Book excerpt: I jumped out of the car and pulled off my pager, threw it onto the ground, and stomped on it several times. I then pulled my 9MM Glock from my waistband and began to wave it around my head. I was ordered to drop the gun. Evidently I didn't point the gun at the officers because I was unable to unload it. I yelled, "SHOOT ME, KILL ME, LET ME DIE! I was then shot two times in the left leg. I dropped to one knee but would not go down. I once again stood up. Again the police shouted, "Drop the gun! Again I refused, waved the gun above my head, and screamed, "I want to die! Kill me!" I began waving the gun once again. It was at that point that both Baltimore County officers shot at me an additional eleven to thirteen times. In all, approximately fifteen rounds were fired at me. I hit the sidewalk. I remember voices, people tugging and pulling on me and most vividly I recall the overwhelming peace of mind that settled over me when my head hit the sidewalk. I can recall nuzzling the sidewalk as if hugging it and feeling as though the entire weight of the world and all my problems were lifting off of me. I didn't have to take care of anyone's problems anymore and I didn't have to care about my shortcomings and past actions. I was dying. It was a soft, serene, comfortable, warm, peaceful feeling. I can recall saying to myself as I lay there bleeding to death, you did good Danny, you did good. You're dying, now close your eyes and go to sleep, it's over. I couldn't move. I was in a state of serenity. That moment on the sidewalk at the corner of Eaton and Gough Sts. was the most comfortable, calm, relaxed, and fulfilling moment I had since I was a baby in my mother's arms. I was at peace with the world and myself; I felt no guilt, shame, embarrassment or regrets, for the first time since I was twenty years old. I was forty. I always felt as though death was a horrible experience. I had seen so much death I assumed it was horrible, painful, and unsettling. Not so. I was finally at ease.

Drafted into the newly formed Machine Gun Corps, he is sent to fight in places whose names will forever be associated with mud and blood and sacrifice: Ypres, the Somme and Passchendaele. He is one of the ‘lucky’ ones, winning the Military Medal for bravery and surviving more than two-and-a-half years of the terrible slaughter, which wiped out all but six of his original company. He wrote these memoirs fifty years later, but found his memories of life in the trenches had not diminished at all. The sights and sounds of battle, the excitement, the terror, the extraordinary comradeship, are all vividly described as if they had happened to him only yesterday.

Book excerpt: The Texas Hill Country is rich with history. In recent years revisionist historians have only written about a select few aspects of the region, apparently preferring to overlook the fact that outlaws, lawmen, Indians, horse soldiers and Spanish explorers crisscrossed the San Saba River and Menard County area for hundreds of years. True enough, the quaint shops and bistros, the music festivals, wildflowers, and the pleasing climate may be the attraction today but the area was home to Paleo-Indians 10,000 years ago. Spaniards trekked through the region in 1753, finding promise of gold and silver in the surrounding hills. Early Texas pioneers ultimately carved out a frontier settlement here, only to be menaced by hostile Comanche Indians, reluctant to release their hold on the region. Fort McKavett, the lonely outpost on the San Saba, played a vital part in the settlement of this area and in the rich military history of Texas. Join the author in rediscovering the fort, and Menard County.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He may be little known today, but Ben Daniels was a feared gunman who typified the journeyman gunfighter every bit as much as those whose names have become legend. Yet his story has eluded researchers and yarn-spinners alike—until now. Two prominent western historians have teamed up to tell the story of Ben Daniels’s rise from outlaw and convict to presidential protégé and high-ranking officer of the law. Tracing his life from jailhouse to White House, from Dodge City to San Juan Hill, Robert DeArment and Jack DeMattos present a full-length biography of Daniels, the most controversial of Teddy Roosevelt’s “White House Gunfighters.” The book faithfully traces Daniels’s early years, the time he spent in the Wyoming Territorial Penitentiary, his rebirth as a Dodge City lawman—including the controversy over his shooting a man in the back—and his part in the Battle of Cimarron. Following military service with the Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War, Daniels was appointed by President Roosevelt as U.S. marshal for turbulent Arizona Territory. Daniels was as quick with his mind as with a gun, but he had a rough ride to redemption. This original biography belongs on the shelf of every gunfighter buff and anyone interested in the broader story of the Old West. It rescues Daniels from the footnotes of history and shows us the amazing life of one of the West’s most intriguing gunmen.

Book excerpt: From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Sleepers and The Wolf, hailed as “simply the best” (Steve Berry) and “one of the most intriguing writers around” (Newsweek). . . . A top NYPD detective is pulled out of retirement to take down a notorious drug dealer. But will he risk the only family he’s ever had to crack the case? As one of the NYPD’s most trusted “tin badges”—retired detectives brought in to solve cases that are beyond the reach of the everyday force—Tank Rizzo has faced off against some of the city’s toughest criminals without breaking a sweat. To tackle a case involving a dangerous kingpin known as Gonzo, Tank turns to his best friend and ex-partner, Pearl; a former mobster living out a seemingly quiet retirement as the owner of Tank’s favorite Italian restaurant; and a team of expert misfits he would trust with his life. But Gonzo will stop at nothing to defend the empire he's built, and won't hesitate to make it personal. Then Tank gets a call telling him that his brother and sister-in-law, estranged from him for many years, have been killed in a horrific car accident. Tank is the only family left for his orphaned teenage nephew, Chris, although he knows his lifestyle is ill-suited to win him father of the year. Chris moves in with Tank, and the two circle each other warily. It’s only when Chris reveals an interest in true crime and a genius-level skill with computers that they begin to bond. Chris’s skills may be exactly what Tank’s team needs to take Gonzo down—but getting him involved could put his life at risk. Advance praise for Tin Badges “Carcaterra capably combines his trademark adrenaline-fueled action with the emotion involved in Tank taking on a parental role for a sometimes surly teen. All this needs, after a cliff-hanger close, is a sequel, and, fortunately, one is promised.” —Booklist “Another gem from a writer who has earned his spot at the top echelon of suspense masters . . . Everything here leaps from the page, never stinting on the harsh reality, delivering a spicy, smart, and entertaining adventure.”—Steve Berry, New York Times bestselling author of the Cotton Malone series

Book excerpt: Stephen Crane's "The Red Badge of Courage" is a timeless masterpiece that immerses readers in the harrowing experience of war. Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War, this novel follows the journey of Henry Fleming, a young soldier grappling with fear, courage, and the harsh realities of battle. As Henry leaves his farm and joins the Union Army, he is driven by a romanticized vision of war. However, when he faces the chaos and violence of the battlefield, his bravado fades, and he becomes consumed by self-doubt. Crane skillfully explores Henry's internal struggles, making this novel a profound examination of the human psyche under extreme pressure. The title, "The Red Badge of Courage," refers to the injuries soldiers wear as symbols of their bravery. Through Henry's eyes, we witness the transformation of a frightened youth into a battle-hardened soldier. The novel navigates themes of heroism, cowardice, and the unpredictable nature of conflict. Crane's vivid prose thrusts readers into the heart of the Civil War, evoking the sights, sounds, and emotions of combat. His portrayal of the psychological toll of war remains hauntingly relevant to this day, resonating with anyone interested in the human experience during times of crisis. "The Red Badge of Courage" is not just a war novel; it's a profound exploration of the human condition. It challenges our understanding of bravery and cowardice and offers a gripping narrative that continues to captivate readers, reminding us of the enduring impact of war on individuals and societies. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Stephen Crane, born on November 1, 1871, in Newark, New Jersey, was an American novelist and short story writer. He gained fame for his realistic depiction of war and his keen understanding of human nature. Crane's most renowned work, "The Red Badge of Courage," published in 1895, is a gripping novel that explores the psychological turmoil of a young soldier during the American Civil War. It's celebrated for its vivid portrayal of fear, bravery, and the harsh realities of battle. In addition to his Civil War novel, Crane wrote impactful short stories, including "The Open Boat" and "The Blue Hotel," known for their naturalistic style and exploration of human behavior under extreme conditions. Tragically, Crane's life was cut short when he passed away at the age of 28 in 1900, but his literary contributions continue to be recognized and admired for their insightful examination of the human experience, particularly in the face of adversity.
