Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "America, home of the brave and the free" This is a well-deserved description of America, but it hardly describes the complexity of our great nation. Describing America would be like describing a large, moving picture that is constantly changing. Each of its many components is different than all the others. To understand America one would have to understand every individual, in every culture, in every community. To leave out any piece of the big picture would distort America's image and deny the opportunity to know America itself. This book gives the reader a piece of the big picture that represents a bygone era. As a nation, we have made a lot of progress over the years and we can be proud of our accomplishments, but we should remember, our roots are the foundation of our success. Go back in time with the author to relive the old stories just as they happened in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s in rural Arkansas. Experience the humor, nostalgia, and the tragedy of a bygone era. Each reader will experience something different, but will come away enlightened having enjoyed these glimpses of a simpler time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In language as perceptive as it is poignant, poet Gwen Nell Westerman builds a world in words that reflects the past, present, and future of the Dakota people. An intricate balance between the singularity of personal experience and the unity of collective longing, Follow the Blackbirds speaks to the affection and appreciation a contemporary poet feels for her family, community, and environment. With touches of humor and the occasional sharp cultural criticism, the voice that emerges from these poems is that of a Dakota woman rooted in her world and her words. In this moving collection, Westerman reflects on history and family from a unique perspective, one that connects the painful past and the hard-fought future of her Dakota homeland. Grounded in vivid story and memory, Westerman draws on both English and the Dakota language to celebrate the long journey along sunflower-lined highways of the tallgrass prairies of the Great Plains that returns her to a place filled with “more than history.” An intense homage to the power of place, this book tells a masterful story of cultural survival and the power of language.

Book excerpt: Continuous prosperity can be within our grasp provided we institute the simple economic reform fully documented in these pages. This is what this book promises Most readers will get a tax break Absolutely no taxes on produced things All land-sites would be used productively No diminution at all in government revenues It sounds almost too good to be true, but these four benefits have already occurred whenever it has been tried in actual practice. This is important - a proposal must be not only simple and logical, but tested. Prospective readers should know that there is a veritable mountain of empirical evidence proving each of these four points see chapter three. Much more hard empirical evidence is available, but uppermost in the author's mind was the readability of this book. Heavy subject, light treatment. You be the judge. If this simple proposal is not enacted, then America and the other democracies in the world will slowly tax themselves into "benevolent" dictatorship (no doubt still called democracy) and socialism (probably called compassion). It's happening already. Free enterprise can't work without it and will soon disappear. You should know that literally hundreds of well-known historical figures and urban experts have endorsed this proposal see chapter five. You could know what they know? To find out what this proposal is, you will have to read the book. Suffice it to say here that there is a good tax that actually promotes the economy, even if the revenue it produces is thrown away! If this book's proposal can accomplish the above four benefits, this book then is truly epochal. The proposal becomes the most important idea since the beginning of human history. Simplicity and readability these have been the watchwords of the author while writing this book. He has not found it necessary to obfuscate. It has been his primary intention to make this book not only vitally important but a joy to read no jargon allowed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book From a very early age, Thomas E. Barnett and his sister were taught the value of hard work, family, and caring for your neighbors. Living as a young person in the ’60s and ’70s in the Midwest wasn’t easy, but it was always filled with love, laughter, and a sense of community. In his memoir, Barnett shares the peaceful moments of growing up, from Christmas mornings to picking strawberries in the summers, and the realization he has now as an adult of just how hard his parents worked to provide a joyful life for himself and his sister. By recording his own upbringing, we are given a glimpse into the past, and a time capsule for future generations to connect with those who came before. About the Author Thomas E. Barnett was born and raised on a farm in Livingston County, Kentucky, with a vision of rolling hills and valleys, a place called Bizzell Bluff. He lived three miles from the nearest town, called Burna, a small agricultural community where everyone looked out for one another. He attended Livingston County High School from 1973 to 1977.

Book excerpt: This book explores the various ways in which individuals use music and culture to understand and respond to changes in their natural and built environments. Drawing on over 15 years of ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and participant observation, the author develops the thesis that the relationships, networks, and intimate forms of social interaction in the “portable” community cultivated at bluegrass festival events are significant cultural formations that shape participants’ relationships to their localities. With specific attention to the ways in which the strength of these relationships are translated into meaningful sites of community identity, place, and action following devastating local floods that destroyed homes and businesses, displacing residents for years, The Portable Community: Place and Displacement in Bluegrass Festival Life sheds light on the strength of such communities when tested and under external threat. A study of the central role of arts and music in grappling with social and environmental change, including their role in facilitating disaster relief and recovery, this volume will appeal to scholars of sociology with interests in symbolic interactionism, the sociology of music, culture, and the sociology of disaster.
