Book excerpt: First Published in 1996. Part of a series of ‘Studies in Modern Drama’, Volume 7 This volume Studies in Modern Drama collects essays on contemporary theatre which reveal the changing face of the world, as well as challenges to the boundaries of traditional stage production. Authors examine familiar texts in new settings, discovering what editor Judy Lee Oliva calls “the effect of cultural- specific gestures, stances and the nuance of words,” so that audiences and critics are forced to recognize stereotypes and re-evaluate older critical methods. Topics range from directing gay and working-class theatre in Scotland to producing American and British drama in Holland, Belgium, and Poland. New voices in the theatre are heard, and old ones are put to new tests. What remains is the power of performance to inspire emotional and intellectual response. Writers, directors, costume designers, producers, and critics provide an uncommon range of perspectives to the changing roles of theatre in an increasingly global community.

Book excerpt: The story of 'Maw' is suitable for any reader over 8 years. It is written in the style of the 1950s when the sport of boxing and football tended to dominate the world of growing boys and some girls. Because its story theme focuses on the sport of boxing and football, some girls may not feel it to be suitable for them. Maw is born exceptionally small and enters secondary school life to face the school bully. He confronts the bully and challenges him to a boxing match. On the very start of his fourteenth year of life, Maw makes a wish upon a shooting star and from that moment, his life changes. He awakes with super human powers, but quickly learns that with all power comes a responsibility to discharge such power humanely. Later, the school loses its striker from the football team at the semi- final stage of the School League Football Cup and Maw is asked to stand in as the striker. A super story told in the adventure style of writing that was more common in the 40s and 50s.

Book excerpt: After serving two years on a life sentence, David Scott is given a new trial because of new evidence that has come out, and once he is set free, he thinks that his past is in the past. But little does he know, everyone has someone who loves them, and after he's home and trying to live his life trouble-free, there are things going on around him that he doesn't see or feel, until after one night of drinking and celebrating an employee's four-month party, plus thinking he was about to have sex with one of his many lady friends, he wakes up tied to a chair. And there standing in front of him are people he's given a job or just plain trusted since he's been home, but to have these people tell him this is his last day, his heart starts racing, and his head and stomach seem like they're fighting against each other. But his mind gets clear enough to know that because of his past actions, there would be a hit out on him once he was set free from prison. So now thinking about everything, damn, he never pays attention to his surroundings and never thinks anything like this would ever happen. To his knowledge, all has been forgotten once he was sentenced to life, but now for what he did or they thought he did, the time for payback is standing in his face and in the form of people he has been around and trusted.

Book excerpt: Harry is a homeless drunk. One night, to avoid freezing on the streets, he links up with Roland, a young Navajo drag queen. Roland takes Harry in because he is reminded how his alcoholic father died of exposure. Harry works his way into Roland's life, first out of a desire to stay in the comfortable apartment, but later out of desire for Roland. Harry quits drinking and gets a job as a janitor. Slowly, Harry and Roland build a life together. However, a secret from Harry's past haunts them. A priest's brutal beating of Roland's best friend forces Harry to confront his past. Neither the police nor private attorneys will help the beating victim fight the powerful church. Faced with remaining silent and allowing the beating to go unpunished, or risking his newfound life by confronting his past, Harry chooses the later. With Roland's help, Harry faces his own crimes and reclaims his license to practice law. So armed, he begins gathering evidence. Along the way he must battle a corrupt attorney who will do anything to protect the interests of his top paying client. But Harry perseveres, bringing the case to trial where a surprise witness links the Archbishop to the scandal. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inflationary pressures have intensified in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in 2021-2022, mainly driven by a pick-up in tradeable goods inflation. Despite this increase, inflation remained relatively contained as compared to regional comparators. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of inflation dynamics in the region, with a focus on external factors because of GCC’s high reliance on international trade. Using a Global Vector Autoregressive model with quarterly data from 1987 to 2022, we find that external factors such as the imported inflation from main trading partners, mainly driven by China, and nominal effective exchange rate (NEER) are the main drivers of inflation in the GCC region. Additionally, we find that the direct pass-through of international commodity price shocks such as oil and raw agricultural materials is somewhat limited, after controlling for trading partners’ inflation, which can be explained by the prevalence of subsidies and administered prices in the region. Overall, since external factors are the main drivers of domestic inflation in the GCC, an increased focus on diversification, promoting food security, and ensuring prudent central bank policies, including through effective liquidity management frameworks, can play a key role in managing this impact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ian was a man, a bloke; a 'blokey' sort of bloke; a man's man. He wasnt for all that settling down and commitment to one person nonsense, not him. Ian wanted to have his cake and eat it, he wanted to be free to do and go whatever and wherever he pleased; which is why he settled so easily in with the Smudgers and their life in Great Yarmouth. Smudger is the150 year old name for a photographer. It goes back to the days of the very fi rst paper negatives; where, if you were a hack, a ham fisted rank amateur who took poor care of your negatives, then the consequence would be simple they smudged. The modern use of the term Smudger suited the monkey-men down to the ground. They didnt care about their photography; Smudging was just a means to an end. It gave them the money in their pockets to buy their beer and unfettered access to a virtually endless stream of women. Young or old, big or small, good looking or just downright ugly, they didnt care, it was a numbers game for them. That was until three unsuspecting women tangled themselves in Ian's life and he in theirs. Through them he discovers the hidden depths and strengths of a woman, all women, the things he should have been taught at school; the things that should not have been be left to the vagaries of an accidental discovery. Men have so much to learn about women, if they only knew quite how much, theyd realise they really dont stand a chance.

Book excerpt: The finance sector of Western economies is too large and attracts too many of the smartest college graduates. Financialization over the past three decades has created a structure that lacks resilience and supports absurd volumes of trading. The finance sector devotes too little attention to the search for new investment opportunities and the stewardship of existing ones, and far too much to secondary-market dealing in existing assets. Regulation has contributed more to the problems than the solutions. Why? What is finance for? John Kay, with wide practical and academic experience in the world of finance, understands the operation of the financial sector better than most. He believes in good banks and effective asset managers, but good banks and effective asset managers are not what he sees. In a dazzling and revelatory tour of the financial world as it has emerged from the wreckage of the 2008 crisis, Kay does not flinch in his criticism: we do need some of the things that Citigroup and Goldman Sachs do, but we do not need Citigroup and Goldman to do them. And many of the things done by Citigroup and Goldman do not need to be done at all. The finance sector needs to be reminded of its primary purpose: to manage other people's money for the benefit of businesses and households. It is an aberration when the some of the finest mathematical and scientific minds are tasked with devising algorithms for the sole purpose of exploiting the weakness of other algorithms for computerized trading in securities. To travel further down that road leads to ruin. A Financial Times Book of the Year, 2015 An Economist Best Book of the Year, 2015 A Bloomberg Best Book of the Year, 2015

He was stopped by some older boys as he was on his way home from school. One of them demanded protection money from Billy and made it quite clear that it was pay up, or suffer the consequences! Just how are Billy and Ali going to solve this problem, without involving Billy’s parents? If he does that, he runs a considerable risk of becoming a laughingstock in his class. He can almost hear some of the other boys shouting, “Billy Barnes has to ask his mum and dad for help, just like in reception class!” The solution is as clever as it is simple and is the start of a number of exciting adventures for Billy and Ali.
