Book Synopsis Global Secularisms in a Post-Secular Age by : Michael Rectenwald
Download or read book Global Secularisms in a Post-Secular Age written by Michael Rectenwald and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Secularisms addresses the state of and prospects for secularism globally. Drawing from multiple fields, it brings together theoretical discussion and empirical case studies that illustrate "on-the-ground," extant secularisms as they interact with various religious, political, social, and economic contexts. Its point of departure is the fact that secularism is plural and that various secularisms have developed in various contexts and from various traditions around the world. Secularism takes on different social meanings and political valences wherever it is expressed. The essays collected here provide numerous points of contact between empirical case studies and theoretical reflection. This multiplicity informs and challenges the conceptual theorization of secularism as a universal doctrine. Analyses of different regions enrich our understanding of the meanings of secularism, providing comparative range to our notions of secularity. Theoretical treatments help to inform our understanding of secularism in context, enabling readers to discern what is at stake in the various regional expressions of secularity globally. While the bulk of the essays are case-based research, the current thinking of leading theorists and scholars is also included.

Book Synopsis Leisure in Contemporary Society by : Kenneth Roberts
Download or read book Leisure in Contemporary Society written by Kenneth Roberts and published by CABI. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Western societies, leisure has been a major force in changing people's lives. The containment of working time and the rise in spending power have been long-term trends and are likely to continue over the next decades. While growth of leisure may not have eradicated differences by social class, gender or age, it has transformed how these differences are expressed, challenged or modified. In parallel, leisure studies has itself developed significantly as an academic discipline. This second edition is a complete rewrite of the first edition published in 1999. It is an introductory undergraduate text on leisure. It has a sociological perspective and discusses recent debates and research on topics such as post-modernity, consumer cultures and lifestyles.
Book Synopsis Working-Class Organisations and Popular Tourism, 1840-1970 by : Susan Barton
Download or read book Working-Class Organisations and Popular Tourism, 1840-1970 written by Susan Barton and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2005-05-20 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, many people take the idea of holidays for granted and regard the provision of paid time off as a right. This book argues that popular tourism has its roots in collective organisation and charts the development of the working class holiday over two centuries. This study recounts how short, unpaid and often unauthorised periods of leave from work became organised and legitimised through legislation, culminating with the Holidays with Pay Act of 1938. Moreover, this study finds that it was through collective activity by workers--through savings clubs, friendly societies and union activity--that the working class were originally able to take holidays, and it was as a result of collective bargaining and campaigning that paid holidays were eventually secured for all.
Book Synopsis The Wearing of the Green by : Mike Cronin
Download or read book The Wearing of the Green written by Mike Cronin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-11-23 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The full history of St. Patrick's day is captured here for the first time in The Wearing of the Green. Illustrated with photos, the book spans the medieval origins, steeped in folklore and myth, through its turbulent and troubled times when it acted as fuel for fierce political argument, and tells the fascinating story of how the celebration of 17th March was transformed from a stuffy dinner for Ireland's elite to one of the world's most public festivals. Looking at more general Irish traditions and Irish communities throughout the world, Mike Cronin and Daryl Adair follow the history of this widely celebrated event, examining how the day has been exploited both politically and commercially, and they explore the shared heritage of the Irish through the development of this unique patriotic holiday. Highly informative for students of history, cultural studies and sociology, and an absolute delight for anyone interested in the fascinating and unique culture of Ireland.
