Many farmers believe culling badgers must be part of the solution, but in 2013 a record 300,000 people signed a Downing Street petition asking the government to stop planned culls of badgers in Somerset and Gloucestershire, fuelling media controversy and signalling the beginning of a social conflict that was acted out in studios, streets, fields and village halls across England. The four-year trial culls, which began that year, aimed to establish that culling was a viable way of tackling the disease, but the widely divergent experiences and values of policy-makers, farming, conservation and animal welfare supporters means that decades of science on the disease in badgers and the effects of culling has not helped resolve the dispute. Reporting on original, UK research council-funded social science, this book takes on the challenge of understanding the contrasting views involved. Listening carefully to what the different protagonists have to say, the book unpicks the way science is interpreted to sustain differing conclusions, and considers how social science thinking could contribute. Book excerpt: This report is a follow up to the Fifth Report from the Agriculture Committee, session 1998-99 Badgers and Bovine Tuberculosis HC 233. This report highlights the key issues arising from a meeting with the Independent Scientific Group on Cattle TB (ISG) and Baroness Hayman of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF). Following the recommendation of the Krebs report, three different badger control methods are being compared, including pro-active culling, reactive culling following the discovery of bovine TB in herds, and surveys. Whilst the timetable for these trials has slipped, a delay described as regrettable in the report, the Committee reiterates its support for the trial as the only feasible way of obtaining the information essential to establishing the relationship between bovine TB in cattle and badgers and whether culling is a viable policy option, and reaffirms its belief that it is in the wider interests of the farming community, as well as in the long-term interests of conservation and animal welfare organisations, to co-operate fully with the trial. The report urges MAFF to consider the possible policy options once the results of the trial are known as a period of contemplation, following the delays in the trial, would be wholly unacceptable. It is possible that the trial period may have to extend beyond its current scope or end date in order to obtain clear results. It is emphasised that it is the responsibility of MAFF, not of the ISG, to make the ultimate decisions.

There are also many important diseases of domestic livestock which also occur in wildlife (e. g. foot and mouth disease and classical swine fever in wild boar, bovine tuberculosis in deer, badgers or possums), some of which can have a devastating impact on the farming industry, the wider rural economy and ultimately the public purse. But we should also not forget that wildlife diseases may have serious implications for the conservation of biodiversity. For some of the rarest, most endangered species (such as the Ethiopian wolf) d- ease may pose the greatest threat to their survival. If we are to avoid or reduce these impacts then we must improve our ability to detect and manage the risks associated with disease in wildlife populations. This is a challenge that will require expertise from many different disciplines: veterinary, ecological, medical, economic, poli- cal and zoological. In such an interdisciplinary field it is difficult to stay up to date with contemporary ideas and with techniques that may be rapidly evolving.
