Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract from Baptist Revival Fellowship We explore the Baptist Revival Fellowship’s history from its foundation in 1938. It began as a movement to promote spiritual renewal in the Baptist Union. However, it withdrew from its affiliation in 1972. It draws on denominational records, press reports, some writings of its leaders and also the fellowship archive. The movement had three phases of development, and a chapter is devoted to each of these. During its early development between 1938 and 1960, the BRF mainly emphasized personal spiritual renewal and prayer for revival. However, in the late fifties it moved into more fundamentalist territory. Between 1960 and 1966 came the charismatic renewal and the prominence of Reformed theology. This led to renewed impetus and serious engagement with contemporary Baptist debates. The final phase was between 1966 and 1971 when the BRF adopted a policy of secession from the BU. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones had significant influence from the late fifties onwards. The BRF left the BU in reaction to a Christological controversy between 1971 and 1972.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is hope. God can save your church. In this book, Thom Rainer reveals seven findings of revived churches. Through new research, he figuratively dissects hundreds of churches that were on the path toward death. But they turned around. They revitalized. They did so in the face of facts and naysayers who told them it could not be done. Today, three out of four churches are declining in our nation, and twenty percent of churches are close to death. What are the secrets of the churches who avoided this fate and experienced revival? In Anatomy of a Revived Church, Thom will show you how these churches experienced renewal. He will cover everything from “expanding the scorecard” to “dealing with toxins” to “choosing meaningful membership.” When you finish reading this book, you will have the tools to strengthen, restore, and energize your church. You can choose life for your church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elmer L. Towns is one of the most God-gifted storytellers of our time. He begins Revival Igniters with the riveting testimony of his born-again experience. As only he can tell in vivid detail, the reader is there with him in a half-built church with a few others gathered on the floor behind the pulpit. And again in a garage apartment filled with hungry-for-more believers. And finally in his bedroom where "the horrors of hell gripped me, as though I were already in flames." His passion continues throughout the book that is a compilation of exciting, personal God-moment experiences and historical revival events that shook the world. From James McGready in 1800 to William Seymour in 1906 and more recently the Jesus People revolution, Billy Graham, and Jerry Falwell, the significance of revivals in the United States and worldwide is presented in such splendid grandeur that only the Holy Spirit can be given credit for the truth shared. An added beauty of Revival Igniters is the Devotions portion of the book, which allows readers to become intimately involved in the work God is doing on earth through believers who want to ignite the world around them. For 21 days, readers can jump into a refreshing, fire-infused time with the Lord through Scripture, commentary, and prayers.

Book excerpt: Why don’t our churches today look like the church in the book of Acts? Could they? When God manifests his presence to a fellowship of believers in Christ, God’s people experience revival. That’s one way to define what revival is—when God comes to church. In Revival: When God Comes to Church, Pastor Steve Gaines analyzes how churches can look like the church of the first century. Infused with the Holy Spirit, they evangelized most of the civilized world within only three centuries. We don’t need another program, personalities, or marketing; we need his presence. The Holy Spirit is our primary draw, and when he touches people, they’re never the same.

Book excerpt: During the 1940s, in the wake of the Depression and in the midst of WWII, a small group of students at Baylor University began to pray for spiritual revival. They were not evangelists with a program, but ordinary students with a heartfelt concern for renewal in America. Beginning with a single miraculous revival in Waco, Texas, a movement began among students from other campuses and in other cities -- Houston, Fort Worth, Dallas, Memphis, Birmingham, Atlanta, even Honolulu. Riding The Wind Of God tells the remarkable story of the Youth Revival Movement. These stories, written for the first time, reflect God's power at work in surprising places in an extraordinary time.

Book excerpt: Can God stir revival by his Holy Spirit, even in our culture today? Do we really believe he can? In a day of diminished expectations, A God-Sized Vision: Revival Accounts That Stretch and Stir recounts global examples of prior revivals, beginning with the Reformation and the Great Awakenings. It continues with the Welsh and Azusa Street revivals and those that occurred simultaneously in Asia, followed by the East Africa Revival of the 1930s. More recent revivals in North America that instigated parachurch or evangelistic ministries like those of Billy Graham and the revivals in China, particularly in Henan Province over the last forty years, give further evidence of church renewal. These stories enlarge our hearts, expand our minds, and empower our witness to the power of God at work in human history. Christians with a deep evangelistic commitment who realize that there is more to church growth than field-tested techniques will expand their vision by remembering God’s vision, as it has been revealed throughout history. Hansen and Woodbridge mine these stories of renewal to suggest how to get ready for revival today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book-length study of the vital role Regular Baptists played in creating the modern Southern Baptist denomination The origins of the Southern Baptist Convention, the world's largest Protestant denomination, is most often traced back to the colorful, revivalist Separate Baptist movement that rose out of the Great Awakening in the mid-1700s. During that same period the American South was likewise home to the often-overlooked Regular Baptists, who also experienced a remarkable revitalization and growth. Regular Baptists combined a concern for orderly doctrine and church life with the ardor of George Whitefield's evangelical awakening. In Order and Ardor, Eric C. Smith examines the vital role of Regular Baptists through the life of Oliver Hart, pastor of First Baptist Church in Charleston, South Carolina, a prominent patriot during the American Revolution, and one of the most important pioneers of American Baptists and American evangelicalism. In this first book-length study of Hart's life and ministry, Smith reframes Regular Baptists as belonging to an influential revival movement that contributed significantly to creating the modern Southern Baptist denomination, challenging the widely held perception that they resisted the Great Awakening. During Hart's thirty-year service as the pastor of First Baptist Church, the Regular Baptists incorporated evangelical and revivalist values into their existing doctrine. Hart encouraged cooperative missions and education across the South, founding the Charleston Baptist Association in 1751 and collaborating with leaders of other denominations to spread evangelical revivalism. Order and Ardor analyzes the most intense, personal experience of revival in Hart's ministry—an awakening among the youths of his own congregation in 1754 through the emergence of a vibrant thirst for religious guidance and a concern for their own souls. This experience was a testimony to Hart's revival piety—the push for evangelical Calvinism. It reinforced his evangelical activism, hallmarks of the Great Awakening that appear prominently in Hart's diaries, letters, sermon manuscripts, and other remaining documents. Extensively researched and written with clarity, Order and Ardor offers an enlightened view of eighteenth-century Regular Baptists. Smith contextualizes Hart's life and development as a man of faith, revealing the patterns and priorities of his personal spirituality and pastoral ministry that identify him as a critically important evangelical revivalist leader in the colonial lower South.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Jesus ascended to heaven and sat down at the right hand of God the Father, He poured out His Holy Spirit at Pentecost. This significant historical and redemptive event was not the last time Christ poured out His Spirit in redemptive history. Mindful of these subsequent acts, Pentecostal Outpourings , presents historical research on revivals in the Reformed tradition during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Investigating the British Isles, it observes the outpourings experienced among Welsh Calvinistic Methodists, Irish Dissenters, Calvinistic English Baptists, and Scottish Presbyterians. It then moves on to evaluate the revival instincts among Presbyterians, Congregationalists, Baptists, and the Dutch Reformed in America. May the knowledge of these outpourings of the Holy Spirit help us seek God earnestly to revive His Church once again. Table of Contents: Preface - Steve Lawson I. Revival in the British Isles 1.
