Book excerpt: Starting in September 1999, a series of workshops was carried out to study the prospects for B physics at the Tevatron. There were four working groups covering CP Violation, Rare and Semileptonic Decays, Mixing and Lifetimes, as well as Production, Fragmentation and Spectroscopy. Upon the completion of a comprehensive written report summarizing the results of this workshop, we will review the highlights of B Physics at the Tevatron in Run II and beyond. On our way to this goal, we will pass by questions such as 'Why are there so many B factories these days?' or 'Why do we also want to do B Physics at Fermilab'.

This report represents the status of the field around the summer of 2001. Both the state of the theory and the experimental possibilites continue to advance. The results presented here are not a final view of what the experiments can achieve. This report concentrates on aspects of B physics accessible mainly to dadron colliders, and it is hoped that it will prove a ready and complete reference and aid new collaboration members and maybe others interested in the fiels as well.

Book excerpt: Run II at the Tevatron started on March 1, 2001 with a design instantaneous luminosity of 2 x 10[sup 32] cm[sup -2] s[sup -1]. The upgraded D0 detector is expected to collect 2 fb[sup -1] of data at[radical]s= 2.0 TeV in approximately 2 years. The D0 collaboration is planning to make measurements in a number of important areas of B physics, including sin(2[beta]), B[sub s] mixing, the[Lambda][sub b] lifetime and rare B decays. In this note we describe the upgraded D0 detector and highlights of the B physics program in D0.

Book excerpt: CP violation is one of the most subtle effects in the Standard Model of particle physics and may be the first clue to the physics that lies beyond. Charge conjugation, C, and parity, P, are symmetries of particle interactions. C corresponds to the operation of replacing a particle by its antiparticle, while P is the operation of mirror reflection. Before 1956, it was believed that these were also symmetries of the interactions of elementary particles. In 1956, C S Wu found evidence for P violation in the weak interaction. Theorists proposed that the combination of CP would be a symmetry of the weak interaction. In 1964, Christenson, Cronin, Fitch and Turlay found the first evidence for the violation of CP symmetry in the decays of kaons.Although Kobayashi and Maskawa then showed how the Standard Model can accommodate the observed CP violation, Wolfenstein pointed out that it is also possible that there is a new interaction in addition to the usual four, called the superweak interaction, which is responsible for the asymmetry. To test this idea, the observation of a different type of asymmetry, called direct CP violation, is required; in the kaon sector, very precise measurements of the ratio of kaon decay rates are necessary. In B decay modes where a second order weak process whimisically named “penguin” interferes with another suppressed, first order “tree” amplitude, it may also be possible to observe these direct CP-violating effects.B physics and CP violation is now one of the major growth areas in high energy physics. Nearly every major high energy physics laboratory now has a project underway to observe the large CP asymmetries expected in the B sector and to test the consistency of the Standard Model. The unitarity of the Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix in the Standard Model implies the existence of three phases, called alpha, beta and gamma, which can be determined by the measurements of CP asymmetries in B decays. About 200 participants gathered in Hawaii in March 1997 to discuss the progress in the field, and this important book constitutes the proceedings of that conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains many excellent articles presenting the most recent progress in high energy physics and the current interesting problems concerning flavor physics. The reader will see how flavor physics has become a central area of particle physics, with the Standard Model (SM) being subjected to increasingly precise experiments, and why the remaining puzzles in the SM, such as the mechanisms of symmetry breaking and CP violation, as well as fermion mass and mixing generation, all are mysteries hidden in the physics of flavor. The book also shows that flavor physics is likely to be a window for probing new physics beyond the SM for many years to come.

Book excerpt: Written by authors working at the forefront of research, this accessible treatment presents the current status of the field of collider-based particle physics at the highest energies available, as well as recent results and experimental techniques. It is clearly divided into three sections; The first covers the physics -- discussing the various aspects of the Standard Model as well as its extensions, explaining important experimental results and highlighting the expectations from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The second is dedicated to the involved technologies and detector concepts, and the third covers the important - but often neglected - topics of the organisation and financing of high-energy physics research. A useful resource for students and researchers from high-energy physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this monograph discusses the usefulness of heavy flavor as a probe of TeV-scale physics, exploring a number of recently-uncovered “flavor anomalies” that are suggestive of possible TeV-scale phenomena. The large human endeavor at the Large Hadron Collider has not turned up any New Physics, except the last particle of the Standard Model, the Higgs boson. Revised and updated throughout, this book puts the first results from the LHC into perspective and provides an outlook for a new era of flavor physics. The author readdresses many questions raised in the first edition and poses new ones. As before, the experimental perspective is taken, with a focus on processes, rather than theories or models, as a basis for exploration, and two-thirds of the book is concerned with b -^ s or bs sb transitions. In the face of the advent of Belle II and other flavor experiments, this book becomes a part of a dialogue between the energy/collider and intensity/flavor frontiers that will continue over the coming decade. Researchers with an interest in modern particle physics will find this book particularly valuable.

Book excerpt: Between 1992 and 1996, the CDF and D0 experiments have collected data samples of 110 pb−1 each of p{bar p} collisions at (square root)s = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. In the year 2001 the Tevatron commenced p{bar p} collisions again at (square root)s = 1.96 TeV with the goal of delivering an integrated luminosity of 1 fb−1 per year. In the mean time the CDF and D0 detectors have undergone substantial upgrades which allow for a rich B physics program with unique capabilities. In this paper we discuss recent results and the B Physics prospects at the Tevatron with 2 fb−1 of data (Run IIa) or 15 fb−1 of data (Run IIa+Run IIb).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1947, the first of what have come to be known as "strange particles" were detected. As the number and variety of these particles proliferated, physicists began to try to make sense of them. Some seemed to have masses about 900 times that of the electron, and existed in both charged and neutral varieties. These particles are now called kaons (or K mesons), and they have become the subject of some of the most exciting research in particle physics. Kaon Physics at the Turn of the Millennium presents cutting-edge papers by leading theorists and experimentalists that synthesize the current state of the field and suggest promising new directions for the future study of kaons. Topics covered include the history of kaon physics, direct CP violation in kaon decays, time reversal violation, CPT studies, theoretical aspects of kaon physics, rare kaon decays, hyperon physics, charm: CP violation and mixing, the physics of B mesons, and future opportunities for kaon physics in the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: The Tevatron Run 2 has begun. The Tevatron program in the next six years offers a real opportunity to significantly advance our understanding of the fundamental properties of the universe. It is an exciting, challenging program that goes straight to the highest priorities of high energy physics worldwide. The accelerator and detectors are being commissioned and seem to be performing well. We anticipate first physics results in the summer of 2002.
