Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Past exploration in low- and moderate-temperature systems of the Great Basin shows that the relatively small area associated with fluid upflow and elevated temperatures is often difficult to detect by drilling widely spaced temperature-gradient holes or by other methods. By studying the Newcastle geothermal system, we hoped to develop a basic understanding of the concealed hydrothemlal system as a tool for assessing other geothermal areas of the Great Basin. The emphasis of our work centered on determining (1) the distribution of subsurface heat and the movement of thermal fluid, (2) the location and geometry of bedrock structures that might control fluid movements, (3) the chemical character of the geothermal water, and (4) the geometry of the bedrock beneath the Escalante Desert. Field studies included: (1) drilling and monitoring temperatures in shallow themlal-gradient boreholes, (2) mapping geologic units and performing structural studies in the adjacent mountains, (3) conducting detailed gravity surveys, (4) conducting electrical resistivity and self-potential (SP) surveys, (5) collecting water samples for detennining major ions and light stable isotope analyses, and (6) mapping Quaternary units.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents current applications of remote sensing techniques for clouds and precipitation for the benefit of students, educators, and scientists. It covers ground-based systems such as weather radars and spaceborne instruments on satellites. Measurements and modeling of precipitation are at the core of weather forecasting, and long-term observations of the cloud system are vital to improving atmospheric models and climate projections. The first section of the book focuses on the use of ground-based weather radars to observe and measure precipitation and to detect and forecast storms, thunderstorms, and tornadoes. It also discusses the observation of clouds using ground-based millimeter radar. The second part of the book concentrates on spaceborne remote sensing of clouds and precipitation. It includes cases from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, using satellite radars to observe precipitation systems. Then, the focus is on global cloud observations from the ClaudSat, Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO), including a perspective on the Earth Clouds, Aerosols, and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) satellite. It also addresses global atmospheric water vapor profiling for clear and cloudy conditions using microwave observations. The final part of this volume provides a perspective into advances in cloud modeling using remote sensing observations.

Book excerpt: The mountains and fjords of Greenland preserve a record of nearly four billion years of Earth history -- a story of mountain building, volcanic eruptions, primitive life and ice ages. During this vast period of time, through processes of continental drift, Greenland has journeyed from the southern hemisphere through the tropics to its present polar position. This volume presents an account of the geological evolution of Greenland, together with its mineral wealth and hydrocarbon potential. It is written in a form that is aimed at the general reader with an interest in the dramatic history of our planet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the present text is to distil the experience of a number of workers active in the field of biochemical education, so providing readable accounts which, it is hoped, will be of significant benefit to those who are new to the teaching profession in addition to those who may be stimulated to experiment with alternative strategies in their own teaching situation. From the various contributions considered in this book, each topic, in its widest sense, would warrant at least a volume on its own and indeed such texts are currently available. However, it was felt more appropriate to restrict the coverage to those aspects which are of particular use to the subject of biochemistry and, for which, work in this area has already achieved some measure of success. In effect what each of us is doing is supplying findings from a body of knowledge collectively called educational technology. Without entering the debate on the semantics of what educational technology is or is not, it doesn't take long to realise that, like the vast majority of subject areas, it has its own unique terminologies and vocabulary. Whilst it is inevitable that such terms will appear throughout the text, hopefully all will be explained on first use and so it is not envisaged that this will be too distractive to the reader.
