Book excerpt: "Barbershops are synonymous with great memories, and nostalgic by the smells and feeling of a fresh cut or shave. Barbershops of America is the product of a 7-year journey by Rob Hammer, who traveled to all 50 states of the USA, documenting the disappearing old-school barbershop and the men who were staples of their community. Photographs and stories chronicle the barbershops of old, but also capture the stark contrast that is the "next generation" of traditional barbers. These new-school barbers may look like the polar opposite of what a traditional barber would look like, yet despite the obvious difference in the way these professionals carry themselves, their purpose is consistent: to carry on the tradition that they love."--Back cover

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is noticeable that the classic BARBER SHOPS, which had a careless appearance and offered a more affordable price, ARE out of the scene. With the emergence of beauty salons OFFERING the same service but with more comfort to customers, barber shops have BEEN left behind. However, the harsh truth is: beauty salons PRIORITIZE the female audience, and the male audience takes a back seat. On the other hand, men have STOPPED just "trimming the beard" and started making DIFFERENT requests, both in size, shapes, and even colors. In addition to NEEDING services like haircut, hair washing, among others. Amidst all this, barber shops have MODERNIZED, bringing a bolder connotation and greater comfort. With all these changes, this type of BUSINESS has shown significant demand, indicating STRONG growth prospects. In other words, a GREAT OPPORTUNITY for those who like this industry and want to venture into it. Considering this, this EBOOK was written with everything you NEED to know to open a barber shop and SUCCEED in your business. Check it out.

Ring Lardner was born in Niles, Michigan in 1885. He studied engineering at the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago, but did not complete his first semester. In 1907, Lardner obtained his first job as journalist with the South Bend Times. Six years later, he published his first successful book, You Know Me Al, an epistolary novel written in the form of letters by 'Jack Keefe', a bush-league baseball player, to a friend back home. A huge hit, the book earned the appreciation of Virginia Woolf and others. Lardner went on to write such well-known short stories as 'Haircut', 'Some Like Them Cold', 'The Golden Honeymoon', 'Alibi Ike', and 'A Day with Conrad Green'.

This book was released on 2021-07-23 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overview Generally barber shops can be divided into two; a) Normal/ Traditional Barber Shops The normal barber shops offer a basic hair cutting service where the main aim is to get the hair down with little or no regard for the experience while at it. They are the most common in every town center characterized by small rooms, two or so chairs, loud music, hair on the floor and a casual (in dressing and service) barber. b) Executive Barber Shops The executive barber shops aim not only at offering a hair cut but also a superior experience while at it. Thus they lay premium emphasis on everything that is used in the process from the chairs to the towel, machines, ambience, cleanliness and all else. The executive barber shops arose from a need to serve a customer who is health conscious, with enough income, lifestyle and social exposure to make him willing to pay a premium for personalized and higher quality service. However the definition of executive barber shop is now somehow diluted. There are 'normal' barber shops which use "Executive" as a trade name but offer none of the superior services. There are others which only offer one or two premium services but still define themselves as executive; this is in comparison to the other barber shops in the location. The most common of the premium services being washing a customer's head with warm water the shave. Lastly are the barber shops which are "Executive" proper offering the whole range of premium services. Such are the focus of this report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, black-owned barber shops play a central role in African American public life. The intimacy of commercial grooming encourages both confidentiality and camaraderie, which make the barber shop an important gathering place for African American men to talk freely. But for many years preceding and even after the Civil War, black barbers endured a measure of social stigma for perpetuating inequality: though the profession offered economic mobility to black entrepreneurs, black barbers were obliged by custom to serve an exclusively white clientele. Quincy T. Mills traces the lineage from these nineteenth-century barbers to the bustling enterprises of today, demonstrating that the livelihood offered by the service economy was crucial to the development of a black commercial sphere and the barber shop as a democratic social space. Cutting Along the Color Line chronicles the cultural history of black barber shops as businesses and civic institutions. Through several generations of barbers, Mills examines the transition from slavery to freedom in the nineteenth century, the early twentieth-century expansion of black consumerism, and the challenges of professionalization, licensing laws, and competition from white barbers. He finds that the profession played a significant though complicated role in twentieth-century racial politics: while the services of shaving and grooming were instrumental in the creation of socially acceptable black masculinity, barbering permitted the financial independence to maintain public spaces that fostered civil rights politics. This sweeping, engaging history of an iconic cultural establishment shows that black entrepreneurship was intimately linked to the struggle for equality.
