Book Synopsis Barnstormers, Wing-Walking and Flying Circuses by : Peter C. Brown
Download or read book Barnstormers, Wing-Walking and Flying Circuses written by Peter C. Brown and published by Air World. This book was released on 2022-04-21 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While large numbers of aeroplanes had been produced In America for the war effort overseas at the Western Front, it was found that that the British, French and Germans were far ahead of them when it came to flight technology, which led to a huge surplus of aeroplanes in the United States. The government’s solution to recover some of the money was to sell the surplus stock off for as little as $200 dollars each. With no licence being required to fly a plane, the offer attracted many ex-fighter pilots as well as civilians, who developed a new American pastime known as barnstorming. Part entertainers, part thrill-seekers, the barnstormers made their way across the country as solo acts and in groups called 'Flying Circuses'. The American flier Ormer Locklear wowed the crowds by climbing out of his aeroplane and walk along the wing, and it wasn’t long before flying circuses held less appeal for spectators if it didn’t have a wing-walking act. Handstands, jumps across planes, and even the odd game of tennis were attempted by barnstormers to attract larger paying audiences. In 1936, the US Government banned wing-walking under 1,500 ft, which doomed aerial stunting, and while a few wing-walking teams operated in the 1970s, it wasn’t until barnstormer Vic Norman founded his famous AeroSuperBatics wing-walking team in the early 1980s that the sight of daredevils hand-standing and flying upside down on the wing was seen in Europe. Several teams around the world subsequently formed using aeroplanes such as the Boeing Stearman or the Curtiss 'Jenny' biplanes to wow crowds as a part of regular air displays, and their appeal has continued to rise since the 2000s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until 1947, professional ball players were paid only from opening day to season's end. Even during the season, a lot of their expenses came out of their own pockets. Even the best-paid players had trouble making ends meet. One answer to their money woes was barnstorming--tours out of season. Cities lacking their own major league teams were happy to host big-league players for such events, as well as for special exhibition games whose proceeds sometimes went to local charities. Here is a history of barnstorming and exhibition games from 1901 (when both of the two current major leagues began operating) through 1962 (when a team led by Willie Mays was unsuccessful in its attempt at a tour, signaling an end to true barnstorming). Decade by decade, it covers the teams, the games, and the players for a detailed look at how barnstorming and exhibition brought big-league baseball to the backyard ballparks of America.

Book excerpt: Air shows are high-risk activities that must be conducted with careful thought towards the general public, spectators, and flying and nonflying participants to ensure that the activity is as safe as reasonably possible. The impromptu, ad hoc, unrehearsed or unplanned must never be attempted. This book offers a holistic overview of the state of safety, including safety cultural variables, safety risk parameters, and human performance factors, in the international air show community. This book aims to close the knowledge gap on safety management in air shows. It imparts to the aviation sector and other high-risk and high-performance industries the experience and knowledge that airshow performers have gained regarding risk assessment, psychological aspects, and mindfulness techniques used for safe and effective performances. The book highlights how resilient safety culture can change the air show community's mentality to deliver safer and more spectacular air show events and promotes the culture of excellence that the air show community is wedded to. The reader will obtain a thorough understanding of safety issues in air shows. Air Show Performers: Safety, Risk Management, and Psychological Factors is a critical read for professionals within the international air show community including nonflying participants. Book Synopsis Aviation Lore in Faulkner by : Robert Harrison
Download or read book Aviation Lore in Faulkner written by Robert Harrison and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Faulkner was an aviation cadet in Canada in the closing days of WW I. He later owned his own airplane, and even put on a few air shows. When he wrote of flying, as he often did, it was with a great deal of expertise but little concern for the edification of his readers. The result is that many of the five hundred or so passages dealing with aviation in his works are all but incomprehensible to the non-pilot. This work elucidates all the aeronautical references in Faulkner s fiction and verse which might prove troublesome to the general reader. This monograph contains three main sections: An introduction to flight, designed especially for the non-technical reader and intended to provide enough background in aerodynamics and aircraft design to enable one to follow Faulkner s argument intelligently; a brief biography of Faulkner as a pilot and aviation enthusiast; and a reader s guide through the individual works in which aviation plays a part.

Book excerpt: “Enriches and complicates African American and women’s history by connecting threads of race, gender, class, and region.” —Darlene Clark Hine, John A. Hannah Professor of History, Michigan State University Winner of the Liz Carpenter Award from the Texas State Historical Association Women of all colors have shaped families, communities, institutions, and societies throughout history, but only in recent decades have their contributions been widely recognized, described, and celebrated. This book presents the first comprehensive history of Black Texas women, a previously neglected group whose 150 years of continued struggle and some successes against the oppression of racism and sexism deserve to be better known and understood. Beginning with slave and free women of color during the Texas colonial period and concluding with contemporary women who serve in the Texas legislature and the United States Congress, Ruthe Winegarten organizes her history both chronologically and topically. Her narrative sparkles with the life stories of individual women and their contributions to the work force, education, religion, the club movement, community building, politics, civil rights, and culture. The product of extensive archival and oral research and illustrated with over 200 photographs, this groundbreaking work will be equally appealing to general readers and to scholars of women’s history, black history, American studies, and Texas history. “Occasionally a book comes along that is monumental in scope, overwhelming in amount of research, and so powerful in its impact as to be categorized at once as a lasting contribution to our knowledge of humankind. Black Texas Women is one of those rare books.” —The Journal of American History
