Book excerpt: Reproducing over 200 works on paper from the past 50 years, this retrospective publication presents a crucial part of British sculptor Phyllida Barlow's (born 1944) oeuvre. Designed by Japanese graphic designer Takaaki Matsumoto, the book will be published alongside the Hauser & Wirth London exhibition opening in late May 2014. A never-before-published interview between the artist and Hans Ulrich Obrist provides insight into drawings that are not preparations but, rather, daily exercises done before, during and after the creation of her sculptures. While the works on paper range in style, they demonstrate a consistency in color and form in their exploration of ideas related to structures, architectural interiors and urban surroundings. Barlow's works on paper date back to the early 1960s when she was a student at Chelsea College of Art in London.

Book excerpt: Guston disagreed, famously saying: 'I got sick and tired of all that purity--I wanted to tell stories!' And what stories he told, with his Klansmen, ominous but somehow familiar, perhaps even ourselves under those hoods, as suggested in 'Untitled' (1971), which features a fleshy head enclosed by two hooded figures. This was not the path of refinement a leading abstract expressionist painter should be taking, yet Guston pushed forward: challenging tradition and expectations, guided solely by his own intuition and determination. Guston and his wife left for Italy immediately after the 1970 Marlborough opening, taking up residency at the American Academy in Rome over the next seven months. He spent the first two months brooding, despairing at the reviews and the rigidity of the art world, and revisiting the great art of the past that had first moved him to paint as a young man. .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Extraordinary. An intellectual feast as well as a visual one' Edmund de Waal, author of The Hare with Amber Eyes The world comes to us in colour. But colour lives as much in our imaginations as it does in our surroundings, as this scintillating book reveals. Each chapter immerses the reader in a single colour, drawing together stories from the histories of art and humanity to illuminate the meanings it has been given over the eras and around the globe. Showing how artists, scientists, writers, philosophers, explorers and inventors have both shaped and been shaped by these wonderfully myriad meanings, James Fox reveals how, through colour, we can better understand their cultures, as well as our own. Each colour offers a fresh perspective on a different epoch, and together they form a vivid, exhilarating history of the world. 'We have projected our hopes, anxieties and obsessions onto colour for thousands of years,' Fox writes. 'The history of colour, therefore, is also a history of humanity.'

Book excerpt: Rhythm & Colour' examines, for the first time, the life, work and loves of the avant-garde dancers, Hélène Vanel (1898-1989), Loïs Hutton (1893-1972), and Margaret Morris (1891-1980), through newly discovered letters, photographs, journals, memoirs, and contemporary criticism. This beautiful and extensive book considers the place of dance in post-WWI Modernism from Morris' involvement with Futurism and Vorticism to Vanel's dances at the opening of the 1938 International Surrealist Exhibition in Paris which are now heralded as the beginning of Performance Art. Hutton's affair with American poet Edna St Vincent Millay, Morris' relationship with J.D. Fergusson, and the pursuit of Vanel by Scottish Colourist painter, Leslie Hunter raise issues of gender and sexuality. Their theatres in Chelsea, Paris and the French Riviera attracted, among many others Scott Fitzgerald, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso and James Joyce (whose daughter Lucia was among their pupils). The dancers worked with Jean Renoir, Marcel Duchamp and Salvador Dalí.

Book excerpt: The British sculptor Phyllida Barlow CBE RA (b. 1944) studied at Chelsea College of Art (1960-63) and the Slade School of Art (1963-66), where she later taught for much of her career. Since retiring from teaching in 2009, she has been elected a Royal Academician, created new work for Tate Britain and the Royal Academy, had numerous solo shows and represented Britain at the Venice Biennale. Barlow's large-scale sculptures eschew serenity, balance, and beauty in favour of instability, obstruction, and oddness. This study of Phyllida Barlow situates her as an important figure within British contemporary art.

Book excerpt: Based on the holdings of the Goetz Collection in Munich, and accompanying a 2013 exhibition there, this volume offers a concise Roni Horn overview. It includes Horn's best-known series, such as You Are the Weather, To Place, a.k.a., Some Thames and Cloud and Clown. Throughout these sequences, Horn's abiding motifs recur: water, weather, her adoptive home of Iceland, and more formal qualities such as repetition and permutation. The book shows how Horn's major works can be experienced in ever-new constellations, arrangements and contrasts within the exhibition context. Also included here is a collection of key writings by Horn--"Making Being Here Enough," "I Can't See the Arctic Circle from Here," "My Oz," "Island Frieze," "When Dickinson Shut Her Eyes" and "Simple and Complete"--plus an interview with the artist conducted by James Lingwood.
