Such a work must obviously contain as many novel features as possible, so that a short explanation of what my collaborators and I had in mind when planning the book is perhaps not superfluous. Book excerpt: AHMED SHAWQI: LIFE & POEMS Translation & Introduction by Paul Smith Ahmed Shawqi (1869 - 1932) was the great Arabic Poet-Laureate: an Egyptian and at times a Sufi poet and dramatist who pioneered the modern Egyptian literary movement, most notably introducing the genre of poetic epics to the Arabic literary tradition. Shawqi was sent to continue his studies in Paris where he was influenced by the Molière and Racine.
