Download or read book A Biographical History of Greene County, Pennsylvania written by Samuel Penniman Bates and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1975 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This useful offprint contains biographical sketches of approximately 800 southwestern Pennsylvania residents. The sketches are of Greene County families predominantly, though unavoidably some sketches concern families of Washington or Fayette County provenance. The biographies are conveniently arranged in alphabetical order within township and borough and generally treat subjects who were born in the early nineteenth century, with reference to immediate forebears of the late eighteenth century. Typical sketches mention the date and place of birth and marriage of the biographee; the name of his wife and the names of his children; names with dates and places of birth of his parents and often grandparents; sometimes the name of the first ancestor in America; and details of religion, education, military service, occupation, home, and residence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1861, John Caldwell Calhoun Sanders, a 21-year-old cadet at the University of Alabama, helped organize a company of the 11th Alabama Volunteer Infantry. Hailing primarily from Greene County, the 109 men of Company C, "The Confederate Guards," signed on for the duration of the war and made Sanders their first captain. They would fight in every major battle in the Eastern Theater, under Robert E. Lee. Leading from the front, Sanders was wounded four times during the war yet rose rapidly through the ranks, becoming one of the South's "boy generals" at 24. By Appomattox, Sanders was dead and the remaining 20 men of Company C surrendered with what was left of the once formidable Army of Northern Virginia. This is their story.

Book excerpt: November 4, 1791, was a black day in American history. General Arthur St. Clair’s army had been ambushed by Native Americans in what is now western Ohio. In just three hours, St. Clair’s force sustained the greatest loss ever inflicted on the United States Army by Native Americans—a total nearly three times larger than what incurred in the more famous Custer fight of 1876. It was the greatest proportional loss by any American army in the nation’s history. By the time this fighting ended, over six hundred corpses littered an area of about three and one half football fields laid end to end. Still more bodies were strewn along the primitive road used by hundreds of survivors as they ran for their lives with Native Americans in hot pursuit. It was a disaster of cataclysmic proportions for George Washington’s first administration, which had been in office for only two years.

Download or read book Waynesburg written by Glenn J. R. T. Toothman III and Candice L. Buchanan and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waynesburg was founded in 1796 as the county seat of the newly formed Greene County, Pennsylvania. The state's General Assembly approved its formation after a petition was submitted by the citizens of this southwesternmost corner of the state. The people desired a more convenient location to transact their legal affairs, not wanting to ride the rugged roads north 30 miles to the county and town of Washington. The new county and its capital were named in honor of soldiers who helped General Washington to win the Revolutionary War, Nathaniel Greene and Mad Anthony Wayne, respectively. Waynesburg travels back to the early days of the area's growing years, documenting the evolution of High Street from the time of dirt roads to brick pavers and revisiting the Downey House and its tragic fire, the men of Company K, the Waynesburg Brewery, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument as it was built, the Hookstown Cemetery, the Courthouse Square, the Waynesburg College campus, and other icons of local history.

Download or read book States at War, Volume 3 written by Richard F. Miller and published by University Press of New England. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many Civil War reference books exist, there is no single compendium that contains important details about the combatant states (and territories) that Civil War researchers can readily access for their work. People looking for information about the organizations, activities, economies, demographics, and prominent personalities of Civil War states and state governments must assemble data from a variety of sources, with many key sources remaining unavailable online. This volume provides a crucial reference book for Civil War scholars and historians, professional or amateur, seeking information about Pennsylvania during the war. Its principal sources include the Official Records, state adjutant general reports, legislative journals, state and federal legislation, executive speeches and proclamations on the federal and state levels, and the general and special orders issued by the military authorities of both governments, North and South. Designed and organized for easy use, this book can be read in two ways: by individual state, with each chapter offering a stand-alone history of an individual state's war years; or across states, comparing reactions to the same event or solutions to the same problems.

Book Synopsis More Than Luck by : James S. Griffin
Download or read book More Than Luck written by James S. Griffin and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-06-15 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If someone was to ask me what comes to mind when I think about Jim, Id say he didn't let life slide away. Booth Gardner, governor, State of Washington James S. Griffin, the grandson of pioneer Washington state families, recounts his life story for his grandchildren and generations to come. Beginning with his first memory as a four-year-old, his memoir blends tales of his own life with descriptions historical events and the role his families and distant relatives played in the early years of the city of Tacoma, as well as the founding of Everett, Washington. He also details their participation in a terrifying confrontation, often referred to as the Everett massacre, prior to Washington statehood. More than Luck is a humorous yet tragic memoir that recounts a number of remarkable, life-threatening encounters. He heard these stories from his relatives and also by listening to bedtime stories about kin who came west to the Washington Territory in the late nineteen century to homestead to become lumber barons, mayors, judges, legislatures and entrepreneurs. Their stories and their legacy helped shape Jim Griffins character and the direction his life has taken.
