Book Synopsis Mozart and the Mediation of Childhood by : Adeline Mueller
Download or read book Mozart and the Mediation of Childhood written by Adeline Mueller and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s precocity is so familiar as to be taken for granted. In scholarship and popular culture, Mozart the Wunderkind is often seen as belonging to a category of childhood all by himself. But treating the young composer as an anomaly risks minimizing his impact. In this book, Adeline Mueller examines how Mozart shaped the social and cultural reevaluation of childhood during the Austrian Enlightenment. Whether in a juvenile sonata printed with his age on the title page, a concerto for a father and daughter, a lullaby, a musical dice game, or a mass for the consecration of an orphanage church, Mozart’s music and persona transformed attitudes toward children’s agency, intellectual capacity, relationships with family and friends, political and economic value, work, school, and leisure time. Thousands of children across the Habsburg Monarchy were affected by the Salzburg prodigy and the idea he embodied: that childhood itself could be packaged, consumed, deployed, “performed”—in short, mediated—through music. This book builds upon a new understanding of the history of childhood as dynamic and reciprocal, rather than a mere projection or fantasy—as something mediated not just through texts, images, and objects but also through actions. Drawing on a range of evidence, from children’s periodicals to Habsburg court edicts and spurious Mozart prints, Mueller shows that while we need the history of childhood to help us understand Mozart, we also need Mozart to help us understand the history of childhood.

Book Synopsis PERGOLESI IN THE PENTAGON by : John S. Bowman
Download or read book PERGOLESI IN THE PENTAGON written by John S. Bowman and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drafted into the US Army in 1954, John S. Bowman was assigned to Frankfurt, Germany, where with other young Americans he produced a comic opera by the 18th-century Italian composer, Pergolesi. Its success led the Army's Special Services to sponsor their company's tour around US bases, and then to two more productions - Mozart's Bastien und Bastienne and Bach's Coffee Cantata--and also to US Information Agency-sponsored performances before German audiences. Working on his memoir to recapture those adventures and to convey what millions of Americans had experienced while serving in West Germany (1945-1990), Bowman came to realize that he had been participating in the so-called cultural Cold War, so he placed his personal story into the context of the astounding amount of US government sponsored cultural activities aimed at thwarting the appeal of Soviet Communism in Europe Not intended as an expose, it is simply the most complete account of the incredible and sometimes hilarious "arsenal" of cultural weaponry deployed in the Cold War - an account that almost all Americans will find both amusing and astonishing.

Book Synopsis Haydn, Mozart, and the Viennese School, 1740-1780 by : Daniel Heartz
Download or read book Haydn, Mozart, and the Viennese School, 1740-1780 written by Daniel Heartz and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 1995 with total page 844 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have long tried to place the music of Haydn and Mozart in the lineage of German Lutheran music. In this book, Daniel Heartz shows that the first Viennese school grew from a Catholic inheritance in Italian music and from local tradition, with an admixture of French currents. The generation of composers led by Haydn no longer trained in Italy. By the time young Mozart joined the ranks of the Viennese school, its accomplishments towered above all others of the time. The author's approach can be compared to viewing a majestic mountain range in its totality: the highest peaks take on even greater majesty when seen in their natural context of foothills and lesser peaks. This is how Haydn and Mozart were viewed by their contemporaries, whose world of perception Heartz recreates, using, among other things, the visual art of the period. His focus is on music as a part of cultural history at a particular time and place. Stylistic terms and a priori periods matter less to him than the common denominators of geography, culture, and political history. Book jacket.
Book Synopsis The Opera Manual by : Nicholas Ivor Martin
Download or read book The Opera Manual written by Nicholas Ivor Martin and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You are getting ready for a performance of Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore and you have a few questions. How many clarinets are in the orchestra? How many orchestra members appear onstage? How many different sets are there? How long does the opera typically run? What are the key arias? Are any special effects or ballet choreography required? Who owns the rights? Where was it premiered? What are the leading and supporting roles? The Opera Manual is the only single source for the answers to these and other important questions. It is the ultimate companion for opera lovers, professionals, scholars, and teachers, featuring comprehensive information about, and plot summaries for, more than 550 operas—including every opera that is likely to be performed today, from standard to rediscovered contemporary works. The book is invaluable, especially for opera professionals, who will find everything they need for choosing and staging operas. But it is also a treasure for listeners. Similar reference books commonly skip over scenes and supporting characters in their plot summaries, lacking even the most basic facts about staging, orchestral, and vocal requirements. The Opera Manual, based on the actual scores of the works discussed, is the only exhaustive, up-to-date opera companion—a “recipe book” that will enable its readers to explore those operas they know and discover new ones to sample and enjoy.

The text is well illustrated with pictures and music examples and a full discography lists the available recordings of the opera.
