Creep through grimy alleyways awash with drugs and thugs and corrupt cops, and hang out in seedy bars full of cheap booze, rowdy pimps and bloody fist fights. Sneak a peek into the private lives of shifty locals and wide-eyed Australian tourists, and enjoy a voyeur’s view of the deceit, drama and everything else the island is afraid to show us. In yet another steamy exposé of Bali and its sins and secrets, Bali Undercover suggests why the island may no longer be paradise, but a paradise lost.

Among Bali's drug dealers, this is the secret code for a huge cocaine shipment having just landed. For the men who run the country's drug empires, it's time to get rich and party hard. Snowing in Bali is the true crime story of the organised drug trafficking and dealing scene that's made Bali one of the world's most important destinations in the global distribution of narcotics. With its central location in the Asia Pacific market, its thriving tourist industry to act as cover for importation, and a culture of corruption that can easily help law enforcement turn a blind eye, Bali has long been a paradise for traffickers as well as for holiday-makers. Kathryn Bonella, bestselling true crime author of Hotel Kerobokan and Operation Playboy, has been given extraordinary access into the lives of some of the biggest players in Bali's mafia-like drug world, both past and present. In this international true crime biography, she charts their rise to incredible wealth and power and their drug-fuelled lifestyles, filled with orgies, outrageous extravagance and surfing. But running international criminal drug empires in Bali can also be a highly risky business, with terrible consequences for those caught and convicted. If you love true crime or organised crime thrillers, drug bust stories, espionage, murder and mayhem, mafia films, international mystery and crime, heists and biographies then this is the true crime biography for you... From the internationally bestselling author of Hotel Kerobokan and Operation Playboy and co-author of Schapelle Corby's autobiography, this is the incredible, true life inside account of Bali's hidden drug world. The more enterprising trishaw drivers offer sightseeing with sex, sometimes with unexpected results. Through candid interviews with sources in the sex industry, as well as Penang’s trishaw riders, the author discovers shocking scams, pitiful repentances and happy-ending massages that don’t end happy. Penang Undercover also looks beyond Penang to the neon lights of neighbouring Hatyai and Bangkok in Thailand to expose the shenanigans of mamasans, bargirls, dream-makers and liars. Finally, the author unearths a few hidden nuggets from his hometown of Kuala Lumpur and the subject of his fi rst two books in the Undercover series. Typical of his style, this book is written with wit and candour.

Arya has become associated with "Race Hierarchy" which considers whites, blondes, blue eyes more superior to other skin nations and It serves as a "Powerful" propaganda tool in the historical reality that has taken place, however ... it is not factual To this day ... the word Aryā is loaded with all kinds of connotations "Negative" and is largely due to the Nazi "ideology" which claims to be the Arya ... Nazi misguided and propaganda, has damaged the image of Aryān ... eliminating thousands of humans with just one word "racism" ... We have entered and fallen into the abyss of destruction due to the political policies of a nation ... to the point that the "assumption" of white supremacy is the "Superior Nation" Then wildly make the attitude of "contagious" other nations to "Label" the human hierarchy based on the color of the skin "White" or "Black" ... this results in dividing the human race Then who is that Aryan ...? The initial assumption of the published "Aryans" today were those who lived in Iran & Iraq in the prehistoric era, these people migrated to northern India around 1,500 BC, Indian "Dravidian" natives call these newcomers "ārya" At the end of the early 19th century the early 20th "Aryans" was equated with people German or Nordic and before the assumption "Aryan" refers to an ancient language whose speakers are thought to have spread and influenced language throughout the Indian subcontinent Also published the Sumerian civilization flourished in the Persian Gulf, around 4 - 3,000 BC and the civilization on the 'Plain of Shinar Land' was a territory that only existed after 2,000 BC which is now called "Babylon" Other sources also spread that, according to the "Volkisch" (people) belief, Aryans had created a high civilization that existed thousands of years ago were destroyed by natural disasters of melting ice at the end of the last ice age or the beginning of the ice age, 12,000 years ago and the basis of this "Mythology" is not strong enough Another assumption is that the original Aryan land was "Thule" at the warm north end of the earth, they lived in caves, this branch of the 'Ras Aryan' descendant was proto-Indo-European, published were 'Iranians' who spread, colonized various regions of the north of the earth after the Flood, spread agricultural civilization and was universally recognized by the symbol "Swastika" (卐) This symbol is what Nazi ideology used to claim itself as an Aryan nation ... Nation ... which to this day with its "Swastika" philosophy lives peacefully and reconciles the world, because here is stored perfectly the basic teachings of the original "Dharmic" .... which underlies the growth of the 3 great religions of India Ńâmô āryātārā ..... Book excerpt: Luke Williams flies to Kuala Lumpur coming down off crystal meth without plans or much cash. He is in Asia for three years. He spends time working as a prostitute in Pattaya, eats snake heart in Vietnam, consults an American medium in Ubud, and explores the eye-popping red light scenes in Jakarta and the Philippines. Along the way, he encounters other Westerners who go to Asia for the things they can't find at home - riches, wives, ladyboys, cheap living and even cheaper drugs, cults, spices, mountains, tropical beaches, beach gigolos, 'self-esteem' necklaces, and ascended masters. Luke fully immerses himself in every environment and encounter, going far beyond reportage, while aspects of his own history - his dreams, disappointments, urges, and his inherited struggle with mental illness - begin to catch up with him. He becomes addicted to Valium, is haunted by the past, and ends up in jail. Ultimately, Luke is confronted by what is and what was, and his own footprint upon it all.

Book excerpt: How do Balinese manage to present to the world the clear, bright face, the grace and poise, that they regard as crucial to self-respect and social esteem? How can the anthropologist pass behind the conventions of such a complex culture to recognize what is going on between people, in terms that convey their own experience? Wikan's study of the Indonesian island of Bali is an absorbing debate with previous anthropological interpretations as well as an innovative development of the anthropology of experience. "This is indeed an important book, a landmark in studies of Bali and one surely destined to have major theoretical impact on anthropological research well beyond that famous Indonesian island."—Anthony R. Walker, Journal of Asian and African Studies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1908, the ruler of the Balinese realm of Klungkung and more than 100 members of his family and court were massacred when they marched deliberately into the fire of the Dutch colonial army. The question of what their action meant and its continued significance in contemporary Klungkung forms the basis of Margaret Wiener's complex anthropolological history. Wiener challenges colonial and academic claims that Klungkung had no "real" power and argues that such claims enabled colonial domination. By focusing on Balinese discourses she makes clear the choices open to Balinese, both at the time of the Dutch conquest and in its narration. At the same time, she shows how these discourses, which revolve around magical weapons acquired from invisible agents such as gods, spirits, and ancestors, offer an alternative understanding of Klungkung's power. Moving between Balinese and Dutch narratives and between past and present, Wiener critiques colonial accounts by recounting Balinese memories and interpretations. Her attention to history and local situations illuminates the ways in which colonialism and orientalist scholarship have obscured the power of indigenous rulers and shows how Klungkung, once Bali's paramount realm, was relegated to a peripheral corner of the Indonesian nation-state. Both as a fascinating story and as a rich example of interdisciplinary scholarship, this book will interest students of colonialism, anthropology, history, religion, and Southeast Asia.

Book excerpt: This memoir of a family torn apart by an unthinkable betrayal lays bare an astonishing truth at the heart of an island the world cherishes as "The Last Paradise." When a young American traveler falls in love with and marries a beautiful Balinese girl, all the promise of "The Morning of the World" seems to await. But twenty years later and far too late, he discovers the awful purpose behind the elaborate Hindu ceremonies arranged by his wife at the birth of their children. While he struggles to make sense of the destruction of his family, Balinese friends warn of long-term plans, of black magic, of fraudulent documents, false Hindu ceremonies, collusion by members of the Bali community, the courts, the police, public prosecutors-even his own attorneys-in a combination known in Indonesia as a "Law Mafia." A few close Balinese friends stand with him, helping guide him through the sekala and niskala-the Balinese visible and invisible worlds-but stakes and tensions continue to rise until he faces a possibly fatal decision: dare he fight for his and his children's identities, or must he accept his friends' increasingly urgent advice to flee with his children ahead of plans for murder? The cases behind this book remain unresolved and at the center of ongoing struggles between forces of reform in Indonesia's capital of Jakarta, and the tightly-closed legal and social systems, both native and expatriate, of Bali. A website, uluwatu.com, forms an integral companion to the book. Whether read as a thriller or as a window into the fascinating and complex cultures of Indonesia, the tragedy and hope at the heart of this story propel a gripping read.
