Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Anne Bishop presents the stunning conclusion to the Tir Alainn trilogy, where the world will be tested in an epic war... It began as a witch hunt. But the Master Inquisitor’s plans to eliminate all traces of female power in the world have expanded to crushing the Sylvalan Barons who oppose him—and to destroying the wellspring of magic in the Mother’s Hills. Faced with this evil, humans, witches, and the Fae become uneasy allies. But even together, they aren’t strong enough to stand against the armies the Inquisitors are gathering. So they look for help from their last possible ally. The House of Gaian. The reclusive witches who rule the Mother’s Hills. The witches powerful enough to create a world—or destroy one... Their long-held creed of “do no harm” is about to give way to more important one: Survive.

Download or read book An Artist Against the Third Reich written by Peter Paret and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-03-24 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conflict between National Socialism and Ernst Barlach, one of the important sculptors of the twentieth century, is an unusual episode in the history of Hitler's efforts to rid Germany of 'international modernism'. Barlach did not passively accept the destruction of his sculptures. He protested the injustice, and continued his work. The author's discussion of Barlach's art and struggle over creative freedom, are joined to an analysis of Barlach's opponents. Peter Paret's fine study of an artist in a time of crisis seamlessly combines the history of modern Germany and the history of modern art.

This is no fairytale. “Danger and excitement abound in this enticing first book in an exciting new paranormal series.” Publisher’s Weekly Reviewer. “One cannot help but root for Winnie, both in her quest, and in love. Winnie must not only fend off the manifestations of her worst nightmares but she must also be wary of the ultimate deceiver, Finesse’s lover, Seth.” Publisher’s Weekly Reviewer.

You’ve finished your first draft—congratulations! Think it’s ready for publication? Think again. The next stage is all about revising and reworking your manuscript—fine-tuning the plot, adding or improving subplots, and fleshing out characters; in short, addressing important structural issues that make or break a novel. Robert J. Ray, who helped thousands of writers get from blank page to first draft in The Weekend Novelist, now guides the same audience through a series of seventeen weekend revision exercises designed to fit into any busy lifestyle, focusing on everything from rewriting scenes to developing sound flashbacks to refining characters’ back stories. Throughout the book, Ray illustrates his lessons with examples from such great works of literature as Jane Eyre, Gorky Park, and The Great Gatsby so that writers may more easily identify how and why a certain technique or structural element helps or hinders their own work. Also included are checklists, timed exercises, plot diagrams, and charts—all aimed to get you rewriting and revising your draft with confidence. Whether you’re an amateur novelist, a seasoned writer who’s hit a mental block, or a creative writing teacher looking for proven exercises for better instruction, The Weekend Novelist Rewrites the Novel provides the tools to transform first drafts into successful novels.

Book Synopsis Folktales Retold by : Amie A. Doughty
Download or read book Folktales Retold written by Amie A. Doughty and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-03-31 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Folktales and fairy tales are living stories; as part of the oral tradition, they change and evolve as they are retold from generation to generation. In the last thirty years, however, revision has become an art form of its own, with tales intentionally revised to achieve humorous effect, send political messages, add different cultural or regional elements, try out new narrative voices, and more. These revisions take all forms, from short stories to novel-length narratives to poems, plays, musicals, films and advertisements. The resulting tales paint the tales from myriad perspectives, using the broad palette of human creativity. This study examines folktale revisions from many angles, drawing on examples primarily from revisions of Western European traditional tales, such as those of the Grimm Brothers and Charles Perrault. Also discussed are new folktales that combine traditional storylines with commentary on modern life. The conclusion considers how revisionists poke fun at and struggle to understand stories that sometimes made little sense to start with.
