This book was released on 1994-03-25 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume of a two volume set that provides a modern account of basic Banach algebra theory including all known results on general Banach *-algebras. This account emphasizes the role of *-algebraic structure and explores the algebraic results that underlie the theory of Banach algebras and *-algebras. The first volume, which contains previously unpublished results, is an independent, self-contained reference on Banach algebra theory. Each topic is treated in the maximum interesting generality within the framework of some class of complex algebras rather than topological algebras. Proofs are presented in complete detail at a level accessible to graduate students. The book contains a wealth of historical comments, background material, examples, particularly in noncommutative harmonic analysis, and an extensive bibliography. Volume II is forthcoming.

Book excerpt: This is an all-encompassing and exhaustive exposition of the theory of infinite-dimensional Unitary Representations of Locally Compact Groups and its generalization to representations of Banach algebras. The presentation is detailed, accessible, and self-contained (except for some elementary knowledge in algebra, topology, and abstract measure theory). In the later chapters the reader is brought to the frontiers of present-day knowledge in the area of Mackey normal subgroup analysisand its generalization to the context of Banach *-Algebraic Bundles.

Book excerpt: This Research Note presents several contributions and mathematical studies in fluid mechanics, namely in non-Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids and on the Navier-Stokes equations in unbounded domains. It includes review of the mathematical analysis of incompressible and compressible flows and results in magnetohydrodynamic and electrohydrodynamic stability and thermoconvective flow of Boussinesq-Stefan type. These studies, along with brief communications on a variety of related topics comprise the proceedings of a summer course held in Lisbon, Portugal in 1991. Together they provide a set of comprehensive survey and advanced introduction to problems in fluid mechanics and partial differential equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of operators stands at the intersection of the frontiers of modern analysis and its classical counterparts; of algebra and quantum mechanics; of spectral theory and partial differential equations; of the modern global approach to topology and geometry; of representation theory and harmonic analysis; and of dynamical systems and mathematical physics. The present collection of papers represents contributions to a conference, and they have been carefully selected with a view to bridging different but related areas of mathematics which have only recently displayed an unexpected network of interconnections, as well as new and exciting cross-fertilizations. Our unify ing theme is the algebraic view and approach to the study of operators and their applications. The complementarity between the diversity of topics on the one hand and the unity of ideas on the other has been stressed. Some of the longer contributions represent material from lectures (in expanded form and with proofs for the most part). However, the shorter papers, as well as the longer ones, are an integral part of the picture; they have all been carefully refereed and revised with a view to a unity of purpose, timeliness, readability, and broad appeal. Book excerpt: This book presents the texts of seminars presented during the years 1995 and 1996 at the Université Paris VI and is the first attempt to present a survey on this subject. Starting from the classical conditions for existence and unicity of a solution in the most simple case-which requires more than basic stochartic calculus-several refinements on the hypotheses are introduced to obtain more general results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harmonic maps and the related theory of minimal surfaces are variational problems of long standing in differential geometry. Many important advances have been made in understanding harmonic maps of Riemann surfaces into symmetric spaces. In particular, ""twistor methods"" construct some, and in certain cases all, such mappings from holomorphic data. These notes develop techniques applicable to more general homogeneous manifolds, in particular a very general twistor result is proved. When applied to flag manifolds, this wider viewpoint allows many of the previously unrelated twistor results for symmetric spaces to be brought into a unified framework. These methods also enable a classification of harmonic maps into full flag manifolds to be established, and new examples are constructed. The techniques used are mostly a blend of the theory of compact Lie groups and complex differential geometry. This book should be of interest to mathematicians with experience in differential geometry and to theoretical physicists.
