Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Censorship has been an ongoing phenomenon even in "the land of the free." This examination of banned books across U.S. history examines the motivations and effects of censorship, shows us how our view of right and wrong has evolved over the years, and helps readers to understand the tremendous importance of books and films in our society. Books ranging from classics such as A Farewell to Arms, Lord of the Rings, The Catcher in the Rye, and The Color Purple as well as best-selling books such as Are You There, God? It's Me Margaret, titles in the Harry Potter series, and various books by bestselling novelist Stephen King have all been on the banned books list. What was the content that got them banned, who wanted them banned, and did the ban have the desired effect of minimizing the number of people who read the title-or did it have the opposite effect, inadvertently creating an even larger readership for the book? Silenced in the Library: Banned Books in America provides a comprehensive examination of the challenges to major books as well as the final results of these selections being deemed "unfit for public consumption." Included in its discussion are explanations of the true nature of the objections along with the motives of the authors, publishers, and major proponents of the books. Content is organized based on why the books were banned, such as sexual content, drug use, or religious objections. This approach helps readers to see trends in how people have approached the challenge of evaluating what is "proper" and shows how our societal consensus of what is acceptable has evolved over the years. Readers will come away with a fuller appreciation of the immense power of words on a page-or an eReader device-to inflame and outrage, influence opinion, incite thought, and even change the course of history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE DAY RAP WAS BANNED IN THE USA: A writer who has clairvoyant dreams uses My-faction: Myth, Facts & Fiction to tell the story of two men convicted of murder by all-white jurors. One is a rapper, who has a No. 1 song: doing his arrest, the other a Veteran who is sent to the electric chair. After submitting my story: in a PDF. format, with the assistance of my friend pastor Key, a day before the deadline, the next day or should I say, the day of the deadline: I received an Email & link, that told me I, hadn't submitted my Log line, in which could be instant disqualification, of I didn't meet the deadline. I thank God I was at home, and prepared to respond swiftly. But I had one problem, I couldn't remember what a Log line was; no wonder I forgot to add it to the list. After Google it, I remember its import ants, it's the DNA of the script, the glue that brings the characters together, it's that thing that you read before watching a movie, and it sometime is the deciding factor or pitch that wins you over. And so I realized that I had lost my Log line or failedTo copy it. I search my computer hard drive, but I found nothing. Then I realized that my laptop hard drive recovered it for me. To my surprise seeing that Logline was a sight for sore eyes. And so I made a copy and pasted it on my Tv One page, and less than a minute I was receiving a Email that said I had successfully completed my submission, alone with a copy of my submission forms. My screen play wasn't accept, but one of my characters Uncle Luke, of Banded in the USA received an award, When the Lord came to visit me that day in 'Nu vision salon: ' You can say I received a new vision when he assigned me to 'work with 'rappers' who were much younger than I am. My back ground of working with rappers, went back to the inception or acceptances of hip in Dallas, from Vanilla Ice at old city lights in the late 80th's to 2 Live Crew, freedom of speech in the 90th's. I was on Banded in the USA, and MTV commercials': Saying: In America theirs freedom of speech, but watch what you say. I did not know that I would become a messenger of Hip hop, with hindsight I would say that may have been my first Q hip hop X file. I thank God I was able to follow thru. The day I was at my cousin trial, deep in my 'heart of hearts, ' I knew I had to remember the events that unfolded doing the trial. From this experience I was able to write, Free Mac our story, this book and Return of Mac & Q (WW3 Art of WAR) Mac prophesy-caught on Camera DVD & Audio book Mac 1999 live in Dallas, Concert of the future. On the day of Feb 5, 2017, when I woke up that morning I heard a voice say, I haven't forgotten my promise to you...Thanks to my cousin Troy, who seem to be a messenger in his owned right, told me about 'TV One, ' contest. After a day went by I Emailed, him with an excuse, that said the deadline is next week, Feb 16, 2017, and I didn't have much time. He called me to tell me that a Tornado had hit New Orleans Feb 7, 2016. He remembered that I wrote about a Tornado hitting New Orleans, and he reminded me about the dream I told him about a couple of days ago. That came true about the Tornadoes and the storm. Even though this story contains Myth Fiction and facts, it is still based on true events. Washington Post said the odds of a Tornado hitting New Orleans was 1000 to 1, and I predicted two.

Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been an increased urgency and appeal to examine the impacts of systemic racism in all parts of society, and the field of library and information science is no exception. To actively combat enabling and perpetuating structural racism and white supremacy, libraries across the globe are addressing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) by investing resources, creating initiatives, and engaging in reflection and deep questioning. Perspectives on Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Libraries examines how JEDI initiatives and actions have been incorporated into all aspects of librarianship and various types of libraries. The book serves as a collection of exemplary cases across all settings of librarianship to showcase how this work is being implemented and to provide commentary on implications and future opportunities for growth. Covering key topics such as community, ethics, and inclusive spaces, this premier reference source is ideal for administrators, policymakers, academicians, researchers, scholars, practitioners, librarians, instructors, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Principles and Policies uses environmental and social principles to analyse the latest wave of economic-based and market-orientated environmental policies currently being adopted around the world. This book provides an in-depth examination of six key principles that have been incorporated into international treaties and the national laws of many countries: * ecological sustainability * the polluter pays principle * the precautionary principle * equity * human rights * public participation These principles are then used to evaluate a range of policies including pollution charges, emissions, trading, water markets, biodiversity banks and tradable fishing rights. Environmental Principles and Policies is easily accessible, using non-technical language throughout, and - in what sets it apart from other books on environmental policy-making - it takes a critical and interdisciplinary approach. It does not set out policies in a descriptive or prescriptive way, but analyses and evaluates policy options from a variety of perspectives. This enables readers to gain a thorough grasp of important principles and current policies, as well as demonstrating how principles can be used to critically assess environmental policies.

The menace of antimicrobial resistance is present across health, animal, agriculture, food, and environment sectors. It, therefore, requires an inter-disciplinary combat approach- the one health approach, envisaged by the FAO-UNEP-WHO-WOAH Quadripartite (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). This comprehensive reference book provides a thorough understanding of antimicrobial resistance across different sectors. It presents deep insights and gives a global perspective on antimicrobial resistance for policymakers. The book offers essential and up-to-date information that enables researchers from multiple fields to design research on antimicrobial resistance. The book discusses molecular mechanisms and antibiotic resistance genes of significant antimicrobial-resistant pathogens, regulatory frameworks available worldwide, and mitigation strategies across the sectors, including probiotics, prebiotics, antimicrobial peptides, bacteriophages, phytochemical compounds, immunostimulants, vaccines, bacteriocins, etc. It compiles essays from leading experts in the field of antimicrobial resistance research. The book is meant for students and researchers in microbiology, medical microbiology, and public health. It is also helpful for clinicians and policymakers.

Far from Hollywood, regional productions such as Oscar Micheaux's provocative race films and Nell Shipman's wildlife adventures were censored by men like Major M.L.C. Funkhouser, the terror of Chicago's cinemas, and Myrtelle Snell, the Alabama administrator who made the slogan "Banned in Birmingham" famous. Censorship continues today, with Utah's case against Deadpool (2016) pending in federal court and Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills (2013) versus the Texas Film Commission. This authoritative state-by-state account covers the history of film censorship and the battle for free speech in America.

The first part of the collection focuses on three areas: the motivations of different types of Asian tourist; the characteristics and behaviour of particular Asian tourist segments; and, finally, an analysis of specific research issues. The second part of the book then goes on to explore the governance and organisation of tourism in the Asian region, and the nature of Asian growth and competitiveness as it relates to tourism. Book excerpt: Despite the end of the Cold War, America's national security apparatus for controlling information has remained in place. However, sex and secularism are emerging as the major targets of censorship. Federal decency standards have been imposed on art, the broadcast media, and the Internet. Virtually every major political issue of the 1990s (abortion, campaign finance, violence on TV, homosexuality, indecency on the Internet) has First Amendment implications, and all are included in this comprehensive encyclopedia. This work covers the full history of America's struggle for free expression, as well as the contemporary dynamics represented by pop figures like Frank Zappa, Howard Stern, and Danny Goldberg and politicians like Jesse Helms and Don Edwards. It goes beyond other academic works of its kind by recognizing the primacy of the mass media and the Internet in defining the modern contours of the First Amendment.

By the year 2000, trade summed to 26 percent of US GDP, and the United States imported almost two-thirds of its oil and was the world's largest host country for foreign investors. America's interest in a more open and prosperous foreign market is now squarely economic. These case studies in multilateral trade policymaking and dispute settlement explore the changing substance of trade agreements and also delve into the negotiation process—the who, how, and why of decision making. These books present a coherent description of the facts that will allow for discussion and independent conclusions about policies, politics, and processes. Volume 2 presents five cases on trade negotiations that have had important effects on trade policy rulemaking, as well as an analytic framework for evaluating these negotiations.
