Book excerpt: Dry sulfurization processes offer the significant advantages of low capital and low operating costs when compared to wet desulfurization. They hold great potential for the economical reduction of sulfur emissions from power utilities that use high-sulfur coal. Dry Scrubbing Technologies for Flue Gas Desulfurization represents a body of research that was sponsored by the State of Ohio's Coal Development Office for the development of technologies that use coal in an economic, environmentally-sound manner. One of the project's major goals was the development of dry, calcium-based sorption processes for removing sulfur dioxide from the combustion gases produced by high-sulfur coal. Dry Scrubbing Technologies for Flue Gas Desulfurization highlights a number of fundamental research findings that have had a significant and lasting impact in terms of scientific understanding. For example, the experimental investigation of the upper-furnace sulfur capture obtained time-resolved kinetic data in less than 100 millisecond time-scales for the first time ever, thereby revealing the true nature of the ultra-fast and overlapping phenomena. This was accomplished through the development of a unique entrained flow reactor system. The authors also identify a number of important areas for future research, including reaction mechanisms, sorbent material, transport effects, modeling, and process development. Dry Scrubbing Technologies for Flue Gas Desulfurization will appeal to both chemical and environmental engineers who examine different ways touse coal in a more environmentally benign manner. It will make an essential reference for air pollution control researchers from coal, lime, cement, and utility industries; for government policy-makers and environmental regulatory agencies; and for those who teach graduate courses in environmental issues, pollution control technologies, and environmental policy.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this project is to study the fundamental nature of the sorbent reactivity and reaction kinetics in the medium temperature range from 600°F to 1200°F available in the convective pass of a boiler upstream of the economizer, where dry sorbents are injected to remove SO2 from the flue gas. Research focus is on the fundamental mechanisms of sorbent-flue gas interaction under economizer and hot baghouse conditions utilizing the experimental setup and the results of the first three years of research. During the fourth year, the interference of carbonation reaction to sulfation reaction was studied as well as the concentration dependency of the sulfation reaction. The data to date showed that the carbonation did not interfere the sulfation reaction rate for reactions taking place less than 1 second. However, there was significant decrease in carbonation conversion when the sulfation reaction took place simultaneously. The levels of SO2 concentration had negligible effects on reaction rates when the concentration was maintained above 3000 ppM. An n-th order deactivation kinetic model was also developed during the fourth year to model the kinetics of various reactions. This model is particularly useful for the dry sorbent reactions, since the apparent rate constants rapidly decrease during the first 1 second of exposure to various gaseous reactants.

The effectiveness of these treatments vary greatly, depending the types and levels of the materials, as well as the size of the facility. Profiles in Flue Gas Desulfurization will help engineers and managers identify the technologies that best fit their plant and/or processes. It’s a quick and easy reference to all “tail-end” SO2 control processes currently in commercial use or “on the brink,” providing an effective “snapshot” of where this technology stands in industry today. The technologies are divided into waste producing processes, where the end product is a “clean waste,” and byproduct processes, where the end product has market value. Each technology profile includes a schematic depicting its major equipment components and arrangement, laid out side-by-side with descriptive text on how the process works, where and how it is currently being utilized, its operational requirements, advantages and limitations for typical applications, and a brief list of principal suppliers.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study investigates the amount, distribution, variation and fate of trace elements in FGD by-product. Dry FGD by-product including lime spray dryer (LSD) ash have possible uses in agricultural and construction applications. However, the variability in the chemical properties, especially levels of trace elements, of LSD ash is a concern due to the possible release to the environment. Little variability over different time periods (e.g., daily to yearly) and little variability between samples collected from different particle collection hoppers were observed. Trace elements including As, Se, and Hg in LSD ash and in the leachate did not surpass limits for land application (EPA 503 Rule) or RCRA. Further study of LSD ash samples was conducted to examine the distribution of trace elements in different fractions. The results show that the concentration of As was consistently greater in the calcium-enriched fraction, while the Hg concentration was significant in all fractions. Specific surface area was found to be a factor controlling the levels of mercury in LSD ash fractions. Results suggest that As and Hg are stable in LSD ash due to high pH and significant amounts of Ca. However, when LSD is disposed in a landfill, dissolution of Ca may lower the pH and calcium concentration in the leachate which may facilitate the release of As and Hg. The study of trace elements in LSD ash was used as a base-line for investigating trace elements in dry FGD by-product collected from the Ohio State Carbonation and Ash Reactivation (OSCAR) process. The OSCAR process is a pilot-plant of a new dry FGD system used on a slip stream of flue gas from the McCracken Power Plant. Results suggest that OSCAR sorbents are effective for capturing trace elements, and the OSCAR cyclone samples can be beneficially reused.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dry regenerative sorption processes have recently attracted increasing attention in flue gas desulfurization (FGD) because of their several advantages over the conventional wet-scrubbing processes. Dry sorbents are usually made by coating a transition or alkaline earth metal precursor on the surface of a porous support. Major disadvantages of these sorbents prepared by the conventional methods include relatively poor attrition resistance and low SO2 sorption capacity. The physical and especially chemical attrition (associated with the sulphation-oxidation-reduction cycles in the process) deteriorates the performance of the sorbents. The low SO2 sorption capacity is primarily due to the small surface area of the support. Materials with a high surface area are not used as the supports for FGD sorbents because these materials usually are not thermally stable at high temperatures. In the past year, the research supported by Ohio Coal Development Office was focused on synthesis and properties of sol-gel derived alumina and zeolite sorbents with improved properties for FGD. The sol-gel derived alumina has large surface area, mesopore size and excellent mechanical strength. Some alumina-free zeolites not only posses the basic properties required as a sorbent for FGD (hydrophobicity, thermal and chemical stability, mechanical strength) but also have extremely large surface area and selective surface chemistry. The major objectives of this research program were to synthesize the sol-gel derived sorbents and to explore the use of the zeolites either directly as adsorbents or as sorbent support for FGD. The research was aimed at developing novel FGD sorbents possessing better sorption equilibrium and kinetic properties and improved physical and chemical attrition resistance.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this project is on furnace sorbent injection technology using dry, calcium-based sorbents for flue gas desulfurization. The goal is to provide fundamental research kinetics and the effects of sorbent properties, aimed at improving SO2 removal and increasing sorbent utilization in a cost-effective fashion. The main focus of the third year work has been to obtain fundamental kinetic data for calcination, sintering and sulfation of calcium hydroxide sorbent. The results, their interpretation, and discussions are the primary focus of this report. Other major portions of this year's work covered in the report include the additions and modifications made to the experimental system, and preliminary results of the studies with modified Ca(OH)2. Most of the reactor system and the analytical and measurement techniques were developed in the second year and formed the necessary framework for realizing the project goal. A few design and experimental constraints necessitated modifications and additions which were made in the beginning of this year. A continuous micro-feeder was built in order to feed very small quantities of sorbent, which is essential to maintain differential conditions with respect to SO2 during sulfation experiments. The particle collection probe was modified with an insulating ceramic cover and cap, in order to reduce its cooling effect and achieve better isothermality within the reactor. A cascade cyclone sampler was added to replace the impactor because the particle loading capacity of the impactor was not sufficient to hold enough powder required for post-reaction analyses.
