Los episodios de sequía vividos los últimos años están provocando que el agua se empiece a ver como lo que es, un recurso escaso que presenta una distribución irregular en tiempo y en espacio. Usos como la recarga de sanitarios, el riego y la limpieza de interiores y exteriores que no necesitan de una calidad de agua potable, representan un porcentaje elevado del consumo total de una vivienda. La instalación de sistemas de captación de aguas pluviales y reutilización de aguas grises, utilizados para satisfacer las necesidades de los usos anteriormente citados, puede conllevar un descenso substancial del consumo de agua potable que implica no sólo un menor coste sino también una liberación de recurso importante. La elaboración de estándares resulta complicado por la dificultad que se plantea al intentar solucionar distintas problemáticas ocurridas en lugares diversos. Este documento tiene por objetivo presentar algunas bases técnicas que podrían ser aplicadas en una ordenanza sobre el uso del agua no potable en el ámbito doméstico y municipal. Para tal fin se han realizado diversos estudios sobre el dimensionamiento de los depósitos de aguas pluviales, teniendo en cuenta diferentes escenarios, donde se ha variado la superficie de captación de las aguas pluviales, la superficie de riego y el tamaño del depósito de acumulación. En este documento también se ha discutido sobre los tratamientos aplicados actualmente para la utilización de las aguas pluviales y la reutilización de las aguas grises. La instalación de grandes depósitos de acumulación de aguas pluviales no asegura un aprovechamiento mucho mayor en comparación con otros sistemas de menor tamaño. En muchas ocasiones la reutilización de aguas grises va vinculada a la aplicación de sistemas de tratamiento intensivos, mientas que de evitar el contacto del agua con el usuario se podría realizar una reutilización directa.
