This book was released on 1994 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of Shafarevich's introductory book on algebraic geometry focuses on schemes, complex algebraic varieties and complex manifolds. As with Volume 1 the author has revised the text and added new material, e.g. a section on real algebraic curves. Although the material is more advanced than in Volume 1 the algebraic apparatus is kept to a minimum making the book accessible to non-specialists. It can be read independently of Volume 1 and is suitable for beginning graduate students in mathematics as well as in theoretical physics.

Book Synopsis Positivity in Algebraic Geometry I by : R.K. Lazarsfeld
Download or read book Positivity in Algebraic Geometry I written by R.K. Lazarsfeld and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-08-24 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two volume work on Positivity in Algebraic Geometry contains a contemporary account of a body of work in complex algebraic geometry loosely centered around the theme of positivity. Topics in Volume I include ample line bundles and linear series on a projective variety, the classical theorems of Lefschetz and Bertini and their modern outgrowths, vanishing theorems, and local positivity. Volume II begins with a survey of positivity for vector bundles, and moves on to a systematic development of the theory of multiplier ideals and their applications. A good deal of this material has not previously appeared in book form, and substantial parts are worked out here in detail for the first time. At least a third of the book is devoted to concrete examples, applications, and pointers to further developments. Volume I is more elementary than Volume II, and, for the most part, it can be read without access to Volume II.
Book Synopsis Algebraic Geometry 2 by : Kenji Ueno
Download or read book Algebraic Geometry 2 written by Kenji Ueno and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebraic geometry is built upon two fundamental notions: schemes and sheaves. The theory of schemes was explained in Algebraic Geometry 1: From Algebraic Varieties to Schemes. In this volume, the author turns to the theory of sheaves and their cohomology. A sheaf is a way of keeping track of local information defined on a topological space, such as the local holomorphic functions on a complex manifold or the local sections of a vector bundle. To study schemes, it is useful to study the sheaves defined on them, especially the coherent and quasicoherent sheaves.
Book Synopsis Lectures on Algebraic Geometry II by : Günter Harder
Download or read book Lectures on Algebraic Geometry II written by Günter Harder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-21 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume introduces the concept of shemes, reviews some commutative algebra and introduces projective schemes. The finiteness theorem for coherent sheaves is proved, here again the techniques of homological algebra and sheaf cohomology are needed. In the last two chapters, projective curves over an arbitrary ground field are discussed, the theory of Jacobians is developed, and the existence of the Picard scheme is proved. Finally, the author gives some outlook into further developments- for instance étale cohomology- and states some fundamental theorems.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Algebraic Geometry by : Steven Dale Cutkosky
Download or read book Introduction to Algebraic Geometry written by Steven Dale Cutkosky and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a readable and accessible introductory course in algebraic geometry, with most of the fundamental classical results presented with complete proofs. An emphasis is placed on developing connections between geometric and algebraic aspects of the theory. Differences between the theory in characteristic and positive characteristic are emphasized. The basic tools of classical and modern algebraic geometry are introduced, including varieties, schemes, singularities, sheaves, sheaf cohomology, and intersection theory. Basic classical results on curves and surfaces are proved. More advanced topics such as ramification theory, Zariski's main theorem, and Bertini's theorems for general linear systems are presented, with proofs, in the final chapters. With more than 200 exercises, the book is an excellent resource for teaching and learning introductory algebraic geometry.
Book Synopsis Basic Algebraic Geometry 2 by : Igor R. Shafarevich
Download or read book Basic Algebraic Geometry 2 written by Igor R. Shafarevich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-31 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shafarevich's Basic Algebraic Geometry has been a classic and universally used introduction to the subject since its first appearance over 40 years ago. As the translator writes in a prefatory note, ``For all [advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate] students, and for the many specialists in other branches of math who need a liberal education in algebraic geometry, Shafarevich’s book is a must.'' The second volume is in two parts: Book II is a gentle cultural introduction to scheme theory, with the first aim of putting abstract algebraic varieties on a firm foundation; a second aim is to introduce Hilbert schemes and moduli spaces, that serve as parameter spaces for other geometric constructions. Book III discusses complex manifolds and their relation with algebraic varieties, Kähler geometry and Hodge theory. The final section raises an important problem in uniformising higher dimensional varieties that has been widely studied as the ``Shafarevich conjecture''. The style of Basic Algebraic Geometry 2 and its minimal prerequisites make it to a large extent independent of Basic Algebraic Geometry 1, and accessible to beginning graduate students in mathematics and in theoretical physics.

Book Synopsis The Geometry of Schemes by : David Eisenbud
Download or read book The Geometry of Schemes written by David Eisenbud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-06 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grothendieck’s beautiful theory of schemes permeates modern algebraic geometry and underlies its applications to number theory, physics, and applied mathematics. This simple account of that theory emphasizes and explains the universal geometric concepts behind the definitions. In the book, concepts are illustrated with fundamental examples, and explicit calculations show how the constructions of scheme theory are carried out in practice.

Book Synopsis Lectures on Algebraic Geometry I by : Günter Harder
Download or read book Lectures on Algebraic Geometry I written by Günter Harder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book and the following second volume is an introduction into modern algebraic geometry. In the first volume the methods of homological algebra, theory of sheaves, and sheaf cohomology are developed. These methods are indispensable for modern algebraic geometry, but they are also fundamental for other branches of mathematics and of great interest in their own. In the last chapter of volume I these concepts are applied to the theory of compact Riemann surfaces. In this chapter the author makes clear how influential the ideas of Abel, Riemann and Jacobi were and that many of the modern methods have been anticipated by them.

Book Synopsis An Undergraduate Primer in Algebraic Geometry by : Ciro Ciliberto
Download or read book An Undergraduate Primer in Algebraic Geometry written by Ciro Ciliberto and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-05 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of two parts. The first is devoted to an introduction to basic concepts in algebraic geometry: affine and projective varieties, some of their main attributes and examples. The second part is devoted to the theory of curves: local properties, affine and projective plane curves, resolution of singularities, linear equivalence of divisors and linear series, Riemann–Roch and Riemann–Hurwitz Theorems. The approach in this book is purely algebraic. The main tool is commutative algebra, from which the needed results are recalled, in most cases with proofs. The prerequisites consist of the knowledge of basics in affine and projective geometry, basic algebraic concepts regarding rings, modules, fields, linear algebra, basic notions in the theory of categories, and some elementary point–set topology. This book can be used as a textbook for an undergraduate course in algebraic geometry. The users of the book are not necessarily intended to become algebraic geometers but may be interested students or researchers who want to have a first smattering in the topic. The book contains several exercises, in which there are more examples and parts of the theory that are not fully developed in the text. Of some exercises, there are solutions at the end of each chapter.
Book Synopsis Algebraic Geometry and Arithmetic Curves by : Qing Liu
Download or read book Algebraic Geometry and Arithmetic Curves written by Qing Liu and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-06-29 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a general introduction to the theory of schemes, followed by applications to arithmetic surfaces and to the theory of reduction of algebraic curves. The first part introduces basic objects such as schemes, morphisms, base change, local properties (normality, regularity, Zariski's Main Theorem). This is followed by the more global aspect: coherent sheaves and a finiteness theorem for their cohomology groups. Then follows a chapter on sheaves of differentials, dualizing sheaves, and Grothendieck's duality theory. The first part ends with the theorem of Riemann-Roch and its application to the study of smooth projective curves over a field. Singular curves are treated through a detailed study of the Picard group. The second part starts with blowing-ups and desingularisation (embedded or not) of fibered surfaces over a Dedekind ring that leads on to intersection theory on arithmetic surfaces. Castelnuovo's criterion is proved and also the existence of the minimal regular model. This leads to the study of reduction of algebraic curves. The case of elliptic curves is studied in detail. The book concludes with the funadmental theorem of stable reduction of Deligne-Mumford. The book is essentially self-contained, including the necessary material on commutative algebra. The prerequisites are therefore few, and the book should suit a graduate student. It contains many examples and nearly 600 exercises.
Book Synopsis Algebraic Geometry over the Complex Numbers by : Donu Arapura
Download or read book Algebraic Geometry over the Complex Numbers written by Donu Arapura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-15 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a relatively fast paced graduate level introduction to complex algebraic geometry, from the basics to the frontier of the subject. It covers sheaf theory, cohomology, some Hodge theory, as well as some of the more algebraic aspects of algebraic geometry. The author frequently refers the reader if the treatment of a certain topic is readily available elsewhere but goes into considerable detail on topics for which his treatment puts a twist or a more transparent viewpoint. His cases of exploration and are chosen very carefully and deliberately. The textbook achieves its purpose of taking new students of complex algebraic geometry through this a deep yet broad introduction to a vast subject, eventually bringing them to the forefront of the topic via a non-intimidating style.
