Bei diesem historischen Modell zur Leistungsmessung werden leistungstreibende und für den langfristigen Erfolg wichtige Faktoren nicht berücksichtigt. Seit dem Umschwung zum Informationszeitalter reichen jedoch rein finanziell ausgerichtete Erfolgsmessungen nicht mehr aus. Durch das entstehende Informationszeitalter kommt es zu immer größer werdendem globalen Wettbewerb, Produktinnovationen müssen immer schneller werden, Produktlebenszyklen verkürzen sich und es kommt zu einer steigenden Kundenorientierung und -segmentierung. Robert Kaplan begann sich Anfang der 80er Jahre mit neuen Leistungsmessungssystemen zu beschäftigen. 1987 zog er schon in dem zusammen mit Thomas Johnson veröffentlichten Buch „Relevance Lost“ maßgebliche Schlussfolgerungen für die BSC. Sie erkannten die Unabdingbarkeit der Verbesserung der vorhandenen Informationssysteme. Bis dahin verwendete Systeme basieren auf dem traditionellen Rechnungswesen und reagieren durch die Betrachtung der Vergangenheit zu spät und zu verzerrt, um eine realistische Zukunftsplanung zu ermöglichen. Zusammen mit David Norton führte Robert Kaplan 1990 eine ausführliche Studie mit zwölf Unternehmen durch, die den Titel „Performance Measurement in Unternehmen der Zukunft“ trug. Ziel der Studie war die Entwicklung eines neuen Leistungsmessungsmodells, welches zur besseren Abbildung des Leistungspotentials führen sollte. Sie konzentrierten sich auf die „Unternehmens-Punktetafel“ der Firma „Devices“, die Scorecard. Nach der Weiterentwicklung entstand ein ausbalanciertes System im Rahmen der mehrdimensionalen Scorecard mit vier Perspektiven,die BSC. Die strategische Verknüpfung, die im Zusammenhang mit dieser Studie schon vermutet wurde, ist im Laufe der Jahre in Zusammenarbeit mit verschiedensten Unternehmen immer wieder bestätigt worden. Durch ihre intensive jahrelange Forschungsarbeit und die Unterstützung der beteiligten Unter-nehmen gelang es Kaplan und Norton ein revolutionäres, integriertes, strategisches Managementsystem zu entwerfen, das in dieser Seminararbeit genauer beschrieben wird.

System Thinking and Modelling for a Complex World] we provide evidence of companies to overlook the possible benefits of combining and integrating several accounting practice into a single BSC-framework. We extend their thoughts by using a system dynamic modelling approach to the BSC. Bringing it all together will make 'an economics of scope effect' that could increase both the value of the company but also increase the validity of the decision process. We intend to show in a series of scenarios that both structural as well as direct action settings (initial value settings in the model) can have quit a significant impact on the solution paths.
