Download or read book Adherence of Plaque Bacteria and Mutans Streptococci to Orthodontic Elastomeric Ligatures written by Andrew R. Fenton and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background and significance. A new covalently bonded polymer coated elastomeric ligature claims to significantly reduce sliding friction and bacterial adhesion. Purpose. To determine the relative amounts of bacterial plaque and mutans streptococci as measured by colony forming units adhering to elastomeric ligatures that are either polymer coated or uncoated. Methods. Ten male and ten female adolescent patients wore a combination of polymer coated and regular ligatures. Results. Polymer coated elastomerics had a higher total CFU for bacterial plaque. Mutans streptococci counts revealed that there wasn't a statistical difference between elastomerics for all areas except the lower premolars. Conclusions. More bacterial plaque was formed on polymer coated elastomerics. Polymer coated and uncoated elastomerics had a similar attraction for mutans streptococci. The polymer coated elastomerics had a higher affinity for non-mutans types of plaque microorganisms. Oral hygiene needs to be emphasized regardless of the type of elastomeric used.
