Book excerpt: Manfield Young, 194th Tank Battalion, and Manny Eneriz, 31st All American Infantry Regiment, awakened on 7 December 1941 to face the beginning of World War II. They fought valianty against unbelievable odds and were surrendered 9 April 1942. They survived the Bataan Death March and three and a half years as POWs, much of it as slaves in Japanese mines under absolute inhumane treatment. Details of their daily lives fighting the enemy and as prisoners of the enemy came from direct interviews with the surviving ex-POWs. The book reviews the poor preparation by the United States for the anticipated attack by Japan and questionable leadership in the Pacific, particularly General Douglas MacArthur. In the early periods of the war, America's only real defense and offense was the thin line of submarines. The American submarine greatly interfaced with American POWs by forcing an early end of the war by the destruction of the Japanese merchant marine and a large share of the Japanese Navy. The "Pigboats" saved many American lives, supported guerrilla and fleet operations, but also cost the lives of thousands of Allied POWs when sinking unmarked Japanese "hellships." The American Submarine Force, combined with Navy, Marine and Army aircraft, caused a delay in the Japanese nuclear weapon development. This permitted America's atomic bombs to end the war and save millions of American and Japanese lives. There is significant evidence the Japanese were close to an operational atomic weapon at war's end. Bob Harmuth

Book excerpt: In November 1944, the U.S. Navy fleet lay at anchor deep in the Pacific Ocean, when the oiler USS Mississinewa exploded. Japan’s secret weapon, the Kaiten—a manned suicide submarine—had succeeded in its first mission. The Kaiten was so secret that even Japanese naval commanders didn’t know of its existence. And the Americans kept it secret as well. Embarrassed by the attack, the U.S. Navy refused to salvage the sunken Mighty Miss. Not until 2001, when a diving team located the wreck, would survivors learn what really happened. In Kaiten, Michael Mair and Joy Waldron tell the full story, from newly revealed secrets of the Kaiten development and training schools to gripping firsthand accounts of U.S. Navy survivors in the wake of the attack, as well as the harrowing recovery efforts that came later. Book excerpt: This book is an in-depth analysis of three of the most crucial years in twentieth-century Italian history, the years 1943-46. After more than two decades of a Fascist regime and a disastrous war experience during which Italy changed sides, these years saw the laying of the political and cultural foundations for what has since become known as Italy's First Republic. Drawing on texts from the literature, film, journalism, and political debate of the period, Antifascisms offers a thorough survey of the personalities and positions that informed the decisions taken in this crucial phase of modern Italian history.

Book excerpt: "On April 16, 2001, at 12:10h (local time) at Ulithi Atoll in the Federated States of Micronesia, USS Mississinewa (A)-59), the ghost ship of Ulithi Lagoon, is located. Thus ended an odyssey that began May 18, 1944 when the US Navy tanker was commissioned. Fifty seven year earlier USS Mississinewa had been sunk by Japan's secret weapon. The Japanese kaiten was an underwater craft, designed as a human torpedo and built solely as a suicide weapon. On that Monday morning, Sub-lieutenant Seiko Nishina steered his forty-eight-foot long kaiten into Ulithi lagoon and vowed, "I must not fail ... The emperor will reign 10,000 years!" Nishina's last view was the large numeral 59 on the starboard bow of Mississinewa. Nishina reached for the chout-su handle and the kaiten surged forward. Death was certain now. Duty, honor, patriotism, courage, hope and faith - these words inspired countless members of the twentieth century's 'Greatest generation' who fought for the United States in WWII, the greatest conflict in human history. The author heard the same words from aging Japanese veterans who fought to save Japan from inevitable defeat with a devastating, almost incomprehensible, weapon the Imperial Japanese Navy called kaiten."--Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Follow the men who fought America's first battle in World War II--their will, their resolve, the odds against them, their surrender, the Death March, their imprisonment, and the few who escaped to continue the fight. After the destruction of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the U.S. Army on Bataan was forced to surrender to the Japanese and70,000 American and Filipino soldiers became Prisoners of War. Over the next three years, almost two-thirds of them would die in Japanese custody. However, a few hundred Americans refused to surrender, evaded the Japanese Army, and slipped into the jungle to hide and await the return of General MacArthur. Some joined Filipino guerrilla bands hoping to help the war effort during the months they would wait. But months turned into years, and there was no sign of General MacArthur or his army. At home in the United States their families waited for them, not knowing if their men were dead or alive. Bataan Diary is the remarkable true chronicle of the American prisoners, evaders and guerrillas, trapped in the Philippines during the Japanese occupation.

A masterpiece of technical exposition, it was the basic textbook of astronomy for more than a thousand years, and still is the main source for our knowledge of ancient astronomy. This translation, based on the standard Greek text of Heiberg, makes the work accessible to English readers in an intelligible and reliable form. It contains numerous corrections derived from medieval Arabic translations and extensive footnotes that take account of the great progress in understanding the work made in this century, due to the discovery of Babylonian records and other researches. It is designed to stand by itself as an interpretation of the original, but it will also be useful as an aid to reading the Greek text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a brave American veteran comes an eyewitness account of a gruesome chapter in World War II history. Captured when America surrendered the PhilippinesBataan Peninsula, James Bollich experienced first-hand the march that cost more than 8,000 American and Filipino lives. Now, he shares the unforgettable experience of his three and a half years of Japanese imprisonment. This journal relates his personal experience, first focusing on the sixty-five-mile march that deprived prisoners of food, water, and rest. Prisoners received harsh punishments for any infraction, one of the most brutal of these being the policy of beheading them for taking a sip of water. Rather than force him to give up, these things made Bollich fight for life even more. Witnessing his comrades falling beside him and watching his own body waste away to ninety pounds, he never yielded his will to survive. After completing the march, he remained a prisoner of war, first at an old Philippine army base, then in another camp at Mukden, Manchuria. He relates his imprisonment in detail, from starvation and torture to digging their own comrades graves in the hot sun, without hats or water. Through it all, he remained courageous and hopeful that he would one day make it back home. His story reminds both past and present generations of the horror and brutality of the Pacific war, all the while providing an inspiring testament to the will ofthe human spirit.
