Book excerpt: It is shown that with the appropriate lattice and collimation design, one can control beam loss in the 16 GeV Fermilab Proton Driver. Based on detailed Monte-Carlo simulations, a 3-stage collimation system is proposed which consists of primary, secondary and supplementary collimators located in a special 60 m long injection section along with a painting system. It allows localization of more than 99% of beam loss to this section with only a 0.3 W/m (on average) beam loss rate in the rest of the machine. As a result, beam loss and induced radiation effects in lattice elements can be reduced to levels which are defined as acceptable.

The main concerns are the hands-on maintenance and ground-water activation. Only with a very efficient beam collimation system can one reduce uncontrolled beam losses to an allowable level. The results on tolerable beam loss and on a proposed beam collimation system are summarized in this paper. A multi-turn particle tracking in the accelerator defined by all lattice components with their realistic strengths and aperture restrictions, and halo interactions with the collimators is done with the STRUCT code [2]. Full-scale Monte Carlo hadronic and electromagnetic shower simulations in the lattice elements, shielding, tunnel and surrounding dirt with realistic geometry, materials and magnetic field are done with the MARS14 code [3]. It is shown that the proposed 3-stage collimation system, allows localization of more than 99% of beamloss in a special straight section. Beam loss in the rest of the accelerator is 0.2 W/m on average.

Book excerpt: A high beam power in the proposed Fermilab Proton Drivers--1.2 MW in 16-GeV PD-I and 0.48 MW in 8-GeV PD-II--implies serious constraints on beam losses in these machines. Only with a very efficient beam collimation system can one reduce uncontrolled beam losses in the machine to an allowable level. The entire complex must be well shielded to allow acceptable hands-on maintenance conditions in the tunnel and a non-controlled access to the outside shielding at normal operation and accidental beam loss. Collimation and shielding performances are calculated and compared for both Proton Drivers.

Book excerpt: The radiation transport analysis in the proposed Fermi-lab 1.2 MWProton Driver (PD) [1] is fundamentally important because of the impact on machine performance, conventional facility design, maintenance operations, and related costs. The strategy adopted in the PD design is that the beam losses in the machine are localized and controlled as much as possible via the dedicated beam collimation system, with a high loss rate localized in that section and drastically lower uncontrolled beam loss rate in the rest of the lattice. Results of thorough Monte Carlo calculations of prompt and residual radiation in and around the PD components are presented for realistic assumptions and geometry under normal operation and accidental conditions. This allowed one to conduct shielding design and analysis to meet regulatory requirements [2] for external shielding, hands-on maintenance and ground-water activation.

Book excerpt: The major difference of these two versions is the size (circumference) and the maximum energy. In the first study, the circumference is chosen to be 711.3m, which is 1.5 times the present Booster, with the maximum energy of 16 GeV. In the second version, it is mandated to be the same as Booster together with the same maximum energy of 8 GeV. One of the major impacts of the reduced size of the ring is the inevitable reduction in the total length of available space for injection/collimation/extraction systems and for rf cavities, 14 slots of 7.43m each in the smaller ring compared with 24 slots of 6.15m each in the larger ring. Since each cavity occupies a slot of 2.35m and 22 cavities are desirable, seven or eight slots out of 14 in the smaller ring must be reserved for rf, only six or seven remaining for all other systems. The constraint in space is particularly troublesome for the extraction system since the beam loss at extraction (at the highest beam energy) is the major concern of any high intensity proton machines.

Book excerpt: Over the past year a team in the Beams Division has been working on the proton driver for Fermilab. Significant progresses have been made to reach the Phase 1 design goals. A Phase 1 proton driver consists of a modest improvement of the linac front end, a new 16 GeV synchrotron in a new tunnel and two new beam lines (400 MeV and 16 GeV). It meets the needs of a neutrino factory and can provide a 1.2 MW proton beam with 3 ns bunch length. It also allows an upgrade path to a beam power of 4 MW and bunch length of 1 ns, which will be required by a future muon collider. In addition to serve a neutrino factory and/or a muon collider, the system would also serve as a complete functional replacement for the Fermilab Booster, providing upgraded capabilities in the future for the programs that the Booster would otherwise have served. New physics programs based on the stand-alone capabilities of the proton driver as an intense source of proton beams would also be enabled. The Fermilab management has scheduled an internal technical review of the proton driver design study on April 17--19, 2000. A complete design report will be due early 2001.

Book excerpt: The Fermilab Main Injector is moving toward providing 400 kW of 120 GeV proton beams using slip stacking injection of eleven Booster batches. Loss of 5% of the beam at or near injection energy results in 1.5 kW of beam loss. A collimation system has been implemented to localize this loss with the design emphasis on beam not captured in the accelerating RF buckets. More than 95% of these losses are captured in the collimation region. We will report on the construction, commissioning and operation of this collimation system. Commissioning studies and loss measurement tools will be discussed. Residual radiation monitoring of the Main Injector machine components will be used to demonstrate the effectiveness of these efforts.

Book excerpt: Results of the collimation studies for the ILC positron source beam line are presented. The calculations of primary positron beam loss are done using the ELEGANT code. The secondary positron and electron beam loss, the synchrotron radiation along the beam line and the bremsstrahlung radiation in the collimators are simulated using the STRUCT code. The first part of the collimation system, located right after the positron source target (0.125 GeV), is used for protection of the RF Linac sections from heating and radiation. The second part of the system is used for final collimation before the beam injection into the Damping Ring at 5 GeV. The calculated power loss in the collimation region is within 100 W/m, with the loss in the collimators of 0.2-5 kW. The beam transfer efficiency from the target to the Damping Ring is 13.5%.

Book excerpt: Based on realistic Monte-Carlo simulations a two-stage beam collimation system is designed to minimize the beam loss in the Fermilab Tevatron for fixed target and collider Run II. Thin primary collimators are used to increase particle amplitude and their impact parameter on the down-stream secondary collimators. This results in a significant reduction of the total beam loss in the machine, decreases collimator overheating and mitigates requirements to colli-mator alignment. A set of collimators will originally be in-stalled for fixed target operation and for antiprotonbeam re-cycling studies. The collimation system improvement will continue into the collider Run II and intensity upgrade.

Book excerpt: Results of modeling with the 3-D STRUCT and MARS15 codes of beam loss localization and related radiation effects are presented for the slipstacking injection to the Fermilab Main Injector. Simulations of proton beam loss are done using multi-turn tracking with realistic accelerator apertures, nonlinear fields in the accelerator magnets and time function of the RF manipulations to explain the results of beam loss measurements. The collimation system consists of one primary and four secondary collimators. It intercepts a beam power of 1.6 kW at a scraping rate of 5% of 5.5E+13 ppp, with a beam loss rate in the ring outside the collimation region of 1 W/m or less. Based on thorough energy deposition and radiation modeling, a corresponding collimator design was developed that satisfies all the radiation and engineering constraints.

Book excerpt: In high intensity proton rings, collimation is needed in order to maintain reasonable levels of residual activation and allow hands-on maintenance. Small acceptance to emittance ratio and restrained longitudinal space become important restrictions when dealing with low energy rings. The constraints and specifications when designing a collimation system for this type of machine will be reviewed. The SNS accumulator ring will serve as an examples long which we will illustrate the optimization path. Experimental studies of collimation with 1.3 GeV proton beams are currently under way in the U-70 machine in Protvino. The first results will be presented.
