Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling series that kicked off the monster girl phenomena in North America! What do world governments do when they learn that fantastical beings are not merely fiction, but flesh and blood--not to mention feather, hoof, and fang? Why, they create new regulations, of course! "The Interspecies Cultural Exchange Accord" ensures that these once-mythical creatures assimilate into human society...or else! When hapless human twenty-something Kurusu Kimihito becomes an involuntary "volunteer" in the government homestay program for monster girls, his world is turned upside down. A reptilian lamia named Miia is sent to live with him, and it is Kimihito's job to tend to her every need and make sure she integrates into his everyday life. While cold-blooded Miia is so sexy she makes Kimihito's blood boil with desire, the penalties for interspecies breeding are dire. Even worse, when a buxom centaur named Centorea and a scantily clad harpy named Papi move into Kimihito's house, what's a full-blooded young man with raging hormones to do?!

Book excerpt: The designers at Nikon in 2004-05 were looking for a way to reach the semi-pro photographer. The semi-pro is someone who has another job but shoots photos Ñ often at weddings Ñ as a part-time job. TheyÕre sometimes called weekend warriors. They tend to be serious and dedicated, but they had no need for the pro digital single-lens reflex behemoths like the Canon EOS IDX Mark II or the Nikon D5. What they needed then and now is a DSLR camera that is built strong, is always reliable and can handle their workload. That led to the first true semi-pro camera from the company, the Nikon D200. The D200 may have been overshadowed by its successor, the Nikon D300, but itÕs still a great camera. A great camera that can be had relatively cheaply, and that makes it an even better camera.

Book excerpt: This volume of Advances in Clinical Child Psychology is the third under our editorship and the seventeenth of the series. It continues the tradition of examining a broad range of topics and issues related to the study and treatment of child and adolescent behavior problems. Over the years, the series has served to identify important and exciting new developments in the field and provide scholarly review of current thought and practices. In the openingchapter, Cichetti, Toth, and Lynch examine attachment theory and its implications for psychopathology. They provide exacting commentary on the status of the construct of attachment and its potential role in the development of diverse psychopathologies. Similarly, Richards explores the impact of infant cognitive psychophysiology and its role in normal and abnormal development in the second chapter. Both of these chapters address issues of risk for subsequent psychopathology and are deeply embedded in developmental theory. In Chapter 3/ Nottelmann and Jensen tackle the important issue of comorbidity in psychiatric diagnosis from a developmental perspective.

With the knowledge of some 20 years of research after Chomsky's initial critique of the behavioristic approach to language learning, it is time to explore imitation once again. How imitation is viewed in this book has changed greatly since the 1950s and can only be under stood by reading the various contributions. This reading reveals many faces, many forms, many causes, and many functions of imitation-cognitive, social, information processing, learning, and biological. Some views are far removed from the notion that an imitation must occur immediately or that it must be a per fect copy of an adult sentence. But the essence of the concept of imitation is retained: Some of the child's language behavior originates as an imitation of a prior model. The range of phenomena covered is broad and stimulating. Imitation's role is discussed from infancy on through all stages of language learning. Individual differences among children are examined in how much they use imitation, and in what forms and to what purposes they use it. The forms and functions of parent imitation of their child are considered. Second-language learning is studied alongside first-language learning. The juxtaposition of so many views and facets of imitation in this book will help us to study the commonalities as well as differences of various forms and functions of imitative language and will help us to discern the further dimensions along which we must begin to differentiate imitation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book provides a detailed account of the history of maternity and child welfare in Dublin between 1922 and 1960. In so doing it places maternity and child welfare in the context of twentieth-century Irish history, offering one of the only accounts of how women and children were viewed, treated and used by key lobby groups in Irish society and by the Irish state. Mother and child is of critical importance to understanding the political and social history of modern Ireland as it examines the responses of the State, the church, voluntary groups and women to the emergence of the welfare State in Ireland. As such it makes a welcome contribution to Irish political, social, medical and gender history.
