Book Synopsis Final Report on Road Test One-MD by : National Research Council (U.S.). Highway Research Board
Download or read book Final Report on Road Test One-MD written by National Research Council (U.S.). Highway Research Board and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were conducted on a 1.1-mi. section of portland- cement-concrete pavement near La Plata, Maryland, to determine the relative effects of four different axle loads on a concrete pavement. The loads employed were 18,000 lb. and 22,400 lb. on single axles, and 32,000 lb. and 44,800 lb. on tandem axles. There were four separate test sections with trucks selected for each section to obtain the highest practicable rate of acceleration between 10 and 40 mph. on the existing road profile. Controlled-traffic tests were conducted from June through December 1950, soil and strain tests made in 1951. The analyses of these data, which included 6,000 soil tests and 12,000 strain and deflection readings, were completed in April 1952.

Book excerpt: In the fall of 1985, a field study to determine the effects of heavy truck axle load dynamics on the magnitude of pavement surface deflections was conducted at an instrumented pavement test site in the province of quebec. the test program involved placing perturbations on the road surface to vertically excite axles of an instrumented vehicle and recording axle forces and pavement surface deflections as the vehicle passed over deflection transducers. primary observations include the following: for high frequency (single perturbation) loading condition, 1) the magnitude of pavement surface deflections increased with increased vehicle velocity, 2) maximum dynamic axle loads ranged from approximately 130 to 200 percent of the static loads, 3) pavement deflection response was dependent on both the low frequency whole body and high frequency axle response, and 4) relative to normal test conditions, pavement deflections tended to increase linearly with increasing dynamic axle load; for whole body (multiple perturbations) loading condition, 1) maximum deflections caused by the oscillating tandem axles were about twice the magnitude of deflections produced by the same axle group under normal conditions, and 2) using the recorded deflections, estimated load equivalency factors for the bouncing tandem axles were 6.5 to 12.5 times the magnitude of the predicted equivalency factor for the same tandem axle on a relatively smooth pavement surface.

Book Synopsis Analysis and Determination of Axle Load Spectra and Traffic Input for the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide by : Yi Jiang
Download or read book Analysis and Determination of Axle Load Spectra and Traffic Input for the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide written by Yi Jiang and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-01 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The values of equivalent single axle loads (ESAL) have been used to represent the vehicle loads in pavement design. To improve the pavement design procedures, a new method, called the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG), has been developed to use the axle load spectra to represent the vehicle loads in pavement design. These spectra represent the percentage of the total axle applications within each load interval for single, tandem, tridem, and quad axles. Using axle load spectra as the traffic input, the MEPDG method is able to analyze the impacts of varying traffic loads on pavement and provide an optimal pavement structure design. In addition, the new method can be used to analyze the effects of materials and the impacts of seasons, to compare rehabilitation strategies, and to perform forensic analyses of pavement conditions. The MEPDG utilizes mechanistic-empirical approaches to realistically characterize inservice pavements and allows the full integration of vehicular traffic loadings, climatic features, soil characteristics, and paving materials properties into the detailed analysis of pavement structural behaviors and the resulting pavement performance. In order to provide the traffic data input required by the MEPDG, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) made an effort to obtain truck traffic information from the traffic data collected through weigh-in-motion (WIM) stations. This study was conducted to create the truck traffic spectra and other traffic inputs for INDOT to implement the new pavement design method. Furthermore, the INDOT AADT data were used in this study to analyze the spatial distributions of the traffic volumes in Indiana and to obtain the spatial distributions of traffic volumes.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To help assess proposals for further changes in federal truck weight limits, Congress requested this study through Section 158 of the Surface Transportation and Uniform Relocation Assistance Act of 1987. To conduct the study, the National Research Council convened a special Transportation Research Board committee with experts in pavements, bridges, highway safety, freight transportation economics, motor vehicle design, highway administration, motor carrier operations, and enforcement of motor vehicle regulations. The study focused on four issues identified in the study request that involve potential changes to federal weight limits for Interstate highways: (1) Elimination of existing grandfather provisions; (2) Alternative methods for determining gross vehicle weight and axle loadings; (3) Adequacy of the current federal bridge formula; and (4) Treatment of specialized hauling vehicles--garbage trucks, dump trucks, and other trucks with short wheel bases that have difficulty complying with the current federal bridge formula. For each of these issues, the study committee estimated the nationwide effects of changes in federal limits proposed by the trucking industry, highway agencies, and other groups. Projections of heavy-truck miles by type of truck, region of the country, highway functional class, and operating weight were developed for a base case and alternative truck weight regulatory scenarios. These projections were then used to estimate impacts on truck costs, pavements, bridges, and safety.
