Book excerpt: These twenty captivating stories about the founder of the Hasidic faith Israel ben Eliezer called the Baal-Shem or Master of God's Name, provide a profound and charming account of the genesis of Hasidism, still Judaism's most important religious movement. As a delicate and moving portrayal not only of the power of the Baal-Shem's mystical faith, but also of Eastern European Jewish daily life, The Legend of the Baal-Shem is an ideal introduction to Hasidic religious thought, and to Martin Buber's own influential philosophy of love and mutual human understanding.

Book excerpt: The most famous master of Kaballah and Jewish mysticism is Rabbi Yisrael ben Eliezer. Rabbi Yisrael lived from 1698 to 1760, and is known as the Baal Shem Tov. More stories are told about the Baal Shem Tov than about any other person in Jewish history. These stories have been passed down, primarily through an oral tradition, for over 250 years. More recently, books - and even more recently the internet - have been added as a means to continue the time-honored tradition of transmitting Baal Shem Tov stories from parent to child and from chassid to chassid. The Baal Shem Tov stories are indeed glimpses of the life and culture of downtrodden, 18th century, Eastern European Jewry. However, to see the stories as only that is to miss their central role. In chassidic life, Baal Shem Tov stories have formed the foundation of one of the most fundamental and important of chassidic spiritual practices: telling stories about the Tzaddikim - the Jewish saints, as it were; literally, the "righteous ones"-the great Spiritual Masters. These Tzaddikim led and guided the various chassidic dynasties through the dark exile of European Jewry, from the time of the Baal Shem Tov. All chassidim, irrespective of their particular allegiance - whether to Chabad, Bretslov, Aleksander, Belz, Satmar, Gerrer, Vishnitz, to name a few - share one common belief: that the basic facts of the Baal Shem Tov stories are just that - facts. There is an old chassidic saying: "If you believe all of the Baal Shem Tov stories you're a fool; if you don't believe any of them you are a bigger fool." Today, the stories and teachings of the Baal Shem Tov are as relevant as they were in the past. They inspire and guide us. They nudge us towards intensifying our service to G-d. The stories teach through example how to live our life with a joyful attitude. They enable us to experience the flow of love that emanates from G-d.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachings of R. Yisrael Baal Shem Tov (1698-1760) on the Torah and the Jewish festivals, selected from Keter Shem Tov, a work compiled by a prolific Torah giant named R. Aharon of Apta, first published in 1794. An addendum-teachings of the Baal Shem Tov transmitted by the Chabad Rebbes-was added to the 1973 Kehot edition. This was broadened with additional material and rearranged in 1998 and 2004 respectively. The lessons in this book were chosen with the intent that a novice to Chasidic in-depth analysis will also be able to follow the message, take it to heart, and live with it. Originally appearing in the popular Chayenu weekly study pamphlet, they are presented here as an organized self-standing work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reimagining the Bible collects a dozen essays by Howard Schwartz. Together the essays present a coherent theory of the way in which each successive phase of Jewish literature has drawn upon and reimagined the previous ones. The book is organized into four sections: The Ancient Models; The Folk Tradition; Mythic Echoes; Modern Jewish Literature and the Ancient Models. Within these divisions, each of the essays focuses on a specific genre, ranging from Torah and Aggadah to Kabbalah, fairy tales, and the modern Yiddish stories of S.Y. Agnon and Isaac Bashevis Singer. Arguing the important thesis that there is a continuity in Jewish literature which extends from the Biblical era to our own times, over a period of more than 3,000 years, this collection also serves as a guide to the history of that literature, and to the genres it comprises.

Book excerpt: This book was written after many years of research and comparison between the Torah, Kabbalah, and science books. I started on this subject following a personal crisis. I had the opportunity of seeing people and phenomena beyond those experienced in the daily life. "Go out of Egypt," I was told. The meaning of it was to step out of the material routine, and start dealing with spirituality. I tried to examine all new information and study on the topic of the creation of the world, and the connection between the Torah and science. I searched for proofs to this connection in the most thorough way possible. Was the world created by accident, or with an initial thought? What was the world created for? Is the Big Bang the beginning of creation, or was the world created much earlier? What is the universe made of? What maintains it? What will happen to the universe in the future? When was man created? Was man created from the monkey? Is there any kind of connection between all of humanity? How can you even research creation? Can you possibly prove the existence of God? How can you even reach Him? Who can provide answers to that? The answers to these questions are "hidden" in the Torah. The Torah is a secret language. The Hebrew word for "world", Olam, hints on the words: Hidden — Ha'alem, Ne'lam. Scientists study the world every day, and the results of their studies are surprisingly similar to the prophecies of the Torah. Jewish thinkers, world intellectuals, and tzadikim, are able to find a connection with the hidden worlds. They told us that there is a Creator to the world — God. The world was created with initial thought: The thought of creation. Man has a special and unique role in the world; to connect with the Creator by thinking of, and helping his fellow men, "Love your neighbor as yourself". The nation of Israel is a "bridge" that connects the material world with the Creator. Will we successfully climb the right bridge? Will man connect the world and humanity? Will the nation of Israel successfully carry out its task? "Love your neighbor as yourself"... this is how the soul is built. Let's connect to it... Good luck.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elie Wiesel identified himself as a Vizhnitzer Hasid, who was above all things a witness to the testimony and teaching of the Jewish tradition at the core of the Hasidic tradition. While he is well known for his testimony on the Holocaust and as a messenger to humanity, he is less well known for his engagement with the teachings of Jewish tradition and the Hasidic heritage that informs that engagement. Portraits illuminates Wiesel's Jewish teachings and the Hasidic legacy that he embraced by examining how he brought to life the sages of the Jewish tradition. David Patterson reveals that Wiesel's Hasidic engagement with the holy texts of the Jewish tradition does not fall into the usual categories of exegesis or hermeneutics and of commentary or textual analysis. Rather, he engages not the text but the person, the teacher, and the soul. This book is a summons to remember the testimony reduced to ashes and the voices that cry out from those ashes. Just as the teaching is embodied in the teachers, so is the tradition embodied in their portraits.
