Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Enchanted Islands, renowned art historian Mary D. Sheriff explores the legendary, fictional, and real islands that filled the French imagination during the ancien regime as they appeared in royal ballets and festivals, epic literature, paintings, engravings, book illustrations, and other objects. Some of the islands were mythical and found in the most popular literary texts of the day—islands featured prominently, for instance, in Ariosto’s Orlando furioso,Tasso’s Gerusalemme liberata, and Fénelon’s, Telemachus. Other islands—real ones, such as Tahiti and St. Domingue—the French learned about from the writings of travelers and colonists. All of them were imagined to be the home of enchantresses who used magic to conquer heroes by promising sensual and sexual pleasure. As Sheriff shows, the theme of the enchanted island was put to many uses. Kings deployed enchanted-island mythology to strengthen monarchical authority, as Louis XIV did in his famous Versailles festival Les Plaisirs de l’île enchantée. Writers such as Fénelon used it to tell morality tales that taught virtue, duty, and the need for male strength to triumph over female weakness and seduction. Yet at the same time, artists like Boucher painted enchanted islands to portray art’s purpose as the giving of pleasure. In all these ways and more, Sheriff demonstrates for the first time the centrality of enchanted islands to ancient regime culture in a book that will enchant all readers interested in the art, literature, and history of the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kadek is a powerful Silat-trained martial artist living in Bali during the colonial era. When the Dutch consolidate there hold, Kadek finds herself drawn into the resistance movement, fighting to protect her people from the horrors of occupation. Along the way, she forms a passionate connection with a Dutch soldier, a love that transcends time and continents. Decades later, Samantha, an American history graduate with a fascination for Southeast Asia, travels to Bali seeking answers about her family's past. As she uncovers the stories of Kadek and the resistance movement, Samantha discovers a history of courage, sacrifice, and unimaginable horror. Intertwining the stories of Kadek and Samantha, "Island of Resistance" is a thrilling tale of love, war, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. As I structured this book it became apparent that the Balinese, this wonderful Island, these passive people had endured untold horror disproportionate to their character. It is a story of two primary characters. Kadek a powerful Silat trained Martial art expert, a freedom fighter. It is a story of her relationship with a Dutch soldier whom the passion of love knows no bounds and spans time and continents and is initially set during the early 1900s Colonial era, and spans to current day. Love and tragedy. The Balinese people are known for their beauty, grace, and devotion to their culture and traditions. Yet, beneath the surface, there lies a history of hardship and suffering that has remained largely untold. It is a history that deserves to be heard, and in this book, we hear the story of two extraordinary individuals whose lives intersect during a time of great upheaval. Kadek, a skilled martial artist trained in the traditional art of Silat, is a woman whose strength and courage belie her small stature. Her story is one of resilience, as she survives the Japanese occupation of Bali during World War II. It is a story about her relationship, her love for a Dutch soldier Pieter, As we delve into Kadek's past and follow her journey, we witness the horrors of war, the brutality of colonialism, and the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Through her eyes, we see a Bali that is both beautiful and tragic, a place where love and loyalty are tested in the most trying of circumstances. This book is a testament to the power of storytelling, to the resilience of the human spirit, and to the enduring bonds of love that can overcome even the greatest of obstacles. It is a story that will stay with you long after you turn the last page, and one that will leave you with a deeper appreciation for the complexities of history and the strength of the human heart. It is a life intertwined with Samantha's life, Samantha who is from Boston Massachusetts born in 1999 over 100 years later, an American history graduate with a fascination for South East Asia. Looking to find answers she makes the trip to Bali. Answers she finds. But! Was she ready for them? Samantha's journey to Bali leads her down a path of discovery she never expected. As she immerses herself in the culture and history of the island, she learns of Kadek's story and the harrowing events that took place during the Japanese occupation. Samantha becomes drawn into Kadek's world, uncovering secrets and discovering the true nature of love, sacrifice, and the strength of the human spirit. As Samantha delves deeper into Kadek's past, she realizes that her journey to Bali was more than just a search for answers. It was a journey of self-discovery, one that would challenge her beliefs and open her heart to a new understanding of the world around her. Will Samantha have the courage to face the truth and find the closure she seeks? Or will the mysteries of the past be too much for her to bear?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The island of Bali's sensational image was created by the tourists, artists, and scholars who visited the tiny nation between the two world wars. A Dutch colony from 1908, Bali was a source of revenue for the Dutch government, which began to develop its image as the ultimate vacation spot. The tourism industry spread the idea of Bali as a paradise in which noble, happy, spiritual Balinese--all prodigiously creative artists--lived in innocence. Sensual images of beautiful people on an enchanted isle unspoiled by modernity predominated. Bali also acquired a reputation as a homosexual paradise. A host of books and articles fed these images of Bali until it evolved into one of the most romantic stops on the tourist itinerary. The Balinese people, however, made little profit from the tourist traffic. This history of the development of tourism in Bali stretches from the Dutch occupation in 1906 to the Japanese occupation in 1942. After exhaustive research in published records and in unpublished letters, diaries, and oral histories left by many of the American and European visitors to the island as well as the Balinese residents, the author explores the reasons for Bali's popularity among Westerners and their effects on the native culture.
