Book excerpt: Glens Falls presents a photographic essay of a community on the Hudson River, midway between Saratoga Springs and Lake George. The book spans the years from 1860 to 1925, when Glens Falls was reaching its peak in economic, social, political, and cultural growth. Depicted in stunning images are the city's simple beginnings, the days of dirt roads traveled by horse and buggy, and its cultural emergence with opera houses, exquisite mansions, and public transportation. Clearly portrayed are the educational, religious, business, and recreational opportunities of the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Bond became the first Warrensburg settler, when he arrived in the Echo Lake area, in 1787. Shortly thereafter, Warrensburg became known as "the Bridge" because it was the location of the only bridge in the area that crossed the Schroon River. In February 1813, the town of Warrensburg was formed from part of Thurman. By the mid-1800s, A. C. Emerson and B. P. Burhans had moved to Warrensburg and begun to harness the waterpower of the Schroon River and utilize the nearby timber resource. The Emerson sawmill and Burhans's tannery and gristmill provided employment and capital to support a growing and thriving town. Other industries, such as a woolen mill and pants factory, sash and blind factory, shirt factory, and shoe peg factory, soon followed. With the dawn of the 20th century, improved transportation in the form of railroads and the automobile began bringing more people to Warren County. This trend continues today as numerous visitors summer in the Adirondacks to enjoy the clean air and water of the north country.

Book excerpt: Life in the Adirondack foothills has seldom been spectacular but folks who have lived and died in the hilly region north of the Mohawk Valley have left an heritage of folklore which has sprung up from a way of life which is peculiar to the area. Folklore from the Adirondack Foothills attempts to emphasize phases of life in the foothills. Here are yarns heard along the roads, tales of logging days on the rivers and creeks and in the sawmill hamlets, and pen-portraits of folks whose eccentricities lent a touch of color to the villages in which they once lived.
