Book excerpt: The present book covers topics both on fluvial and lagoon morphodynamics. The first part is dedicated to tidal environments. Topics include an overview of main morphological features and mechanisms of estuaries and tidal channels and a model devoted to investigate flow field pattern and bed topography in tidal meandering channels and a comparison with recent observational evidence of meanders within different tidal environments. The general failure of Bagnold hypothesis when applied to equilibrium bedload transport at even relatively modest transverse slope is demonstrated. A new model is then proposed based on an empirical entrainment formulation of bed grains.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sound waves propagate through various media, and allow communication or entertainment for us, humans. Music we hear or create can be perceived in such aspects as rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, or mood. All these elements of music can be of interest for users of music information retrieval systems. Since vast music repositories are available for everyone in everyday use (both in private collections, and in the Internet), it is desirable and becomes necessary to browse music collections by contents. Therefore, music information retrieval can be potentially of interest for every user of computers and the Internet. There is a lot of research performed in music information retrieval domain, and the outcomes, as well as trends in this research, are certainly worth popularizing. This idea motivated us to prepare the book on Advances in Music Information Retrieval. It is divided into four sections: MIR Methods and Platforms, Harmony, Music Similarity, and Content Based Identification and Retrieval. Glossary of basic terms is given at the end of the book, to familiarize readers with vocabulary referring to music information retrieval.

Book excerpt: At DART'09, held in conjunction with the 2009 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conference on Web Intelligence (WI 2009) and Intelligent Agent Technology (IAT 2009) in Milan (Italy), practitioners and researchers working on pervasive and intelligent access to web services and distributed information retrieval met to compare their work ad insights in such fascinating topics. Extended and revised versions of their papers, together with selected and invited original contributions, are collected in this book. Topics covered are those that emerged at DART'09 as the most intriguing and challenging: (i) community oriented tools and techniques as infrastructure of the Web 2.0; (ii) agent technology applied to virtual world scenarios; (iii) context aware information retrieval; (iv) content based information retrieval; and (v) industrial applications of information retrieval. Every chapter, before discussing in depth the specific topic, presents a comprehensive review of related work and state of the art, in the hope of this volume to be of use in the years to come, to both researchers and students.

Book excerpt: With the widespread interest in digital entertainment and the advances in the technologies of computer graphics, multimedia and virtual reality technologies, the new area of “Edutainment” has been accepted as a union of education and computer entertainment. Edutainment is recognized as an effective way of learning through a medium, such as a computer, software, games or AR/VR applications, that both educates and entertains. The Edutainment conference series was established and followed as a special event for the new interests in e-learning and digital entertainment. The main purpose of Edutainment conferences is the discussion, presentation, and information exchange of scientific and technological developments in the new community. The Edutainment conference series is a very interesting opportunity for researchers, engineers, and graduate students who wish to communicate at these international annual events. The conference series includes plenary invited talks, workshops, tutorials, paper presen- tion tracks, and panel discussions. The Edutainment conference series was initiated in Hangzhou, China in 2006. Following the success of the first (Edutainment 2006 in Hangzhou, China), the second (Edutainment 2007 in Hong Kong, China), and the third events (Edutainment 2008 in Nanjing, China), Edutainment 2009 was held August 9–11, 2009 in Banff, Canada. This year, we received 116 submissions from 25 different countries and regions - cluding Austria, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Trinidad and Tobago, UK, and USA.

Book excerpt: The aim of the book is to provide latest research findings, innovative research results, methods and development techniques from both theoretical and practical perspectives related to the emerging areas of Web Computing, Intelligent Systems and Internet Computing. As the Web has become a major source of information, techniques and methodologies that extract quality information are of paramount importance for many Web and Internet applications. Data mining and knowledge discovery play key roles in many of today’s prominent Web applications such as e-commerce and computer security. Moreover, the outcome of Web services delivers a new platform for enabling service-oriented systems. The emergence of large scale distributed computing paradigms, such as Cloud Computing and Mobile Computing Systems, has opened many opportunities for collaboration services, which are at the core of any Information System. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an area of computer science that build intelligent systems and algorithms that work and react like humans. The AI techniques and computational intelligence are powerful tools for learning, adaptation, reasoning and planning. They have the potential to become enabling technologies for the future intelligent networks. Recent research in the field of intelligent systems, robotics, neuroscience, artificial intelligence and cognitive sciences are very important for the future development and innovation of Web and Internet applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains scientific papers and case studies presented at Interactive Sto- telling ’08: The First Joint International Conference on Interactive Digital Storytelling (ICIDS), held November 26–29, 2008, in Erfurt, Germany. Interactive Digital Storytelling (IDS) is a cross-disciplinary topic, which explores new uses of interactive technologies for creating and experiencing narratives. IDS is also a huge step forward in games and learning. This can be seen through its ability to enrich virtual characters with intelligent behavior, to allow collaboration of humans and machines in the creative process, and to combine narrative knowledge and user activity in interactive artifacts. IDS involves concepts from many aspects of Computer Science, above all from Artificial Intelligence, with topics such as narrative intelligence, automatic dialogue and drama management, and smart graphics. In order to process stories in real time, traditional storytelling needs to be formalized into computable models by drawing from narratological studies. As it is currently hardly accessible for creators and e- users, there is a need for new authoring concepts and tools supporting the creation of such dynamic stories, allowing for rich and meaningful interaction with the content.
