Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Accounting and Taxes, grade: 63%, University of Sunderland, course: Management Accounting and Control, language: English, abstract: This report is divided into two parts. The first part will explain how a standard costing system works and how a variance analysis is used properly. Furthermore, the statement "Standard Costing and Variance Analysis are appropriate to any type and size of organisation" will be critically evaluated. The second part determines factors, which must be considered in the decision-making process. In addition, four scenarios of decisions will be provided and analysed. One of the main objectives of an organisation is to minimise the cost of production and to control the costs as they are limited resources within a business (Gupta, 2010). Management accounting literature provides several tools in order to achieve these objectives. In this context, the system for collecting and reporting revenue and cost information by areas of responsibility is called responsibility accounting (Siegel & Shim, 2006). It is based on the assumption that managers should be held responsible for their performance. A well-designed responsibility accounting system integrates responsibility centers within the organisation. In addition, responsibility centers are units within the organization, which have control over costs and revenues (Siegel & Shim, 2006). There are different types of responsibility centers such as profit centers, investment centers, revenue centers and cost centers. In the following report, the focus is on cost centers. Here, a variance analysis based on standard costing is a performance measure of a cost center (Siegel & Shim, 2006). In addition, a standard costing system is a useful tool facilitating decision-making.

Book excerpt: Financial Strategy for Public Managers is a new generation textbook for financial management in the public sector. It offers a thorough, applied, and concise introduction to the essential financial concepts and analytical tools that today's effective public servants need to know. It starts "at the beginning" and assumes no prior knowledge or experience in financial management. Throughout the text, Kioko and Marlowe emphasize how financial information can and should inform every aspect of public sector strategy, from routine procurement decisions to budget preparation to program design to major new policy initiatives. They draw upon dozens of real-world examples, cases, and applied problems to bring that relationship between information and strategy to life. Unlike other public financial management texts, the authors also integrate foundational principles across the government, non-profit, and "hybrid/for-benefit" sectors. Coverage includes basic principles of accounting and financial reporting, preparing and analyzing financial statements, cost analysis, and the process and politics of budget preparation. The text also includes several large case studies appropriate for class discussion and/or graded assignments.

Book excerpt: From banks to brokerage houses, profitability is the watchword for today's financial institutions. The search is unceasing for better ways to achieve it, maintain it, and defend it against competitive pressures. For some time, managers within financial institutions have been aware of a powerful new tool for cost analysis developed in the manufacturing sector: activity-based costing (ABC). A handful of financial services consultants around the world have been helping their financial services clients to migrate ABC from its birthplace in the manufacturing sector to the world of financial services, where it can be immensely effective as a basis for strategic decisions. It was time for a book that clarifies for general executives how ABC works and what contributions it can make to the formation of winning strategies. And it was time for a practical, comprehensive book that initiates management accountants in the financial services sector into this new approach to cost analysis. The Price Waterhouse Guide to Activity-Based Costing for Financial Institutions is that book. The ABC approach is particularly effective because financial services companies sell services as well as products. Profitability measurement cannot rely on older, more traditional methods of cost accounting, techniques that focus on the costs of raw materials and labor. The Price Waterhouse Guide to Activity-Based Costing for Financial Institutions shows how these firms can use the breakthrough concept of ABC in the same way that other companies manage all activities from the top down, more efficiently. This book explains the methods of this technique, with detailed guidelines that help firms plan for costs before theyoccur, rather than simply monitoring them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The financial services industry is undergoing a period of dramatic change. Deregulation has created an ultra-competitive marketplace and recent challenges like the worldwide subprime crisis, SEPA and Basel II have only intensified the need for financial services providers to shift their focus to customer centric Smart Profit GrowthTM strategies. Price Management in Financial Services shows how to utilize the modern techniques of value-based pricing to design professional pricing processes that go beyond the industry's current norm of purely risk and cost based pricing. The authors provide insight into strategic pricing concepts such as market segmentation, product bundling, multi-channel pricing and non-linear pricing and give an overview of advanced price optimization methods. The book serves as a step-by-step guide to long term profitable growth through professional pricing by familiarizing the reader with the concepts of price-response function management and price elasticity of demand. The book also includes a number of implementation strategies to incorporate Power Pricing into financial services institutions and includes a large number of Simon-Kucher & Partners' international case studies that illustrate the enormous profit potential that lies in professional pricing.
