Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operating within the framework of postcolonial studies and decolonial theory, this important work starts from the assumption that the violence exercised by European colonialism was not only physical and economic, but also ‘epistemic’. Santiago Castro-Gómez argues that toward the end of the eighteenth century, this epistemic violence of the Spanish Empire assumed a specific form: zero-point hubris. The ‘many forms of knowing’ were integrated into a chronological hierarchy in which scientific-enlightened knowledge appears at the highest point on the cognitive scale, while all other epistemes are seen as constituting its past. Enlightened criollo thinkers did not hesitate to situate the Black, Indigenous, and mestizo peoples of New Granada in the lowest position on this cognitive scale. Castro-Gómez argues that in the colonial periphery of the Spanish Americas, Enlightenment constituted not only the position of epistemic distance separating science from all other knowledges, but also the position of ethnic distance separating the criollos from the ‘castes’. Epistemic violence—and not only physical violence—is thereby found at the very origin of Colombian nationality.

Book excerpt: The essays brought together in this volume share a common objective: To bring a unifying methodological approach to the analysis of financial problems in developing, open economies. While the primary focus is on contemporary Latin America, the methods employed and the lessons learned are of wider applicability. The papers address the financial integration issue from three different perspectives. In some cases, a country study is the vehicle for an econometric investigation of a particular external linkage. In other cases, an individual country's experience suggests an economic model in which the stylized facts may be analyzed and developed. A third direction is unabashedly theoretical and formulates more general principles which are broadly applicable rather than country-specific.

Book excerpt: This book is especially timely as Latin America is diversifying its international connections, Spain and Portugal are seeking to expand their interests and presence in Latin America, and U.S. policy toward both regions has become increasingly complex. Contributors trace the history of Iberian-Latin American relations from colonial times and then examine the cultural, economic, political, and strategic ties that currently exist between the two regions. Particular attention is focused on the impact of Iberian-Latin American relations on U.S. foreign policy. The book concludes with a section of country-specific case studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how Latin America indicated an autonomous form of postcolonialism that was marked by the production of multiple conceptualisations of time. The analysis particularly focuses on iconic urban transformations in capital cities such as Buenos Aires, Mexico City, and Brasilia, diachronically, and investigates each case’s specific representations of past, present, and future. By exploring these three episodes, the book shows how Latin America’s postcolonialism involved specific spatial dynamics that were inherently working over global socio-political geographies resulting from the legacy of a “long” colonial imagination. The text is divided into two parts. The first part discusses some theoretical questions concerning the very conceptualization of Latin American space and the importance of exploring a genealogy of its urban geographies. The second part analyses the themes proposed through the discussion of the “materiality” of specific historical examples. The section delves into urban transformations in the aforementioned capital cities and focuses on how iconic material forms are able to encapsulate the main socio-political features defining each country’s post-colonial project. The book aims to depict a historical geography capable of describing how controversial relations between power and knowledge had materialised in the shapes of the urban environment and had iconically contributed to the multifaceted production of the global area known as Latin America. Without any pretension to offer an all-embracing perspective, the book discusses the Latin America experience within the broader question concerning the genealogy of global socio-political geographies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In exploring the financial history of a chronically indebted Latin American country, Domestic and Foreign Finance in Modern Peru seeks to elucidate the evolving links between private, public and foreign finance in order to assess their contribution to economic development. This novel historical approach allows the revision of commonly accepted views on the presumed insignificance of private financial systems and elite groups during the heyday of export-led growth. Alternatively, the book shows that major setbacks in financial decisions and strategies derived from expansionary public finance and its interaction with foreign financial flows. The book's demonstration rests on extensive evidence and research from private and public archives in Britain, France, Germany, Peru, Spain and the USA. Theoretically, this study contributes to a much-needed comprehensive model to explain financial problems in Latin American export economies.
