Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about a little girl whose life has been strewn between the rocks and gravel that accumulated over a life time. It was the possibilities that kept her going. She grew up a loner even though she had a big family. She grew up in a Christian home and believed in God that no matter how inexplicable or unbelievable things can be, miracles are real and can occur without regards to the nature of things. Everyone she trusted would let her down and hurt her. She was between a rock and a hard place; she felt lonely, unwanted, and confused, as if she was in a dark room with no exit. Eventually, she met and fell in love with a handsome young man, the love of her lifeor so she thought. She was relieved, with more confidence; life was good, and it seems like there was a bright light at the end of the tunnel. For a moment, everything was going well, until dilemma stroke. The secrets she had to keep almost took her life because she could not share it. She had to put up with a lot of discomfort and even misery in her life that had been inflected by people she trusted, but somehow she felt she was to be blamed. She always knew in her heart and mind that God promised never to leave or forsake her.

Book excerpt: A true story and compilation of situations that left one woman scarred and overwhelmed, yet empowered to create an organization that promotes women as Battered but not Broken; the Confessions of a Battered Beautie, told by Andon Elsa are used as a declaration of self-worth and as relief from the isolation and heartache endured through suffering. With the introduction of a Beautie as a woman whose beauty is not measured merely by attractiveness, but rather by an increased amount of confidence, love, and faith, this empowering book focuses on life moving forward in a favorable direction with a faith based twist. There is not only the unprecedented Andon process offered, which is refreshing to females feeling attacked, criticized, or overwhelmed, but also, an organization established that provides a tailored experience for women seeking fulfilment that hasn't been found in men, children, work, or friends. After molestation, physical abuse, a teenage pregnancy, and chapter titles such as "Big Booty and a Smile" or "Making Love," it is easy to get addicted to the drama in Elsa's life as she reveals her truth about being a Battered Beautie and the effects on her relationships, respect, and religion. Married for nearly a decade, her unforgettable journey is impressive as it defies stereotypes, and her composure gives inspiration in a brutal but brief way, while acknowledging that even Jesus was a victim and battered. A Chicago native, Elsa Black now lives in the Western Hills of Cincinnati and works night shifts in Human Resources as a way to utilize open dialogue and honest communication for the purpose of empowerment through life skills, time management, and finances. Andon Elsa founded Battered Beauties, Inc. in 2013 utilizing nearly ten years of health care and customer service experience. Elsa enjoys writing, boating, swimming, and traveling. Her favorite scripture is, Psalms 118:11, because it signifies the importance of empowerment, scripture, and faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bev Gilliard writes in the field of Christian intimate literature and poetry that are transformational, revelatory, provocative, convicting, bold; eloquent, blunt, and transparently intense. This book is like none other in that it offers a close look at the actual personal experiences of an individual impacted by violence. "Battered, Beaten, Bruise, but not Broken" is a reminder that family violence is not a private matter and it pushes readers to ask tough questions about not only the destructive nature of family violence, child sexual assault, and suicide, but also about the toxicity of male privilege, and the dangerous effects of rape culture. It also pushes readers to examine themselves and what role we play in perpetuating violence against women and children by keeping silence, not getting educated on the subject, and not participating through our donations to causes or volunteering to end the violence. Bev has crafted a work that invites readers to stand up for what is right and challenges men to do better in their relationships, and on a whole in speaking out about violence. We are stronger together, and together we can speak out and stop the violence.

When she leaves Kyle for the last time, she knows the only way she’ll ever be back in his grasp is over her dead body. On the run, her car disastrously breaks down in at the top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere. Stuck in a terrible snowstorm, Gillian figures it’s better to die at the hands of nature, than at the hands of Kyle, her tormentor. Fighting the freezing cold, she stares death in the eye and presses on, until she happens upon a cabin in the woods, and is offered shelter by three gorgeous men who can’t seem to get enough of her. The Bearclaw brothers are descendants of the ancient Anikota tribe of Indians. Their beast spirit and blessing from the Maker allows them the ability to sense the one who will complete their soul. Being triplets, they always expected their mate to be a woman they’d all share. With the Maker’s blessing, they hope to ease past Gillian’s defenses…before her past threatens to end their future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her educational textbook style memoir, "Battered, Beaten, Bruised, But Not Broken," Bev candidly shared her detail experiences with Child Sexual Assault (CSA), Family Violence, Intimate Partner Violence, Aggravated Stalking, and the effects of abuse: Suicide and PTSD emotional trauma. Bev's story is very profound, and she addressed the moral and spiritual difficulties that challenge our Christian journey daily. Also, Bev explored the triumph of the human condition relative to God and presented the tenderness of His response.Bev also shared that even as a Christian, she had chosen relationships that were not healthy, and she had to say, "I do not" many times after saying, "I do." Bev says it is perfectly okay to correct the mistakes of our life once we recognize them. The problem exists when we see the writing on the wall, we know the relationship is unhealthy, we know our toxic situation is getting worst, yet we stay. There is nothing uncommon about individuals impacted by violence choosing to stay in bad relationships hoping against all hope that the person will change, or that they can fix the other person while trying to figure out, "What is wrong with me?" Impacted individuals will choose to stay in their abusive relationship for many reasons, including staying for the children, because of family values, cultural values, to save face, or they remain to wait for the connection to get better, discovering ten, fifteen, twenty years later, nothing is better. Sometimes they find they have lost their identity, lost their purpose, and sometimes, lost their will to live. Bev says, "Individuals impacted by any form of violence and mental trauma can recover and live a healthy and happy life, they just have to say no to abuse and yes to living." Some people, including young adults, stay out of fear, or because they do not want to be viewed as a failure. Therefore, it was essential to Bev to chronicle her journey, mental clarity, and overall sense of well-being through each phase of her experience in such a transparent and honest way that readers can travel her journey, feel her emotions and champion her resiliency. Also, Bev used this opportunity to educate on sexual assault, abuse, bullying, and stalking and the emotional toll on individuals impacted, and how our experiences do not have to define us. Although we will never forget, we can recover from abuse and can get through the experience and live a beautiful life. Trust God, have faith, believe, and be willing to say no to violence and yes to a life of peace.

Book excerpt: Sensational headlines were made in 1982 when a 13-year-old runaway from Georgia was killed. The victim had been injected with Drano, raped repeatedly, shot in the back, and ultimately pushed over the rim of Little River Canyon. This is the true story of the lawyer forced to represent the perpetrator of the heinous crimes, written by the lawyer himself. With theft, burglary, armed robbery, embezzlement, kidnapping, rape, two murders, the Neelley crime spree is one of the most gruesome in history. Robert B. French Jr. was assigned to represent Judith Ann Neelley, who was trying to exonerate her husband and take the blame herself. French weaves his own memories into this factual accounting of the investigation, trial, surrounding political intrigue, and crimes that will haunt your nightmares.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming an Ally is a book for men who want to end sexism, white people who want to end racism, straight people who want to end heterosexism, able-bodied people who want to end ableism — for all people who recognize their privilege and want to move toward a more just world by learning to act as allies. Has oppression always been with us, just part of “human nature”? What does individual healing have to do with social justice? What does social justice have to do with individual healing? Why do members of the same oppressed group fight one another, sometimes more viciously than they fight their oppressors? Why do some who experience oppression develop a life-long commitment to fighting oppression, while others turn around and oppress those with less power? In this accessible and enlightening book, now in its third edition, Anne Bishop examines history, economic and political structures, and individual psychology in a search for the origins of racism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism, ageism and all the other forms of oppression that divide us. Becoming an Ally looks for paths to justice and lays out guidelines for becoming allies of oppressed peoples when we are in the privileged role. A new chapter in this third edition offers a greatly expanded discussion of effective approaches to educating allies, which is meant for teachers of adults, particularly those who teach about diversity, equity and anti-oppression. In this chapter, Bishop examines the ways in which Western culture prevents us from recognizing our roles as members of privileged groups and explores how to challenge this with participatory exercises and group discussion.

The author has known great love, great joy, heartbreak and more than her share of life's sorrows. Book excerpt: While an abundance of literature covers the right of states to defend themselves against external aggression, this is the first book dedicated to the right to personal self-defense in international law. Drawing on his extensive experience as a human rights practitioner and scholar, Dr. Hessbruegge sets out in careful detail the strict requirements that human rights impose on defensive force by law enforcement authorities, especially police killings in self-defense. The book also discusses the exceptional application of the right to personal self-defense in military-led operations, notably to contain violent civilians who do not directly participate in hostilities. Human rights also establish parameters on how broad or narrow the laws can be drawn on self-defense between private persons. Setting out the prevailing international standards, the book critically examines the ongoing trend to excessively broaden self-defense laws. It also refutes the claim that there is a human right to possess firearms for self-defense purposes. In extraordinary circumstances, the right to personal self-defence sharpens human rights and allows people to defend themselves against the state. Here the author establishes that international law gives individuals the right to forcibly resist human rights violations that pose a serious risk of significant and irreparable harm. At the same time, he calls into question prevailing state practice, which fails to recognize any collective right to organized armed resistance even when it constitutes the last resort to defend against genocide or other mass atrocities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violence in families and intimate relationships affects a significant proportion of the population—from very young children to the elderly—with far-reaching and often devastating consequences. Cruel but Not Unusual draws on the expertise of scholars and practitioners to present readers with the latest research and thinking about the history, conditions, and impact of violence in these contexts. For this new edition, chapters have been updated to reflect changes in data and legislation. New chapters include an examination of trauma from a neurobiological perspective; a critical analysis of the “gender symmetry debate,” a debate that questions the gendered nature of intimate violence; and an essay on the history and evolution of the women’s movement dedicated to addressing violence against women, which advances theoretical developments that remind readers of the breadth of inclusivity that should be at the heart of working in this field.
