Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language complexity has recently attracted considerable attention from linguists of many different persuasions. This volume – a thematic selection of papers from the conference Approaches to Complexity in Language, held in Helsinki, August 2005 – is the first collection of articles devoted to the topic. The sixteen chapters of the volume approach the notion of language complexity from a variety of perspectives. The papers are divided into three thematic sections that reflect the central themes of the book: Typology and theory, Contact and change, Creoles and pidgins. The book is mainly intended for typologists, historical linguists, contact linguists and creolists, as well as all linguists interested in language complexity in general. As the first collective volume on a very topical theme, the book is expected to be of lasting interest to the linguistic community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Chikaranga Language: With Grammar, Exercises, Useful Conversational Sentences and Vocabulary (English-Chikaranga and Chikaranga-English) In the following pages an attempt has been made to provide for the European student a gradual introduction to the grammar of this important branch of the group of African Native languages, known as the Bantu family. As the sentence in the Bantu language is built upon the noun as foundation, the different noun-classes are treated first, and the student is advised to become thoroughly acquainted with the classes before proceeding further. From the Noun we pass on to the Grammatical Concord, which is an underlying principle of all Bantu languages. According to this principle all the words in the sentence that stand in connection with the noun are thrown into concord with it by the same, or a similar prefix or particle. From this point the student is gradually led on from simpler construction to the more difficult and complex forms. Book Synopsis Global Portuguese by : Luiz Paulo Moita-Lopes
Download or read book Global Portuguese written by Luiz Paulo Moita-Lopes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-17 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at deconstructing and problematizing linguistic ideologies related to Portuguese in late modernity and questioning the theoretical presuppositions which have led us to call Portuguese ‘a language.’ Such an endeavor is crucial when we know that Portuguese is a language which is increasingly internationalized, used as the official language in four continents (in ten countries) and which has come to play a relevant role in the so-called linguistic market on the basis of the geopolitical transformations in a multipolar world. The book covers a wide range of social, political and historical contexts in which ‘Portuguese’ is used (in Brazil, Canada, East-Timor, England, Portugal, Mozambique and Uruguay), and considers diverse linguistic practices. Through this critique, contributors chart new directions for research on language ideologies and language practices (including research related to Portuguese and to other ‘languages’) and consider ways of developing new conceptual compasses that are better attuned to the sociolinguistic realities of the late modern era, in which people, texts and languages are increasingly in movement through national borders and those of digital networks of communication.

Book Synopsis Language Planning in the Asia Pacific by : Robert B. Kaplan
Download or read book Language Planning in the Asia Pacific written by Robert B. Kaplan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers the language situation in Hong Kong, Timor-Leste and Sri Lanka explaining the linguistic diversity, the historical and political contexts and the current language situation, including language-in-education planning, the role of the media, the role of religion and the roles of non-indigenous languages. Two of the authors are indigenous to the situations described while the other has undertaken extensive field work and consulting there. The three monographs contained in this volume draw together the literature on each of the polities to present an overview of the research available about each of them, while providing new research-based information. The purpose of the volume is to provide an up-to-date overview of the language situation in each polity based on a series of key questions in the hope that this might facilitate the development of a richer theory to guide language policy and planning in other polities where similar issues may arise. This book was published as special issues of Current Issues in Language Planning.
Book Synopsis Ethnicity and Politics in Southeast Asia by : Amy H. Liu
Download or read book Ethnicity and Politics in Southeast Asia written by Amy H. Liu and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What explains the treatment of ethnic minorities in Southeast Asia? This Element conceptually disaggregates ethnicity into multiple constituent markers – specifically language, religion, and phenotype. By focusing on the interaction between these three ethnic markers, Liu and Ricks explore how overlap between these markers can affect whether a minority integrates within a broader ethnic identity; successfully extracts accommodation as unique group; or engages in a contentious and potentially violent relationship with the hegemon. The argument is tested through six case studies: (1) ethnic Lao in Thailand: integration; (2) ethnic Chinese in Thailand: integration; (3) ethnic Chinese in Malaysia: accommodation; (4) ethnic Malays in Singapore: accommodation; (5) ethnic Malays in Thailand: contention; and (6) ethnic Chinese in Indonesia: contention.
