Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Esther, as the wife of Dr. Bartholomew Grieve is a contented young woman. The child she raises as her own - Beth - has no memory of her real mother who died by her own hand on the day of her daughter's birth. Beth has witnessed dreadful scenes of murder and kidnap, and the threat from her biological father, a farmer and smuggler, is ever present. It is Esther's hope that she and the child will not suffer the consequences of their past entanglements with the smugglers. But it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain this hope in the face of so many threats. An unknown lad accosts her in a lonely twitten, not quite a boy nor yet a man; he believes it to be Esther's fault his parents died, with all his siblings subsequently consigned to the poor house. He intends to make her and the child suffer as they have suffered. There is no hunger or want in the doctor's household and Esther has the goodwill of many in the town of Lewes; but an unwelcome visitor, in the shape of Dr. Grieve's elder sister, is about to bring discord into the happy home. Enid McGovern disapproves of her brother's wife and her acid tongue soon finds ways of disturbing the harmony and frightening the child Beth.In amongst Esther's fears for her own and Beth's safety she finds fulfilment as a practising midwife in caring for the many pregnant women who cannot afford to pay a physician. She finds great personal happiness in her increasing family and is more than capable of seeing off interference by some of the medical profession, particularly when one of them tries to push her out of her midwifery role - a scenario being played out all over the country as venal physicians try to take the wages that midwives can earn. Esther still dreams of establishing a small house where disadvantaged women can give birth if they have no suitable home. She often loses herself in her herbal preparations and studies the works of Nicholas Culpeper. Her own understanding of herbalism comes through generations of wise women of whom her mother was one.Esther, however, cannot escape the past and when an opportunity arrives to help destroy the smuggling industry in Sussex and Kent, she voluntarily takes part. She does not foresee the consequences and once again her life is held on a knife edge at the will of smugglers who do not realise they are harbouring their bitterest enemy. Esther is trapped as the Excise executes an audacious plan to retrieve England's stolen gold and rid the southern counties of its smugglers once and for all.

Book excerpt: As seen on PBS's American Spring LIVE, the award-winning author of Buzz and Feathers presents a natural and human history of seeds, the marvels of the plant kingdom. "The genius of Hanson's fascinating, inspiring, and entertaining book stems from the fact that it is not about how all kinds of things grow from seeds; it is about the seeds themselves." -- Mark Kurlansky, New York Times Book Review We live in a world of seeds. From our morning toast to the cotton in our clothes, they are quite literally the stuff and staff of life: supporting diets, economies, and civilizations around the globe. Just as the search for nutmeg and pepper drove the Age of Discovery, coffee beans fueled the Enlightenment and cottonseed sparked the Industrial Revolution. Seeds are fundamental objects of beauty, evolutionary wonders, and simple fascinations. Yet, despite their importance, seeds are often seen as commonplace, their extraordinary natural and human histories overlooked. Thanks to this stunning new book, they can be overlooked no more. This is a book of knowledge, adventure, and wonder, spun by an award-winning writer with both the charm of a fireside story-teller and the hard-won expertise of a field biologist. A fascinating scientific adventure, it is essential reading for anyone who loves to see a plant grow.

Book excerpt: A delightful mix of folklore and fantasy follows Little Imani as she works up the courage and confidence in herself to achieve big things. Little Imani is the smallest one in her village. The other children make fun of her and tell her she's too tiny, that she's an ant, that a meerkat might stomp her, and that she'll never amount to anything. Imani begins to believe them. At bedtime, Imani's mama tells her traditional Maasai stories about the moon goddess Olapa and Anansi the spider. They accomplished the impossible. Imani's mama tells her that she is the one who needs to believe if she wants to reach new heights. So Imani sets out to touch the moon. An unforgetable story about the power of believing in ourselves that is sure to inspire young readers to reach for their own moons.

Book excerpt: A young girl sees the world differently in this beautiful picture book celebration of math. Everyone has a passion. For some, it's music. For others, it's art. For our heroine, it's math. When she looks around the world, she sees math in all the beautiful things: the concentric circles a stone makes in a lake, the curve of a slide, the geometric shapes in the playground. Others don't understand her passion, but she doesn't mind. There are infinite ways to see the world. And through math is one of them. This book is a gorgeous ode to something vital but rarely celebrated. In the eyes of this little girl, math takes its place alongside painting, drawing and song as a way to ponder the beauty of the world.

Book excerpt: *A New York Times Editor's Choice pick *Shortlisted for the 2022 Pacific Northwest Book Awards A beloved natural historian explores how climate change is driving evolution In Hurricane Lizards and Plastic Squid, biologist Thor Hanson tells the remarkable story of how plants and animals are responding to climate change: adjusting, evolving, and sometimes dying out. Anole lizards have grown larger toe pads, to grip more tightly in frequent hurricanes. Warm waters cause the development of Humboldt squid to alter so dramatically that fishermen mistake them for different species. Brown pelicans move north, and long-spined sea urchins south, to find cooler homes. And when coral reefs sicken, they leave no territory worth fighting for, so aggressive butterfly fish transform instantly into pacifists. A story of hope, resilience, and risk, Hurricane Lizards and Plastic Squid is natural history for readers of Bernd Heinrich, Robin Wall Kimmerer, and David Haskell. It is also a reminder of how unpredictable climate change is as it interacts with the messy lattice of life.

Book excerpt: Bear got more than he bargained for when he accidentally ran into Fox. Little did he know, Bear had picked up Fox’s stolen goose egg. Soon, the egg hatches and Bear finds himself holding a confused little gosling that’s calling him “Mama.” Try as he might to convince the little goose he’s not its mother, the goose sticks around. Bear tries to show the goose that he’s not its mother by climbing, running, and swimming away, but Goose is there every step of the way, climbing, running, and swimming just as well as Bear. But, Fox is lurking the whole time, waiting to take back his “prize.” Just as Bear begins to accept Goose as his own, Fox makes his move. Will Fox get Goose, or will “Goose the Bear” make “Mama” proud? In this quirky mix-up at its finest, Katja Gehrmann tells the heartwarming and species-confused story of Goose the Bear with the help of colorful, offbeat illustrations and a narrative to match. If you want to be a bear, be a bear—even if you’re a goose. Book excerpt: As seen on PBS's American Spring LIVE, the award-winning author of The Triumph of Seeds and Feathers presents a natural and cultural history of bees: the buzzing wee beasties that make the world go round. Bees are like oxygen: ubiquitous, essential, and, for the most part, unseen. While we might overlook them, they lie at the heart of relationships that bind the human and natural worlds. In Buzz, the beloved Thor Hanson takes us on a journey that begins 125 million years ago, when a wasp first dared to feed pollen to its young. From honeybees and bumbles to lesser-known diggers, miners, leafcutters, and masons, bees have long been central to our harvests, our mythologies, and our very existence. They've given us sweetness and light, the beauty of flowers, and as much as a third of the foodstuffs we eat. And, alarmingly, they are at risk of disappearing. As informative and enchanting as the waggle dance of a honeybee, Buzz shows us why all bees are wonders to celebrate and protect. Read this book and you'll never overlook them again.
