Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breaking Through is about much more than a single kata. Colin Wee describes his four-decade journey in the martial arts, during which he came to recognize common training deficiencies in traditional hard-style striking arts such as Karate and Taekwondo. His ingenious, multi-faceted solution, dubbed the JDK Method, utilizes the strengths of kata to teach key dynamic combat skills and concepts forgotten and overlooked in modern training. Breaking Through is a case study of the JDK Method as applied to Bassai Dai—a pattern trained across many Karate and Taekwondo styles. In Breaking Through: The Secrets of Bassai Dai Kata, Colin plumbs the depths of Bassai Dai, having returned to it for inspiration time and again to deconstruct it and extract its most valuable lessons. The twelve applications presented herein delve beyond simplistic bunkai and traditional step-sparring. The lessons taught through Bassai Dai—which Master Wee and his students have relentlessly studied, tested and trained—are an effective series of principles and defenses against the most common and frequent attacks one is likely to face. When instructors and students link the applications from Breaking Through to how Colin and his students got there—the logic of why the applications work and how the applications address a dynamic combat situation—they learn to fill in the gaps left by traditional training. This is where the magic of the book truly happens. It is truly the book's subject. Once readers establish the link with the applications and the methodology, they can apply this knowledge to any other form in any other system, and it instantly levels up their understanding of how traditional training can be put to work. Published at a time when many have foregone the practice of patterns, claiming they are outdated and of little use to modern students, Colin unlocks advanced lessons encrypted in Bassai Dai kata and by this demonstrates how to universally apply the JDK Method to patterns in any style of martial art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates a kata named "Bassai Dai" by three methods. Front Section: Sequential pictures demonstrate the views in front of the kata performer: You can see stance, the name of stance, and the direction of movement. 4 Angle Section: Sequential pictures taken from four different angles around the kata performer: You can see the detail of each movement of the kata. Count Section: List of count (static) pictures. You can use this section when you do review for the kata. Traditionally, mastering karate kata took years of training and hard practice. Since the level of each lesson based on students' experience and belt color in most of the karate dojo, advanced kata could not be taught until they reached the advanced level. If students were interested in specific advanced level kata, they had to seek supplemental materials for self-learning. However, karate books in stores don't show us any detailed information because of its lack of illustration. Therefore, I published this book to support motivated self-taught karate students. The pictures in this book are taken from four views and all pictures are timely sequenced. Therefore, it should be easy to follow and learn accurate kata without going to dojo. Learning karate is like rubbing a magic lamp and conjuring the Genie. The karate Genie granted me much happiness through the benefits of health, youth, friends, physical security, self-confidence, income, and more. If I haven't had an opportunity of holding the lamp (means if I hadn't learned karate), I might not have any of these treasures and I might have had a very lonely insecure life. Now it is your turn to hold the magic lamp. You may be able to master kata to be a gold medal champion and keep your physical and mental health or manage your weight. Whatever is your purpose of learning kata (and karate, ) set your goal high and proceed to read this book. When you accomplish your goal, you will feel like that Genie really came from the invisible magic lamp and to fulfill your dream. I hope karate enriches the quality of your life.

The different kata applications shown in this book are possible defense solutions, which will supplement or partially reinforce the existing knowledge of the reader. However, they are not the only way to interpret the kata. The karateka, who wishes to gain more knowledge, will enrich his existing knowledge on the topic of Bunkai. - At-a-glance overview of all kata - Supplementary explanations of difficult sections of kata - Explanations of Japanese terms through graphics - Additional detail drawings for difficult applications - Concise drawings with all details From the contents: "... The evolution of Karate from martial arts to a legitimate sports discipline has led to its worldwide practice and acceptance. At the same time, karate has been made somewhat "safer" by this development. The classic discipline which, to an extent, served as a survival technique, has now adapted to the new generations and their communities. However, much of the original information of classical karate was preserved in the kata. The discussion of their various applications gives us the opportunity to gain insights that will enrich our karate-dô. ..."

The manual shows clear diagrams and deliberately avoids too many details. It is intended as a reference for the karateka to look up forgotten kata sequences and techniques. Occasionally, one or the other question comes up during training: • When is the Kiai required? • Is the kick performed Jôdan or Chûdan? • Is the Sanbon principle applicable for the combination? • Fast or slow execution of moves? The manual answers all of those questions quickly by providing easy-to-understand diagrams for immediate application during training. Note the special feature concerning Ten no Kata: The kata developed by Funakoshi is illustrated with clear diagrams and is therefore easy to understand.

Book excerpt: Linking the time when karate was a strictly Okinawan art of self-defense shrouded in the deepest secrecy and the present day, when it has become a martial art practiced throughout the world, is Gichin Funakoshi, the "Father of Karate-do." Out of modesty, he was reluctant to write this autobiography and did not do so until he was nearly ninety years of age. Trained in the Confucian classics, he was a schoolteacher early in life, but after decades of study under the foremost masters, he gave up his livelihood to devote the rest of his life to the propagation of the Way of Karate. Under his guidance, techniques and nomenclature were refined and modernized, the spiritual essence was brought to the fore, and karate evolved into a true martial art. Various forms of empty-hand techniques have been practiced in Okinawa for centuries, but due to the lack of historical records, fancy often masquerades as fact. In telling of his own famous teachers--and not only of their mastery of technique but of the way they acted in critical situations--the author reveals what true karate is. The stories he tells about himself are no less instructive: his determination to continue the art, after having started it to improve his health; his perseverance in the face of difficulties, even of poverty; his strict observance of the way of life of the samurai; and the spirit of self-reliance that he carried into an old age kept healthy by his practice of Karate-do.
