Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2006, about 69 million U.S. households had pets, giving homes to around 73.9 million dogs, 90.5 million cats, and 16.6 million birds, and spending more than 38 billion dollars on companion animals. As never before in history, our pets are truly members of the family. But the notion of “companion species”—knotted from human beings, animals and other organisms, landscapes, and technologies—includes much more than “companion animals.” In When Species Meet, Donna J. Haraway digs into this larger phenomenon to contemplate the interactions of humans with many kinds of critters, especially with those called domestic. At the heart of the book are her experiences in agility training with her dogs Cayenne and Roland, but Haraway’s vision here also encompasses wolves, chickens, cats, baboons, sheep, microorganisms, and whales wearing video cameras. From designer pets to lab animals to trained therapy dogs, she deftly explores philosophical, cultural, and biological aspects of animal–human encounters. In this deeply personal yet intellectually groundbreaking work, Haraway develops the idea of companion species, those who meet and break bread together but not without some indigestion. “A great deal is at stake in such meetings,” she writes, “and outcomes are not guaranteed. There is no assured happy or unhappy ending-socially, ecologically, or scientifically. There is only the chance for getting on together with some grace.” Ultimately, she finds that respect, curiosity, and knowledge spring from animal–human associations and work powerfully against ideas about human exceptionalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping survey of the work of celebrated bon vivant Federico Forquet--whose decades-long design career has embraced couture fashion, elegant interiors, and imaginative gardens, reflecting both the best of Italian style and the dolce vita era of Rome. Through his long and crowded life, polyglot designer Federico Forquet has been by turns a couturier who learned his craft at Balenciaga's side and whose creations for his eponymous house clothed the best-dressed women of the day; a decorator of interiors of singular style and charm; a discriminating collector of rare and beautiful objects, furnishings, and pictures; and a creator of magical gardens. For the first time, the many worlds of this creative visionary are brought together in a richly illustrated celebration of style: from imagery of his lavish haute-couture gowns featured in 1960s and '70s Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and other fashionable publications and worn by trendsetters such as Marella Agnelli, Sophia Loren, and Diana Vreeland to picturesque scenes of verdant Tuscan gardens and opulent, old-world Roman villas and palazzos decorated by Forquet. Accompanied by insightful texts from the design world's authoritative voices, this inspiring and utterly enchanting tome will appeal to readers fascinated by fashion, social history, gardens, interior design, and Italian style.

Book excerpt: A deluxe paperback reissue of British actor (comedian, musician, and writer) Hugh Laurie’s acclaimed spy romp—starring Thomas Lang, a hapless ex-soldier who is drawn into the center of a dangerous plot involving international terrorists, arms dealing, and CIA spooks. Featuring an introduction by Hugh Laurie, and a foreword by Stephen Fry! Retired Army officer Thomas Lang would love nothing more than to live out the rest of his existence drinking whiskey and riding motorcycles, and is content to make ends meet with mercenary jobs—just never murder. Not even when he’s offered a fortune to assassinate American businessman Alexander Woolf. Lang opts to warn the target instead. But Lang’s good deed does not go unpunished. When he finds not Woolf, but Woolf’s alluring daughter, Sarah, and another less scrupulous mercenary closing in, Lang becomes entangled in an international conspiracy that lands him in the sights of both the Ministry of Defence and the CIA. Lang takes on rogue CIA agents, aspiring terrorists, and high-tech arms dealers to prevent an international bloodbath—and save the femme fatale he’s falling in love with. Robert Ludlum by way of—well, Hugh Laurie, THE GUN SELLER is a whizz-bang novel of suspense, espionage, and humor, perfect for crime fiction and comedy fans alike.

Book excerpt: An emotional tale of identity, sexuality and suicide derived from personal experience about three teenage boys who struggle to come to terms with their homosexuality in a small Western Australian town. On the surface, nerd Zeke, punk Charlie and footy wannabe Hammer look like they have nothing in common. But scratch that surface and you'd find three boys in the throes of coming to terms with their homosexuality in a town where it is invisible. Invisible Boys is a raw, confronting YA novel that explores the complexities and trauma of rural gay identity with painful honesty, devastating consequences and, ultimately, hope.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dawn Sylvia-Stasiewicz is a very special trainer. She knows dogs instinctively, and, drawing on lessons she learned from raising three children, she uses the power of positive reinforcement and bonding to train dogs to be joyful, obedient, and devoted members of a family. Dog lovers throughout the Washington, DC, area know her: She trained each of the late Senator Ted Kennedy’s dogs, and when the Obama family were deciding on a puppy— and could have chosen any trainer in the world to work with—it was Ms Sylvia-Stasiewicz who trained Bo. In TheLove That Dog Training Program, a lively, accessible, authoritative book, she shares her invaluable and proven program. Her method is based on positive reinforcement. She believes in trust and treats, not choke collars; in bonding, not squeezing or hitting. Her dogs are happy and self-confident, spirited yet very well-behaved. The basic program is five weeks, it takes only 15 or 20 minutes a day, and it works for both puppies and dogs, including retraining a dog with bad habits. Illustrated with step-by-step photographs, The Love That Dog Training Program covers hand-feeding. Crate training and potty training. Simple commands—sit, stay, come here—as well as more complex goals, such as bite inhibition and water safety. It shows how to avoid or correct common behavioral problems including jumping, barking, noise phobias, hiding, and more. Then: how to make your dog comfortable in the world—a dog that travels well, knows how to behave in a dog park or vet’s office, is comfortable around strangers, and more. As the author points out, dog training never ends, it just gets easier—and even more rewarding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have long admired the mythopoetic tradition in curriculum studies. That admiration followed from my experience as a high-school teacher of English in a wealthy suburb of New York City at the end of the 1960s. A “dream” job—I taught four classes of 15–20 students during a nine-period day—in a “dream” suburb (where I could afford to reside only by taking a room in a retired teacher’s house), many of these often Ivy-League-bound students had everything but meaningful lives. This middle-class, Midwestern young teacher was flabbergasted. In one sense, my academic life has been devoted to understanding that searing experience. Matters of meaning seemed paramount in the curriculum field to which Paul Klohr introduced me at Ohio State. Klohr assigned me the work of curriculum theorists such as James B. Macdonald. Like Timothy Leonard (who also studied with Klohr at Ohio State) and Peter Willis, Macdonald (1995) understood that school reform was part of a broader cultural and political crisis in which meaning is but one casualty. In the mythopoetic tradition in curriculum studies, scholars labor to understand this crisis and the conditions for the reconstruction of me- ing in our time, in our schools.
