Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not like the others . . . Bonfire Beach, South Carolina. The exclusive beachfront community is old money, the best of everything, and its genteel residents don’t take kindly to those who aren’t like them. And to say that Stacy Storm isn’t like them is an understatement. For one thing, he’s a disgraced reality TV star and tabloid fodder. For another, he’s a world-renowned psychic proven to be a fraud - at least in part. For a third, he’s moved into the notorious McClean mansion - the very mansion whose relevance in Bonfire Beach history all would prefer to forget. And that’s just what the people of Bonfire know about. From childhood on, Stacy has been different. Neglected by his mother and bullied by his peers, he learned in his teens that he is, in fact, very much wanted in another realm, of which very few others are even aware. His gift is a double-edged sword, bringing him validation and approval by way of a daily nightmare that stars only Stacy - and them. He hates them. He fears them. He needs them. And he’s come to Bonfire Beach to find them. This is the beginning.

This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the coast all is not what it seems. Decades of beachfront development have seen a variety of efforts to stabilize the shoreline to protect ill-placed beachfront property, both from shoreline erosion and from storm damage. Both of these problems become increasingly critical in a time of rising sea level. Many natural beaches are backed by sea walls, while others have been transformed by whole series of groynes, offshore breakwaters and a plethora of other schemes. Many recreational beaches are actually artificial replicas of the real thing, emplaced to protect badly placed infrastructure and maintained only through ongoing costly beach nourishment. However, all of these attempts to stabilize the shoreline are far from benign. Degradation and even complete loss of the all important recreational beach sometimes results from seawall emplacement. Increasingly, the choice of shoreline stabilization approach will depend upon plans for future response to rising seas which in many cases may involve retreat from the shoreline rather than holding the line. This book explores, through a series of case studies from around the globe, the pitfalls of shoreline stabilization and provides a ready reference for those with an interest in shoreline management. It is particularly timely in a time of global change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nova Scotia has a wealth of beautiful beaches, some well known, others hidden and treasured by those who know them. Beaches are incredibly rich in what they reveal about ecological processes and diversity. As a biologist and naturalist, Allan Billard wanted to share the secrets that often lie in plain sight to those in the know. For this book, he chose 27 of the province's beaches, drawn from every region. Some are well known -- Lawrencetown, Martinique, Melmerby, and Blomidon. Others are well worth knowing. The narrative text, enhanced by photographer Donna Barnett’s striking images, focuses on a natural process each beach illustrates, including wetland evolution, formation of a barrier beach, salt ponds, and fish nurseries. The themes span a wide range of interests. Nova Scotia Beaches will enhance the experience of visiting any beach, but it also showcases the uniqueness of each of the 27 featured in the collection. This book draws the reader in and, in words and pictures, shows the astonishing and fascinating diversity of Nova Scotia's coastal landscape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beaches of the Victorian Coast and Port Phillip Bay provides the first description of all Victorian ocean and Port Phillip Bay beaches. It is based on the results of the Victorian section of the Australian Beach Safety and Management Program. This book has two aims. First, to provide the public with general information on the origin and nature of all Victoria's beaches, including the contribution of geology, oceanography, climate and biota to the beaches, and information on beach hazards and safety. Second, to provide a description of each beach, including its name(s), location, access, facilities, dimensions and the character of the beach and surf zone. The book comments on the suitability of the beach for bathing, surfing and fishing, with special emphasis on the natural hazards. Based on the physical hazards, all beaches are rated in terms of public safety and scaled from 1 (least hazardous) to 10 (most hazardous).
