beam and control it with unprecedented precision.

In the Next Linear Collider (NLC), high brightness multibunch e/e− beams, with I{sub {+-}} = 1012 particles/pulse and sigma{sub x, y} (approximately) 50 x 5 mu-m, originate in damping rings and are subsequently accelerated to several hundred GeV in 2 X-band 11,424 MHz linacs from which they emerge with typical sigma{sub x, y} (approximately) 7 x 1 mu-m. Following a high power collimation section the e/e− beams are focused to sigma{sub x, y} (approximately) 300 x 5 nm at the interaction point. In this paper they review the beam intensity, position and profile monitors (x, y, z), mechanical vibration sensing and stabilization systems, long baseline RF distribution systems and beam collimation hardware.

Book excerpt: The International Linear Collider (ILC) is a proposal for 500 GeV center-of-mass electron-positron collider, with a possible upgrade to (almost equal to)1 TeV center-of-mass. At the heart of the ILC are the two (almost equal to)12 km 1.3 GHz superconducting RF (SCRF) linacs which will accelerate the electron and positron beams to an initial maximum energy of 250 GeV each. The Global Design Effort (GDE)--responsible for the world-wide coordination of this uniquely international project--published the ILC Reference Design Report in August of 2007 [1]. The ILC outlined in the RDR design stands on a legacy of over fifteen-years of R & D. The GDE is currently beginning the next step in this ambitious project, namely an Engineering Design phase, which will culminate with the publication of an Engineering Design Report (EDR) in mid-2010. Throughout the history of linear collider development, beam dynamics has played an essential role. In particular, the need for complex computer simulations to predict the performance of the machine has always been crucial, not least because the parameters of the ILC represent in general a large extrapolation from where current machines operate today; many of the critical beam-dynamics features planned for the ILC can ultimately only be truly tested once the ILC has been constructed. It is for this reason that beam dynamics activities will continue to be crucial during the Engineering Design phase, as the available computer power and software techniques allow ever-more complex and realistic models of the machine to be developed. Complementary to the computer simulation efforts are the need for well-designed experiments at beam-test facilities, which--while not necessarily producing a direct demonstration of the ILC-like parameters for the reasons mentioned above--can provide important input and benchmarking for the computer models.

The TDR also gives baseline documentation for two high-performance detectors that can share the ILC luminosity by being moved into and out of the beam line in a "push-pull" configuration. These detectors, ILD and SiD, are described in detail. They form the basis for a world-class experimental programme that promises to increase significantly our understanding of the fundamental processes that govern the evolution of the Universe.

Book excerpt: Accelerators that collide high energy beams of matter and anti-matter are essential tools for the investigation of the fundamental constituents of matter, and the search for new forms of matter and energy. A "Linear Collider" is a machine that would bring high energy and very compact bunches of electrons and positrons (anti-electrons) into head-on collision. Such a machine would produce (among many other things) the newly discovered Higgs particle, enabling a detailed study of its properties. Among the most critical and challenging components of a linear collider are the damping rings that produce the very compact and intense beams of electrons and positrons that are to be accelerated into collision. Hot dilute particle beams are injected into the damping rings, where they are compressed and cooled. The size of the positron beam must be reduced more than a thousand fold in the damping ring, and this compression must be accomplished in a fraction of a second. The cold compact beams are then extracted from the damping ring and accelerated into collision at high energy. The proposed International Linear Collider (ILC), would require damping rings that routinely produce such cold, compact and intense beams. The goal of the Cornell study was a credible design for the damping rings for the ILC. Among the technical challenges of the damping rings; the development of instrumentation that can measure the properties of the very small beams in a very narrow window of time, and mitigation of the forces that can destabilize the beams and prevent adequate cooling, or worse lead to beam loss. One of the most pernicious destabilizing forces is due to the formation of clouds of electrons in the beam pipe. The electron cloud effect is a phenomenon in particle accelerators in which a high density of low energy electrons, build up inside the vacuum chamber. At the outset of the study, it was anticipated that electron cloud effects would limit the intensity of the positron ring, and that an instability associated with residual gas in the beam pipe would limit the intensity of the electron ring. It was also not clear whether the required very small beam size could be achieved. The results of this study are important contributions to the design of both the electron and positron damping rings in which all of those challenges are addressed and overcome. Our findings are documented in the ILC Technical Design Report, a document that represents the work of an international collaboration of scientists. Our contributions include design of the beam magnetic optics for the 3 km circumference damping rings, the vacuum system and surface treatments for electron cloud mitigation, the design of the guide field magnets, design of the superconducting damping wigglers, and new detectors for precision measurement of beam properties. Our study informed the specification of the basic design parameters for the damping rings, including alignment tolerances, magnetic field errors, and instrumentation. We developed electron cloud modelling tools and simulations to aid in the interpretation of the measurements that we carried out in the Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring (CESR). The simulations provide a means for systematic extrapolation of our measurements at CESR to the proposed ILC damping rings, and ultimately to specify how the beam pipes should be fabricated in order to minimize the effects of the electron cloud. With the conclusion of this study, the design of the essential components of the damping rings is complete, including the development and characterization (with computer simulations) of the beam optics, specification of techniques for minimizing beam size, design of damping ring instrumentation, R & D into electron cloud suppression methods, tests of long term durability of electron cloud coatings, and design of damping ring vacuum system components.
