Book Synopsis Form and Fancy by : Joan S. Skinner

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1916, at an unpropitious time, Thomas Wallis founded a new practice, Wallis, Gilbert & Partners, primarily to collaborate with an American company in the design of factories to be constructed of reinforced concrete. Up to this time, the designing of factories was not popular among architects and many manufacturers regarded the employment of an architect as a wanton extravagance. Wallis's move could in this light be seen as a reckless gamble, but the subsequent achievements of him and his partners suggest that his choice had been well considered. They became prolific designers of factories and some of the best known inter-war industrial buildings – Firestone, Hoover, The Gramophone Company, Glaxo Laboratories to name only a few – were their work. Skinner looks first at the biographical background of Wallis, at the history and organization of the partnership he founded, and at the many factors that contributed to its reputation in the inter-war years. She then offers a perspective on architectural thought and activity in that period, and of the attitudes and influences on factory design. Designs by the partnership for over one hundred factories and factory buildings have been discovered and, at the core of the book is a third chapter which analyses and assesses them under four headings: the early "daylight/masonry" style; the "fancy" factories of the mid-term years of 1927–35; the more sculptural and geometrical "British modern" later works up to 1939; and designs, including overseas commissions, that do not easily fit within the three style groups. Skinner concludes with an evaluation of the philosophy of Wallis, Gilbert & Partners, which was to contribute through the architectural design of factories to the successful pursuit of business by the companies that commissioned them. Although factories have played an influential role in society for more than two centuries, their design has rarely caught the imagination of architectural historians. Their neglect of the field is now being rectified to some extent and this book will contribute to the further stimulation of interest in the architectural history of factories.

Book excerpt: A Hands-On Approach to Electrical Design Electrical Design of Commercial and Industrial Buildings teaches students the critical components of electrical design through an integrated approach that combines fundamental theory with hands-on practice. By taking an applied-learning approach to instruction, this text explains electrical principles, design criteria, codes, and other key elements of the design process, then guides students through each step as they create their own electrical design plans. A companion Student Resource CD-ROM accompanies the printed textbook with sample plans - accompanied by example equipment lists, lighting fixture schedules, and calculation templates - provides students with a comprehensive framework for experiential learning. As an integrated learning tool, Electrical Design of Commercial and Industrial Buildings is both an essential teaching guide for electrical design instructors and an enduring reference book for students and professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Rust Belt to Silicon Valley, the intersection between architecture and industry has provided a rich and evolving source for historians of architecture. In a historical context, industrial architecture evokes the smoking factories of the nineteenth century or Fordist production complexes of the twentieth century. This book documents the changing nature of industrial building and planning from the end of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the twenty-first century. Drawing on research from the United States, Europe and Australia, this collection of essays highlights key moments in industrial architecture and planning representative of the wider paradigms in the field. Areas of analysis include industrial production, factories, hydroelectricity, aerospace, logistics, finance, scientific research and mining. The selected case studies serve to highlight architectural and planning innovations in industry and their contributions to wider cultural and societal currents. This richly illustrated collection will be of interest for a wide range of built environment studies, incorporating findings from both historical and theoretical scholarship and design research.

Book excerpt: Building structures to house the logistical and manufacturing processes of industry is one of the largest and most widespread architectural assignments. The complex functional requirements are often fulfilled by typifies or modular solutions. The organization of industrial processes together with the wide range of designs and building methods are clearly and practically treated in this design atlas. A systematic section presents the typology, the technical and logistical elements of industrial building. In the subsequent section, some 70 designs are described and analysed. Special emphasis is placed on those functions and procedures that inform the design such as production, montage, storage and distribution. Jürgen Adam is Director of the Institute for Design and Construction at the University of Stuttgart. As an architect and teacher he has followed closely developments in international industrial building, as have the contributing authors, among others Gunther Henn, Klaus Daniels and Fritz Haller.
