Why they’re important, how they relate to the Twelve Steps, and why they work. Anyone who has recovered from addiction to drugs or alcohol knows that getting sober is only the beginning. Working the Steps, patching life back together, and living sober are where the real work lies. While the Twelve Steps provide a program of lifelong recovery, recovery experts Sterling Shumway and Thomas Kimball have identified six essential values, or principles, that reinforce the Steps and that are key to achieving lasting recovery:Hope: A reawakening after despair; to live with greater confidenceHealthy Coping Skills: Managing the pain and stress of lifeSense of Achievement and Accomplishment: Moving beyond the limits of addiction toward personal goalsCapacity for Meaningful Relationships: The positive support and connection with family and peersUnique Identity Development: The emergence of a unique positive identityReclamation of Agency: The internal knowledge that you have choices in your behaviorUsing their research, personal stories, and guided journals and exercises, Shumway and Kimball thoroughly unlock these complex principles for recovering addicts and their families, and provide practical steps for applying them to a long-term recovery program.

Book excerpt: Bestselling author and renowned Buddhist teacher Noah Levine adapts the Buddha's Four Noble Truths and Eight Fold Path into a proven and systematic approach to recovery from alcohol and drug addiction—an indispensable alternative to the 12-step program. While many desperately need the help of the 12-step recovery program, the traditional AA model's focus on an external higher power can alienate people who don't connect with its religious tenets. Refuge Recovery is a systematic method based on Buddhist principles, which integrates scientific, non-theistic, and psychological insight. Viewing addiction as cravings in the mind and body, Levine shows how a path of meditative awareness can alleviate those desires and ease suffering. Refuge Recovery includes daily meditation practices, written investigations that explore the causes and conditions of our addictions, and advice and inspiration for finding or creating a community to help you heal and awaken. Practical yet compassionate, Levine's successful Refuge Recovery system is designed for anyone interested in a non-theistic approach to recovery and requires no previous experience or knowledge of Buddhism or meditation.

Book excerpt: Well Diggers and Life-Changers Published anonymously in 1933 by "A Layman with a Notebook," this book is an important source document for the writing of the "Big Book" of Alcoholics Anonymous. It was originally titled What is the Oxford Group? Of the twelve chapters, the middle eight describe the recovery program as practiced by Bill W., Dr. Bob, and the "first one hundred" before the "Big Book" was written. These chapters explain the Four Steps of recovery, which are Surrender, Sharing, Restitution, and Guidance, along with the Four Standards of Honesty, Purity, Unselfishness, and Love. The Four Steps are: Surrender: (AA's Steps One, Two and Three) Surrender of our life, past, present, and future, into God's keeping and direction. Sharing: (AA's Steps Four, Five, Six and Seven) The Sharing of our (difficulties) with another life given to God, and to use Sharing as Witness to help others, still unchanged, to recognize and acknowledge their (difficulties). Restitution (or Amends): (AA's Steps Eight and Nine) Restitution to all whom we have wronged directly or indirectly. Guidance: (AA's Steps Ten, Eleven and Twelve) Listening to, accepting, relying on God's Guidance and carrying it out in everything we do or say, great or small. (What Is the Oxford Group?, pages 8-9, edited for clarity by Wally P.) The Four Standards were used to separate assets from liabilities as part of the inventory process (Step Four) and to separate God's will from self-will during the "quiet time" and listening process (Step Eleven). The Four Standards are characterized by a question to help separate the "good and bad": HonestyIs it true or false? PurityIs it right or wrong? UnselfishnessIs it about others or is it about ourselves? LoveIs it about faith or fear? The "Big Book" authors reversed the Four Standards in Steps Four, Ten and Eleven. They described self-will in terms of Resentment, Fear, Selfishness, and Dishonesty. What Is the Oxford Group? was written by an Englishman from a Christian perspective during a period of time when the Oxford Group in the United States was evolving from a religious movement into a spiritual movement. Please keep that in mind as you read this treasure-trove of spiritual principles that were later incorporated into AA's textbook for recovery. Wally P. is an A.A. archivist, historian, and the author of Back to Basics, How to Listen to God, and Back to the Basics of Recovery.

Book excerpt: The words of this book’s title are said aloud every day by thousands of people meeting together to help each other recover from addiction.s the addictions may be to alcohol or cocaine, gambling or food, violence or sex, but the path to recovery is the same. The exciting thing about the Twelve Steps is that they teach us how to live. Once we know the design of living and the principles of living a successful life, we find that we not only get over the problems we see, but we avoid many other problems we would have had. To me, the miracle is that all this was boiled down into twelve simple Steps that anybody can apply. This is a book of plain-spoken wisdom for people with addictions and people who love them. Joe McQ has been a student of the Twelve Steps for more than three decades. He, like tens of thousands of others, lives them every day, one day at a time. In The Steps We Took, Joe takes us through them, one Step at a time, and helps us understand how they work-and how they can change our lives.
