Download or read book George Osborne written by Janan Ganesh and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-24 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ganesh's dissection of what has driven the intellectual and political revival of the Tories is forensic and incisive."- Anne McElvoy, Mail on Sunday"A lively account of the Chancellor's career ... contains a great deal of fascinating new information."- Peter Oborne, Daily Telegraph George Osborne is the most controversial Chancellor of the Exchequer since the Second World War. His austere policies have incited international debate, and his political influence over the government provokes resentment. He is also a survivor with an eye on the premiership. Having authored the most hated Budget of recent times, he now presides over a recovering economy. This is the story of Osborne's breathless ascent to power: a journey driven by luck, guile, resilience, daring and ferocious ambition. As a back-room adviser, MP and Cabinet member, he has enjoyed a starring role or front-row seat at all the Tory dramas since the fall of Thatcher and the dog days of the Major government, from the party's long years in opposition to its eventual and incomplete resurrection. Yet rarely have voters known so little about a politician with such sway over their lives and livelihoods.Fully updated to include Osborne's role in the economic recovery, his appointment of Mark Carney as Governor of the Bank of England, and his prospects as a future Prime Minister, this biography makes sense of a man who is both a personal enigma and a political machine. Based on exhaustive research and access to the innermost parts of the government, it tells the story of George Osborne and the era he has helped to shape.

Download or read book Lilla's Feast written by Frances Osborne and published by Random House. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of her life, Frances Osborne’s one-hundred-year-old great-grandmother Lilla was as elegant as ever–all fitted black lace and sparkling-white diamonds. To her great-grandchildren, Lilla was both an ally and a mysterious wonder. Her bedroom was filled with treasures from every exotic corner of the world. But she rarely mentioned the Japanese prison camps in which she spent much of World War II, or the elaborate cookbook she wrote to help her survive behind the barbed wire. Beneath its polished surface, Lilla’s life had been anything but effortless. Born in 1882 to English parents in the beautiful North China port city of Chefoo, Lilla was an identical twin. Growing up, she knew both great privilege and deprivation, love and its absence. But the one constant was a deep appreciation for the power of food and place. From the noodles of Shanghai to the chutney of British India and the roasts of England, good food and sensuous surroundings, Lilla was raised to believe, could carry one a long way toward happiness. Her story is brimming with the stuff of good fiction: distant locales, an improvident marriage, an evil mother-in-law, a dramatic suicide, and two world wars. Lilla’s remarkable cookbook, which she composed while on the brink of starvation, makes no mention of wartime rations, of rotten vegetables and donkey meat. In the world this magical food journal, now housed in the Imperial War Museum in London, everyone is warm and safe in their homes, and the pages are filled with cream puffs, butterscotch, and comforting soup. In its writing, Lilla was able to transform the darkest moments into scrumptious escape. Lilla’s Feast is a rich evocation of a bygone world, the inspiring story of an ordinary woman who tackled the challenges life threw in her path with an extraordinary determination.

Book Synopsis Uphill Against Water by : Peter Carrels
Download or read book Uphill Against Water written by Peter Carrels and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Uphill against Water, Peter Carrels examines the history of Missouri River water development projects in general and describes the struggle over one of the largest of those projects, South Dakota?s Oahe irrigation project, in detail. Opposition to the Oahe project was intense and well organized. After four years of bitter competition, an energetic and resourceful grassroots group, United Family Farmers, wrested control of the Oahe conservancy district board, a government agency that had been an ardent supporter of the irrigation project. That political triumph led to the only victory in the West by a grassroots group over the Bureau of Reclamation and the irrigation and business establishment.
Download or read book A Song written by David Turner and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a very human story that touches the hearts of many. Jim’s childhood memories are of family life in a gritty inner city suburb of Sydney, then, as pioneers in the bush. In his teens he goes to live it up in the exciting night district of Kings Cross. He meets artists of all kinds and discovers his own artistic sensibilities. After graduation from university he makes a career as an architect, retires, goes to London, and then in 1990 settles in Paris. From Paris, for the next 25 years, he discovers the world through the lens of his camera. He writes it all down. Jim’s story begins with childhood memories of his life in a gritty inner city suburb of Sydney. It was wild and exciting for a five year-old but for his asthmatic mother the toxic environment was intolerable. They move and become the pioneers in a new outer bush suburb. In teenage he finds a room in the night district of Kings Cross, mixes with artists and discovers his own sensibilities. He goes to university, graduates, and makes his career as an architect. He retires in 1989 and then takes residence in Paris. This begins a second life of travel and writing. His story is enriched by his wonderful, keenly observed descriptions of places, as exotically various as the Zen Buddhist temple he sojourned in Kyoto; Maharashtra, where he photographed traditional farm and village life; the slums of Calcutta where he nearly died; Havana, where he learned what living under communism is like; Moscow and St. Petersburg at the fall of the Soviet Union; Manhattan during the first Obama election, Istanbul, Jerusalem, Krakow, Florence, Hong Kong, and small provincial towns in France. But it is other people that interest us most. He meets with so many types, each remarkable in their own ways. His story is easy to read, not without humour, and lyrical in style.
